As some of you know, I've been toying with an RP idea for quite some time. Of course, I did get the idea that I should see if people would be interested in the future in terms of participation before I put any much more work into this. So right now I'll give you an overview of what my plans and ideas are: From Ashes is a mish-mash of multiple genres, placed in a post-apocalyptic environment. The RP takes place on the ruins of an island nation. Roughly a thousand years ago, the nation existed as a small but very prosperous country with a very gifted population in the ways of science and technology. It wasn't until one day, archaeologists stumbled upon ancient ruins buried beneath their island's mountains. In those ruins, they discovered a special crystal that resonates with an ancient power. Using this crystal, that nation made incredible strides with technology and even medical science. Many years after this discovery, it was soon uncovered that this nation had been experimenting with accelerated human evolution and an entirely new race of super-humans called "Titans", each with an affinity to an unknown force called "Arcana". It wasn't long after that other nations heard of this, but before a full scare war was launched everything was soon destroyed in a single, cataclysmic event. Over a thousand years, society rebuilt itself on this island nation under three flags: The Meijishu Sovereignty, The Outcasts, and the New Calion Republic. The Republic was a group of survivors from the Cataclysm that strived to rebuild society as it once was; collecting for themselves the largest amount of recovered technology out of any tribe or group. The Republic strives for equality among people, but harbor grudges and stigmas against the other races in the region for past crimes or apparent treatments. The Outcasts are nomadic groups of Hybrids; beings that were failed attempts at evolving humans. From social stigmas and fear, these people have been cast out and forced to wander the more barren areas of the remaining lands. The Sovereignty stands as one of the oldest nations in the New World, a monarchy lead by one man; a Titan with the vision of rebuilding the world from its ruins, where the technology and sins of the Old World are left in the dust and where man is reborn in a new, superior vision. The Sovereignty sees the technology of the Old World as the reason the world is what it is now, and that in order to avoid any future disaster they must rebuild in a new direction. After a thousands years, the islands that these three factions live on has almost entirely recovered from the disaster of old. Society as a whole has flocked to the crystals made and utilized in the old technology; the Affinity Crystals. Smaller crystals are used more as a currency, refurred to as "Shards", while larger ones are used by Titans for their Arcana or other purposes. The world itself is scattered with dangerous, new creatures; and the land scattered with ancient bunkers and installations put in place by the government of old. These bunkers stand as both full of treasures and dangers, but who knows what secrets they may hold as well... Players in this RP have a choice between three races: Titans, Hybrids, and Humans. For this RP, I wanted to distinguish these three races as much as possible, and have laid out the strengths and weaknesses of each, as well as backgrounds for each: Titans - These people are the best result of experiments to further human evolution. Titans are tall, physically superior, and possess a powerful presence to them. In terms of the RP, Titans are physically superior to the other races in several ways and possess the ability to manipulate Arcane Forces (magic). However, Titans themselves seem to have trouble healing and recovering the current world, almost as if there's something missing from their forced evolution... Hybrids - Hybrids are the early and failed experiments of improving human biology. Hybrids are physically distinct in many unique ways; some call them repulsive, others find beauty in their appearance. In the RP, Hybrids possess well-round statistics, as well as the ability to utilize both augmentations and Arcana; however, their weakness falls in a lessened ability to utilize both as well as the other races. Humans - Humans are who we expect them to be. However, over the years humans have delved into the technology of the Old World and found ways to improve on their physical bodies, both to survive and compete with the other races. In the RP, Humans are physically weaker than the other races, but have full access to Augmentations as well as an improved ability to recover and heal. However, thanks to Augmentations, human may have the ability to physically compete with the others after all... Now to explain Arcana and Augmentations: Arcane Forces are magical abilities. These involve manipulating the nature around one's own self, or even performing unnatural things. Arcana function similar to magic has in every RP; you have a limited use of either offensive spells, or temporary defensive ones (there are no passive always-on Arcana). Compared to Augmentations, Arcana are more forward and active in assisting a character's combat and can often be the center of the action. Augmentations are passive, semi-permanent "upgrades" to a character. Augs can involve improved stats, or added abilities and more temporary skills (such as a cloaking ability, or a shield generator). Compared to Arcana, Augmentations are passive compliments to a character to improve on or expand their fighting ability and are styled more behind-the-scenes. Augmentations do not include added weapons beyond something more single-use (no sword-arms or shoulder-mounted cannons). Weapons in the RP will range from simple swords, shields and melee weapons; to high tech weapons or magically enhanced weapons (Arcana Weaponry). The race in which you pick, as well as the stats you pick will determine what weapons you will have access to, but I will make an effort to lay these out as clearly as possible when you are making your character so as there are no screw-ups. I will also lay out some goals and intentions for this RP: - There will be no stats or battle-mechanics in this RP beyond what you write. I'm choosing to do this simply because I feel that battles will have a greater focus on narrative and character importance and less on grinding and leveling. However, this does mean that I trust ALL OF YOU to know what a good battle would look like, and that does mean: A - no godmodding, B - being willing to take a hit. As well, anything PvP I want you guys to talk over outside the RP; determine who wins and how the battle goes, and what it will mean for you characters. This is so battles won't be measuring-contests and hold importance to the narrative. - Races will be distinct in their play-style and abilities, as well as their maximum stats. However, I will ensure that these are balanced for the RP. - I want the plot to be as interactive with the players as possible without taking away from the overall experience, and I want to make it apparent that death an failure will be very possible; but it will not mean the end of the RP. I want to give players the chance of having characters that hold importance in the setting, and let them help determine where the plot goes. I have a planned-out plot for the RP, but I want it to be open for how the characters choose to handle things, or if they happen to fail. As I said, failure does not mean the end of the RP; the story continues but in a different direction. - I want to place an emphasis on character interaction and story; which means that competition and perhaps even PvP will be kept a minimum. That does not mean I want it cut out, but it means I want players to focus on interaction, growth, and story more than meta-phallic measuring contests. A lot of this is still a work in progress, and the RP itself won't happen for quite some time if people are interested. However, if people are interested that is great news! Also, I am looking to see if anyone would be interested in co-admining this; having the extra input would help make this as good as I can make it, while at the same time help keep the story and RP moving even if things get busy for one of us. If you think you want a part in this, shoot me a PM and we can talk it out! Edited by DVD Player, September 12, 2013, 3:23 pm.

I'm interested and would also like to know more, specifically about Titans and the Meijishu Sovreignity. Does each faction consist of only one race or are they mixed? How do each of the races see the others? You mentioned Hybrids are outcasts, but what do Titans and Humans think of each other? |

Yes, I will get into the factions and political views more. The Sovereignty is mostly comprised of Titans; they have the view that their race is the genetically superior and the next step of human evolution; survival of the strongest. Hybrids have a bit of a representation in this society, but are treated as second-class citizens at best due to their imperfections. Humans are almost never treated well here; any Titan who lives in the Sovereignty looks down upon those who are genetically or biologically inferior and treat humans with contempt for what they had done to the world years ago. Because of this, Titans are the vast majority of the population in this faction, with Hybrids being a bit of a minority and humans being either killed or used as slaves. The Sovereignty is openly hostile to the Republic, and is on-edge with the Outcasts. The Sovereignty has a strict feudal system in their society, and a near-religious zeal for their mission. The Outcasts have the most varied opinion of the other factions. Outcasts generally harbor a distrust towards both the Republic and the Sovereignty for the stigmas and labels placed upon them; but are not openly hostile to either. The vast majority of Outcasts are Hybrids; but there is a big mix of outlaws, traitors, and other rejects of all other races from either faction. Because of this, the Outcasts hold no actual prejudices (although some people may have different views) against other races; but their prejudice lies in political views and social treatment of others. Because of this, the Outcasts can be the most accepting, and the most exclusive of the three. Outcasts treat each other like family; there is no real head-government and everyone is given their own right to chose what to do. Some tribes have chosen leaders, others chose to go it alone. The Republic strives to be an open haven for all races; but because of the Titan Extremists and the stigmas against the "freak of natures" (Hybrids); the Republic ends up with a majority of humans. Republicans have been called hypocrites, as their nation's goal in charter declares equal rights between all races, but the humans hold a distrust and prejudice against Titans because of the extremists living in the Sovereignty. As well, because of their physical appearance and nature; Hybrids are also treated unequal among the civilians. The Republicans believe in law and order, and strive to maintain civilization and unity; almost to a fault. So, to lay it all out: Every individual in the world is entitled to their own opinion; racial prejudices are up to the person and their past, but there are the three main political views in the world: The Sovereignty holds the extremists Titans who believe themselves to be the superior race; The Outcasts hold social rejects, outlaws, and those who have grudges against the societies and governments that turned their faces on them; The Republic holds those who are zealous towards returning the world to its former glory. Titans and Humans are generally at odds; on the one hand, there are the extremist Titans who view humans as weak and corrupt. While on the other hand, there are the extremist humans who believe Titans to be evil for their desire of ruling over others and destroying everything at keeping man civilized and intelligent. A Hybrid's view is very dependent on how loyal they see themselves to their people, and how they are treated in their past. |

I have one major opinion on this RP, I don't think it will work how you have created it Niroth. You said it yourself, you don't use numbers and prefer to have events take place based on their narrative importance and function. Why not remove the various aspects (such as stats) that you are using mostly to placate various members of this community and just run things the way that you prefer? All the various systems we use as administrators of these narratives are created because it makes it easier for us. Moving on, perhaps you should also attempt to explain the actual 'plot' of the story as well. You have given us as good of an overview of the setting as we really need, but what do you intend to happen that will cause our characters to respond and begin the narrative journey, so to speak? |

Hmmm it's a little difficult to summarize, but here yah go: On the ruins of the island nation (name is subject to change), three factions exist at odds: The Meijishu Sovereignty, The New Calion Republic, and those that have been outcast by both. The leader of the Sovereignty, an old Titan who goes by the name of Saul has declared war against the Republic, seeking the destruction of both humanity, and the technology they have preserved. However, in this conflict, something happened that neither expected. When what looked like a star falling from the sky landed on their islands, the bunkers scattered and buried activated, and the technology recovered from their depths began to react. A voice spoke from the sky, a prophecy warning of a new Cataclysm to come. Now the nations of the New World seek to discover what this prophecy means, and what they can do to either stop it; or change it to suit their desires. The secrets of the Old World are soon catching up to those seeking to rebuild, but whatever they are it's up to those who can to decide the future of what could be the entire world. Overall, the plot I have written isn't something I can easily summarize, as there will be many twists and turns throughout it. But I can assure all of you, that what I have is quite good. Yeah, I'll throw this up here if you wanna take a look:
I'm taking NTNP's advice and axing stats and going with the Honor-System. I want this RP to focus more on story and characters than the game-aspect of things. This means that I want the plot to move faster, and less time dicking around with grinding or side-quests with no value to the story (although there will be opportunities for some of that). Also, in terms of combat; whenever an enemy is introduced I will make it VERY APPARENT how strong this character/enemy is in comparison to the protagonists, to give an idea of how the fight should go. As for the Honor-System, I do trust that most of you do know how to make fights that are interesting to read, but to make it clear for those who like to have characters that don't have nothing bad happen to them: HAVING YOUR CHARACTER NEVER GET HIT OR NEVER HAVE ANYTHING BAD HAPPEN TO THEM IS BORING. IT IS BAD WRITING. IT MAKES YOUR CHARACTER BAD, NOT COOL. WHILE I AM INTRODUCING THE POSSIBILITY FOR FAILURE TOWARDS THE MAIN MISSION IN THIS RP, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOUR CHARACTER CAN GET AWAY WITH BEING MR. NEVER-GETS-HIT. MAKE YOUR CHARACTERS IMPERFECT, MAKE THEM FAULTY, AND THEN YOUR CHARACTER WILL BE INTERESTING TO READ AND COOL BECAUSE GROWTH AND BELIEVABLE CHARACTERIZATION MAKE A CHARACTER GOOD; NOT INVINCIBILITY OR PERFECTION. DO NOT STRIVE TO MAKE YOUR CHARACTER SUPERIOR TO OTHERS, BECAUSE THAT ONLY MAKES THEM INFERIOR. And that's out of the way. I'll leave the votes up for this week and then at the end see where things are before throwing up the main topic and starting the RP. Edited by DVD Player, October 6, 2013, 12:52 pm.

![]() Island of Thor: Claimed territory of the New Calion Republic; Thor is the biggest of the three islands with rolling hills and wide plains. While scattered with many large ruins from the cities of old, Thor holds the biggest space for the most fertile farmlands out of the three islands. Points of interest include the expansive hills and ruins, as well as Varyn Lake; largest lake in the land. Warning: all travelers are cautioned to avoid the quarantined area due to high risk of mutilation and death. Significant Locations: A - Varyn County - A well-sized, lake-side town positioned east of the capital. Varyn has been a calm, peaceful town at the edge of the Calion population. While historically the town has had a strained relationship with the capital, the population there has enjoyed a scenic location often visited by travelers and vacationers alike. B - Sanctuary - Capital city of the republic, Sanctuary stands as the largest and most fortified of the three settlements on Thor. High tech and near-impenetrable, the high walls of Sanctuary grant safety to its population. Being granted residence in Sanctuary is often very difficult for most people, due to its limited space (large walls are difficult and costly to expand); however, it may be evident that some people are treated better than others... C - Upalas - Upalas is the smallest of the three settlements on Thor; known for its agricultural community. Upalas provides food to the entirety of the Republic, and sits at the edge of its territory. Due to its position at the edge of Calion territory, its small size, and its large agricultural industry; Upalas has been the target of many raids over its history; but despite the bandits, they always manage to produce more than enough for the rest of the republic. Island of Loki: Loki is the second largest of the islands. Known for the tallest and largest mountain ranges in the country, The Loki Valley is the most arid and possibly inhospitable (except for the Quarantined Zone) land in the country. This island is home to The Outcasts; scattered with many nomadic tribes and camps. Loki is known for many of the largest bunkers in the country, but the people who inhabit the island calmly leave these bunkers alone out of both fear, and reverence. Points of interest include Mt. Vulcan on the northern tip of the island. While these islands are home to a few dormant volcanoes, Vulcan stands as the tallest and oldest. Significant Location: D - Last Haven - The only permanent settlement in all of Loki is not of a large size, or in a well-built state. Haven was built at the foot of the Western Range, between two peaks. While The Outcasts have no central leadership of any kind, this village is home to one of the most regarded members of their community. Beyond the range is a large lake that outsiders and insiders alike are forbidden to enter, due to its proximity to large structure from before the cataclysm. Many have gone there to never return... Island of Odin: Home to the Meijishu Sovereignty; Odin is a lush environment of thick forests and winding rivers. Points of interest include the tall mountains and deep valleys; home of the "Valley of the Fathers"; the biggest forest left out of the three islands, and preserved by the Titans due to both its age, and that it apparently survived the cataclysm a thousand years before. Only specific members of the Sovereignty are granted access into this valley, due to its spiritual and natural significance. Significant Locations: E - Ullr - At the edge of a large delta is the city of Ullr; the only agricultural city in all of Odin. Despite its focus on farming and hunting, Ullr's large size is due to the exclusivity of Aesir, and the general avoidance of Vanir. Because of this, Ullr is the only publicly available city for both Titans and some Hybrids. F - Vanir - Vanir stands as more of a military establishment than a city. Vanir is the main prison-location for captive Hybrids and Humans, known to be a "hell hole" of a town. The Sovereignty felt that it wasn't fit for their prisoners and slaves be forced to live in cells or large structures, and gave them their town; but because of its high walls and heavy military presence, Vanir is more of a prison than a city. Captives who are chosen to be sent to Aesir are either being chosen as a slave for a noble, or being sent to their inevitable deaths in the Colosseum. G - Aesir - Holy city of the Sovereignty, Aesir was built at the food of the largest mountain range on Odin in a small valley. Heavily fortified and highly religious, Aesir is home to nobles, generals, high-ranking officials, and the leader of the Sovereignty itself. Besides its rich and distinguished community, Aesir also holds the large Colosseum where certain captives and slaves are forced to fight either captured foes or each other for the entertainment of those who attend. Island of Tyr: While not large of enough of classified among the three major islands in the country, Tyr is held with significance for its mystery and intrigued. Placed center, between the three islands, Tyr is a rocky plateau known to be impossible to approach and land on. All that anybody knows about the island are the large, pristine structures observed on its surface from a distance. Any information given about the island in any records preserved in the old bunkers are only references containing only its name, and hint at great importance within the higher-ranks of the Old World. |
