To be fair the way it was written, it seemed like a very bad idea to use empathic attacks on him because then he did things like blow up cars and other dangerous things... |

tl:dr: characterization likes to get in the way of plot. We should clearly just do comedies. |

Lord of the Octoroks, all hail!

CoH moved ultra fast because back then we could tell stories without feeling the need to write 5000 words each post. Most times it's filler. |

Wait do you mean me and Green? I wanted to have a cool psychic battle but for the sake of progression I figured it would be best to just move along. As for everything else, doing teamwork in individual turns (as much as I have that word) is fairly difficult, but I do agree that some of the stuff was over the top. What was the plot point that nobody got to see? Anyways, Twi had a good point: no overarching plot. Just character arcs. The only problem, though, is people bickering over who gets the spotlight, which could be somewhat alleviated by having the plots converge and diverge at various points. Sure, it might require a bit of lone wolfing, but a little bit isn't bad and allows for decent character development. Just as long as they aren't a grimdark loner for the whole arpee. |

To clarify: Nothing wrong with overarching plots in and of themselves, it's just that they're had to pull off in a roleplay setting like this (at least, I think). Because it requires you to have some control over how people behave. Being roleplaying, people tend to go with their character rather than grabbing the Plot Convenience Ball. Also, teamwork is indeed hard. That said, smaller doses of plot and direction are definitely more suitable for the freeform RP setting. Less dependent on one person, easier to get everyone to do, less likely to induce butthurt. (I think. :V) |

What if instead of trying to do these EPIC ADVENTURES and write what is basically the roleplay equivalent of the Lord of the Rings--an epic journey that covers every point on the map, finishes an overarching plotline with plenty of character development and side plots, and lets everybody go from rags to epic firebolt throwing gods of everything--we took things more like, one adventure at a time? For instance, characters find themselves captured by slave traders and taken to an arena in a desert city. They have a few--hopefully very few--fights as gladiators before finding a way to escape. Once they escape, the story is over. They have one task they set out to accomplish, only a few--preferably 3 or less--obstacles to overcome, and a wee bit of development along the way, then they're done. If we really like it, we reuse them for other, equally short adventures that slowly go up in scale. |

Some sort of incentive needs to be established if you'd like to see players working together, else "rule of cool" will dominate and everybody is going to do what they want to with little regard to paltry consequences. If the team works together, maybe it opens the way for synchronizing their abilities, like was done in Tales of Scion, and maybe this leads the way to development of stronger abilities in the characters. If they do poorly, the poor mental connections between them start working against them in the form of mental backlash or power reductions. If you want the players to work together, give them a reason, otherwise most will try to weasel their way into the spotlight alone. |

I wouldn't mind that, especially if it builds into some :masterstroke: |

Dude, you can't blame everyone else just because YOU can't adapt. Adaptation in an admin is pretty important because everyone has different ideas and will do things differently. NEXT TO NOTHING will pan out how you want it, so just learn to roll with it. On another note, some people do need to start paying more attention both to your posts and the posts of others. I mean, I had to have Leon save Alti and Altia because NEARLY NO ONE PAID ATTENTION TO ALTI'S POST, and those that did couldn't save them because of circumstance. Also, people missed a good chance to take out Travis after Lara and Niflhim attacked his head empathically. Can anybody see what I mean? How that could impact our story? I can. EDIT: I wouldn't mind trying that either, Onime. Edited by Green, May 19, 2013, 7:57 pm.
