On a continent of modest size their lies a thick blanket of black miasma. It seems to cling to the water, but every day it advances further and further toward the main land. People who venture into the miasma are never to be seen again and those that inhale it's potent fumes, soon find themselves void of their soul. Once contact has been made, their is no known medicinal cure. Although some priests and mages are developing spells to counter the effects, they are hunted whenever they are discovered. People willing to put their lives on the line to create a cure are becoming few and far between.

One man is believed to be responsible for the miasma as well as the hunts; the Kingslayer, Atlas. Ruthless in his methods, he aims to rid the continent of souls and pull everyone under his control. After assassinating the previous king, he was quick to establish himself as a massive threat to the well-being of everyone on the continent. He has a large base of loyal followers that grows with each passing moment as people succumb to the effects of the black mist he created, their souls drained from their bodies.

The new king, Bellerophon the Fist quickly rose to prominence after his father's untimely demise. The oldest of three brothers, he leads the charges himself, ruling by example. As such, morale within his kingdom is very high with commoners and nobles alike picking up the fight, following in his footsteps as he attempts to keep the darkness from consuming the land.

Players will take up the role of a member of Bellerophon's kingdom. You'll be restricted to intelligent humanoid races present in typical RPGs: humans, elves, dwarves and anything else within reason. Simple statistics will be implemented in order to maintain balance and help everyone know where they stand in relation to other characters. Events will come into play that will draw on these statistics, such as a boulder blocking the entrance to a cave that only a character with a certain level of strength can move.

Characters will be given missions as part of a group or groups in order to strengthen themselves. Obviously they don't have to accept these missions, but they might fall behind the other characters in terms of level if they put them off. Upon completion, rewards will be given such as stronger weapons, armor, special accessories and the like. I'll have shops available in towns that sell a selection of items and players starting out will be able to equip themselves with items from a pre-made list for the sake of fairness and balance. Ambiguous weapons and armor will be starting items.

As far as statistics go, I think players will be able to start with 20 points to divide amongst 4 stats: Vitality, Strength, Intelligence and Dexterity.

Vitality is obvious: it'll just be your characters health. More vitality means they can take more damage and are more resistant to status ailments and disease.

Strength is pretty obvious as well: how much damage your character can do with a weapon and how much weight they can lift. More means they can dish out a beating better, wear more or heavier armor, carry more weight and push larger objects.

Intelligence will let your character hit harder with magic as well as take less damage from magic. A brute with not intelligence doesn't understand magic, so he'll take more damage from it naturally. It'll also be a deciding factor when dealing with magical hurdles such as barriers and portals, stuff like that. Also, the more intelligence you have, the faster you'll learn new abilities.

Dexterity will be your character's movement ability. Dexterity will determine how fluent they are with using their weapon for melee strikes as well as avoiding enemy attacks. This'll also come into effect when dealing with traps in the environment as well as difficult terrain. It wouldn't hurt to put points in here even if you're a magic-based character.

How exactly would characters working for Atlas act? Does them not having souls effect them besides I'm assuming robbing them of the free-will to resist his orders?

That's pretty much the nail on the head. If they're working for Atlas, they don't get to choose really. They do what he says or their head comes off, for the most part.

Ok. So they still have their free-will for the most part. How many stats will there be?

I'm still trying to fine-tune that aspect to try and keep it precise but simple. It's a fine line, I believe. XD

Sounds simple enough, but not for that less interestening. Are there going to be unexpected plot twists and such?

Also what if I make a character with only one spell? Will that spell be really powerful and useful? Say, generate a force field, will it be pretty much impenetrable?

Of course! The RP will be relatively free-form, but there's still an over-arching story in place to keep things moving.

You could have one spell, yeah. But keep in mind that the more powerful the enemy you're fighting, the less effective it will be. As their level goes up, your spell stops being as effective. A boss fight is a good example. You might be able to protect yourself or someone against a single hard-hitting attack before the barrier breaks because the boss will be much stronger than the player characters.

Provided he's not a ghost that can inhabit armor and is actually a person, yeah. I'd rather keep supernatural elements as enemies.

It's a black fog that surrounds the continent. It's pretty much a convenient way of establishing a barrier. When living creatures breathe it in, they get the feeling that their energy is being drained before their soul is eventually consumed and they pretty much become a zombie who takes orders from Atlas. They can still talk and communicate as normally as they could before, they just lack the will do make decisions on their own that deviate from their assigned task. If Atlas or another commander tells them to do something, they can made decisions about how to go about certain aspects of it, but they still need to do as they're told.

I've decided that it's probably for the best if players don't fight for the bad guys since our player versus player fights seem to run on forever more often than not. It'll be easier to keep things in order this way as well and it'll allow me to focus on creating antagonists instead of dividing my time and energy.

Here's the map of the continent that the RP takes place on, Etella.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Towns:

Celcius
A relatively small town nestled amongst the snow dunes of the north. It is always cold here, but the people who live amongst the chilling winds of winter are hardened and adept at survival in even the most uninhabitable conditions imaginable. People from Celcius tend to have high constitution and a hardened immune system capable of fighting off disease better than others.

The town itself consists primarily of small houses the hold a single family. The houses are done-shaped and often made of stone and ice to protect against the violent storms that plague the area. A mayor runs the town and is in charge of procuring supplies to keep the people under his care alive and well. The town possess a small militia to fight off creatures and bandits that plague the snow and are always on guard.

Most of what the townsfolk need for survival they create themselves with the exception of vegetables and fruit which are brought in under heavy guard via dog sled caravans.

Dragarde
A large city filled to the brim with hardened warriors both humble and arrogant. The main attraction of the city is it's massive Colosseum which hosts combat-based competitions between any who care to enter. The bloodbaths that take place within draw crowds from all over the continent.

Being a city based around violence, the strongest man is usually the one in charge, although no elected official holds any power. The homes and buildings are relatively well-kept since the funds brought in from the Colosseum helps to maintain the city as a whole. Still, it is a place where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and as such, it's seldom the rich who take up the sword to fight in the arena. More often than not, the poor are forced to fight and as such, the city will most likely never change.

The city is surrounded by farmlands making Dragarde mostly self-sufficient. The city exports any surplus meat, fruit and vegetables as well to several other cities on the continent.

Koval
Another large city the contents of which is primarily kept secret. Being the home of the Kingslayer Atlas, few outside of his reign of control dare to venture in and as such, most of what lies within is unknown.

The city of Koval seems to be self-sufficient since no goods are brought in and nothing is exported.

Parte
A city nestled within the desert. While the sands that surround it are a harsh and unforgiving no-man's land, the city itself is quite the opposite. Often called "The Party Center", it is a city that never sleeps. Magic is the main source of energy and it allows the glow of the lights to form a perpetual rainbow glow on the horizon that can be seen from almost any point of elevation as far away as the cold of the tundra.

With such an abundance of life, the city itself is a haven for a higher class of crime. Gangs and organizations run the gambling attractions and control most of the streets, all very different apart from one rule: "You don't mess with us, we don't mess with you". Minding your own business here is the name of the game.

The city imports most of it's resources and as such, prices are often quite high. Unless you absolutely need it, buy it somewhere else.

Tel
A small town surrounded by mountains and water, the people of Tel tend to keep much to themselves. With the smallest population of any city or town on the continent, this is typically a place where the elderly reside in order to be away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world. With no large attractions and very little in the way of accommodations, most travellers tend to ignore this place entirely. However, since the town is populated by people of age, it can be a very knowledgeable place if you know who to talk to.

Most of the inhabitants here live comfortably with little to know worry. The oldest member of the town acts as the mayor and is currently said to be over eight hundred years old.

Very little is brought into the town and very little goes out, but the town doesn't seem to be self-sufficient. There are very little farmlands and little in the way of natural resources, so it's safe to assume that the people of the town have found another way to sustain themselves.

Quina
A resort city located farthest south of any other city on the continent. Known as a place of pleasure and relaxation, Quina is the go-to spot for a good time away from the woes of everyday life. Beaches, spas, hot springs, massage parlors and clothiers keep the economy going here and this city is one of the wealthiest cities in the land because of it (although you couldn't tell by looking). Much of the structures here are built of wood and the place looks to be little more than a shanty town. But the people who live here as well as the people who come to visit, instantly fall in love with its charms.

Crime is practically non-existent here since everyone is so content with how things are. Merchants are in abundance as well and rare items from all across the land go in and out of different sets of hands within Quina. If you're after something rare and exquisite, look no further.

Most of the foodstuffs the people of Quina consume are imported since there is no farm lands at all for miles. Still, hunting is a popular sport, making the forest to the north a dangerous place for travellers to pass. Sometimes, people just don't know what they're attacking until it's too late.
