Thousands of years ago, the Holy Goddess descended upon the world and created the continent and all the life on it. This included two races of people: the humans and the dragons. After the Goddess left, the humans and the dragons got along for a while before they started to have differences. As generations of humans lived and died, the dragons started to see them as inferior beings. They weren't as strong, weren't as wise, and didn't have the connection to the elements that the dragons did. The dragons eventually tried to rule the humans, and with their power, the humans were kept in chains. However, that all changed with the discovery of magic. This allowed the humans to tap into arcane power, and these mages rose up and rebelled against their dragon oppressors. After a series of fierce wars spanning hundreds of years, the dragons were defeated. Instead of wiping them out, the wise sages and mighty commanders who led the humans decided to seal the dragons' powers into stones, preventing them from unleashing their true power. They were then banished into the farthest corners of the land, never to be seen again. However, with the dragons gone, mankind turned on each other. Everyone wanted to be a ruler, and there were many territorial disputes, with nearly all of them ending in bloodshed. Although a handful of major powers were eventually established, the thirst for land was never quenched. One of the smaller lands, Astigode, was facing a particularly rough time. It was situated right in the center of the continent, and its king was in ailing health with no heir. As the land was torn apart and claimed by different countries after the king died, one man rose up and declared that it was time for a change. Athelstan the Great, as he was called later in life, came out of nowhere to defend Astigode against the greedy rulers who wanted to snatch up the land, and went on to lead a bloody conquest spanning his entire lifetime. With powers that could only be described as "divine", he led his armies personally and beat every nation that opposed him into submission, absorbing them into what he called "The Unification Alliance". His goal was simple: a continent united under one flag, where there would be no bloodshed for territory or financial gain. Finally, after many long years, he achieved his goal and was beloved by his people for it. He turned "The Continental Alliance" into "The Continental Empire", and promised that so long as there was an united Empire, the people would be protected. Now, many years and Emperors later, the Empire is showing signs of weakness. Monsters appear to be multiplying, turning from a manageable nuisance into a true threat. Brigands ravage towns on the fringes of the Empire, causing nobles to flee and leave commoners to die. The faithful turn to the Church of Abilene for guidance, while the less-so become criminals and fugitives, adding to the chaos. Rebellion is being whispered amongst the populace. Will the Empire hold itself together? And at what cost? Will it be for the good of the people, or for the good of the rich? This is my Fire Emblem RP: Mark of Divinity. Although it does draw heavily from other Fire Emblem games, the setting is original, as are the characters. There are no maps or formulas. There are the standard Fire Emblem stats (Str, Mag, Spd, and the like), but these are only used to show a character's strength and weaknesses, and how they compare to other characters. This will be a faction-based RP. There are many groups who are trying to either keep their power or get more of it, and your character will ultimately align themselves with one or more of these groups to further their own goals or beliefs. However, your character is somehow destined for greatness. Maybe they can feel it, maybe they can't, but there's a power deep inside of them that will eventually unleash itself, and they'll certainly need it for the battles to come. As for how the actual RP will run, I'm going to be handling it much like the Fire Emblem games. There will be battles and character interaction, and that's pretty much it. At first I'll be controlling many of the "big" people in the setting, though as the RP progresses and things change, your character might find him or herself in a leading role. At first I would like to ask you only have one character until I get used to all of you, then you can start introducing more characters who belong to different factions or just the same faction, if you want. Speaking of the factions, here are the main ones that will be playing a role in the beginning of the RP: The Continental Empire: Led by Emperor Arthur Athelstan, a direct descendant of Athelstan the Great. Although he is strong and possesses the same strange power his ancestor did, he is actually rather lazy and content to let his advisers take care of the Empire's problems while using public appearances to inspire loyalty in the people. Characters allied with the Empire in the beginning will be sent to Patrius to assist the Council of Sages. The Council of Sages: Led by the Seven Sages, each specializing in a type of magic. Although they answer to the Empire, they have been allowed to remain their own group. They are mostly subservient to the Empire, but a woman named Cassandra Ruglia has ascended through the ranks of mages, with her own ambitions in mind. In the beginning of the RP, the legendary Fire Magic, Protignis, has apparently been stolen, and characters allied with the Council are part of the group sent to retrieve it. The Church of Adilene: Led by Priestess Superior Winifred Clairkin. The church worships the Holy Goddess, and is a largely female-dominated religion, much like its country of origin, Fene. The teachings of Adilene, the Church's prominent saint, have spread and many throughout the continent pray to the Holy Goddess because of their efforts. Characters allied with the Church will also be sent to Patrius to assist in recovering the lost tome Protignis. However, they are also tasked with observing Patrius and determining whether or not the Council has something to do with the increase in monsters throughout the continent. The Bearers of The Guardian Flame: Led by Emelia Daniellekin, the very woman who supposedly stole Protignis, and formed a rebellion named after it. Not well-known outside of Patrius, or really inside of Patrius, but Emelia has alerted the Council of Sages by supposedly running off with the legendary Fire spell that rightfully belongs to the Red Sage of the Council. The Council of Sages has solid information that Emelia and her few allies are located in the West Isles, planning on gathering the assistance of pirates. The Council has ordered her captured alive - before she can rally enough people together and make use of the legendary magic. So yeah, this is just a topic to see how many of you would be interested in a RP like this. There's obviously a lot more information (regions, classes, weapons, skills) that I would post before you guys make your characters, but this is the general scheme that I'm plotting. Please reply in this topic if you're interested, and I'll answer any questions to the best of my abilities. |

Why is the Empire showing signs of weakness? What problems does it have aside from the Emperor's laziness? If the Empire was loved because it put an end to the past wars and bloodshed, why would the people rebel against it? What does the rebellion hope to accomplish? Do the dragons still exist? What kind of monsters exist, and where did they come from? The way it looks now I think I might give it a try, but the answers to these questions would greatly help my understanding of the plot. |

Thanks for the interest guys! Well, the Empire is showing signs of weakness because of the aforementioned brigands and monsters. Brigands and monsters have always existed, it's just that the Empire has been able to take care of them until now. With the very sudden surge, the Empire has soldiers stretched thin, and towns and villages (especially farther away from the Empire) are starting to get overrun. The generations that remember the war and bloodshed the Empire stopped have died out, and the current citizens only know the Empire for its promise: to protect the people. Now that the Empire is failing at that, the people are starting to become nervous. The Empire has already failed a few times in the past hundred or so years, such as being unable to control the nomads of the plains country Kassa, and underestimating a brigand threat that ended up in an entire region's government become destroyed. However, the rebellion is a different story. The girl behind it is more of a revolutionary, who believes that the time of the Empire has come and gone. She ultimately wishes to bring down the Empire, return to each region being in control of itself, and hopefully demolish the feudal class system along the way. Only then, she believes, can the continent be strong enough to protect themselves, instead of relying on some distant Emperor to do it for them. The Guardian Flame starts small in the RP, but quickly grows and moves around the continent, and characters are welcome to join it as it does so. Dragons still exist, they just live on the corners of the continent in places humans could never hope to (frozen mountains, volcanoes, etc). For the beginning of the RP I won't be allowing dragon characters, but after a certain point they'll be reintroduced into the story, and I'll allow it then. Monsters have been on the continent for as long as mankind can remember, and nobody's quite figured out how they came to be (though it will be revealed eventually in the RP). Monster types include all those that can be found in Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones, including: revenants (zombies), mauthe doogs (demon wolves), bonewalkers (skeletons), gargoyles, tarvos (demon centaurs), mogalls (demon eyes), and more. How did the numbers of the brigands get so big that they could conceivably cause trouble for an entire Empire's army? The Empire is as big as what, five or more countries put together, right? How could a country of such a size, with such a massive military force, have any kind of trouble with brigands? How and why would the numbers of brigands increase so much so rapidly? Why would people turn to criminal lives instead of just turning into beggars or poor folk? Does the Empire not punish criminals or keep them in prisons or something? |

I also have some questions. What exactly is the purpose of having essentially 3 allied factions (Empire, Church and Magi-Imperials) doing the exact same thing? Isn't that rather redundant? Also in relation to Onime's question above, how did the various "generic bandits" become so powerful? If anything, shouldn't they be a faction as well with their own story line and purpose? This has some merit (as do all stories) but I feel like it just doesn't have enough information provided to realistically help us decide if we like it or not. |
