This is an experiment I'm doing. Think of it as a cross between a CYOA and an RP--only this time, instead of the admin making a post every time, all the choices are laid out before hand. Here are the RULES: 1. PLAY WITH AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE. 2. MAKE A POST BEFORE OPENING A NEW TAG. After you click the start tag, for example, you see the "You've Opened the Door" tag. Make a POST that covers the moments between the start and that door opening tag, and give us your character's perspective of events and what not just as if you were reacting to an admin's post. 3. USE LOCATION TAGS. You know, how we usually do things in an RP to let people know where we are. This way if multiple players get to the same room via different tags, they can still team up. 4. DON'T READ AHEAD AND FOLLOW THE TAGS. If the tag says not to read it unless you've done something, don't read it until you've done that task. This relies on player honor, but if you break it it'll ruin the experiment and the fun. 5. BE CREATIVE AND WRITE YOUR OWN STORY. I won't be controlling the enemies here, and the setting's description is vague in places so that you can fill in all the details yourself. But don't just stomp all your opponents instantly, make it a good read. 6. WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED, LET ME KNOW. START

Edwin on Floor One: Start -> Open the Door -> Right Side Door (next post) You reach the top of the hill after a long climb over a rocky, little used road overgrown with nettles and briars. The brush has finally given way to open air, and you see the setting sun dip below the indigo silhouette of the faraway mountains. But the true target of your search now lies before you--the grand castle of the vampire Lord Gehenis. The monster has terrorized the villages in the valleys below for years, and it is time he is stopped. That is how you came upon this task, though for reasons only you could know. Our hero of this journey, just like so many others was none other than Edwin. After far too many of these little trials to count, the old ranger merely smiled at his surroundings. As the ranger walked through the courtyard, he stopped at the various flowers and poisonous plants. Carefully he selected a few and put them into his pouch. While he might not be able to use it any time soon, the deadly nightshade and poisonous blooms might always come in handy eventually. As he continued his care free stroll between the statues of knights, overgrown with moss and creeper vines he climbed the crumbling steps. Gazing up at the castle walls loom around like the arms of some great giant he couldn't help but wonder if he could get up there at some point. Honestly if anything bad happened hiding up there and shooting at his foes wouldn't be too bad of an idea. Carefully Edwin began to push open the doors, halfway expecting some great force to knock him backward or to be faced by a horde of bats. Thankfully, the haunted castle hadn't quiet lived up to his expectations. He had found himself in a grandiose lobby of sorts. A velvet red carpet creates a path over the cold stones to a great fountain at the opposite end of the room; it is made of marble, with a great golden statue of an anguished woman who cries ever flowing tears. Instantly the ranger was drawn to the statue. He went over to examine it, first checking it to see if it was gold and then trying to see if there was any sort of an enchantment on it. Experience always said that checking strange things like that would always be worth while. If nothing else so on his way back he could try to chip off the head and use it as a cash prize if the villagers welched. And god above, you wouldn't believe how often they welched on the reward. As he stared at the golden bits and tried to see if anything would move he gazed toward the corners of the rooms. While somewhat hidden behind the great staircases, there were two more double doors. It was interesting that someone would attempt to hide them. After laying with the statue for a while, Edwin started following the path between the great columns and crossed to the left of the fountain to reach the great stairs. The trip up was rather uneventful. The landing is entirely covered in the crimson carpet, and two balconies reach out along the walls back towards the entrance, great beams of day's last light falling through the arching windows above them. Looking around there seemed to be three options. There was a single corridor leading to another set of double doors. On either side of this corridor stands a knight statue just like those in the courtyard, but these are well cared for and look brand new--yet the carpet around them is depressed, showing that they have stood there for quite some time. It looked like he had a choice to make. To the left, the right or upstairs. Quickly Edwin made his way back downstairs to the fountain. Not particularly because it seemed safer but mostly because it was closest to the door in case the walls started bleeding and he needed to make a run for it. Always better to be safe than sorry. On the way in, it seemed like there wasn't any particular side of the castle that was larger than the other... but then again he only saw two or three floors up. There might be more down below. In the end he settled on a simpler way of deciding, thinking back to stories he had heard before. The big bad is always hiding either on the topmost floor or in the basement. This is a vampire, so he probably would want somewhere dark and foreboding. Plus probably not on the highest tower since you know, one good bomb around noon and he's become a pyre minus the stick, so money's on the basement. Well I guess that means that it's probably a waste of time to head upstairs. So left or right... well there isn't any particular rhyme or reason to that one. At that, the ranger was stumped. After taking far too long coming up with a witty remark he just smiled as he stood up. "Eh, screw it let's head right. Maybe it's the right thing to do." Looking back and forth he waited to hear a giggle. But it never came. He had just realized that he was alone in this little journey... all that time coming up with a joke for naught... |

The great entrance doors behind Edwin suddenly burst open, a blast of wind careening down the hall and blowing out the torches sconced along the walls. "GEHENIS!" called a voice thrumming with power as a long shadow, one bearing a great cloak that billowed in the wind and grasping a gnarled staff in one clawed hand, stretched along the floor. "I'VE COME TO COLLECT ON YOUR DEBT--PLUS INTEREST!" Slowly, the bearer of the shadow came closer to Edwin, the staff thump-thump-thumping upon the stones. The shadow shrank now in the darkness to the size of a normal man--and then shrank even further as the one who cast it came into full view. "Who the bloody fuck are you?" came a somewhat prepubescent voice around Edwin's midsection. A boy, surely no more than twelve or so, looked up at the archer with crimson eyes full of suspicion, his venomous green hair framing his baby face in angular spikes. The cloak around his shoulders was really just an oversized blanket, stolen from someone's wash line by the look of it, and tied around his throat in a simple knot. He had a huge manacle over his right hand, its sides blazoned with runes, and wore a dark colored tunic over purple shorts that, from the tears around the knees, were probably a pair of purloined trousers that the boy had cut up to fit his size. His leather sandals were the only pieces of his attire that seemed to fit properly. But his staff was the real thing--the gnarled wood look as if it were mummified flesh, winding up to frame a dimly glowing white crystal. "If you're one of Gehenis's stupid servants, go tell that fucker that Dark Lord Xega has come to collect on that bet! After 500 years, he damned well better have it!" |

As Edwin was joined by the diminutive foul-mouthed little boy calling himself Dark Lord Xega, the duo would be able to hear another noise approaching them from the darkness looming behind the great entrance hall doors. They probably would have been able to see who it was if Xega hadn't just blown out all of the torches, but as it was, all they had to go on were the footsteps coming closer, along with the sounds of...whistling. It was a light-hearted tune, decidedly out of place, given the environment surrounding them. Most would find a place such as this far too oppressive and gloomy to maintain good cheer, but the source of the whistling didn't sound like he minded in the slightest. The tune grew louder and louder as the figure approached, though it didn't really get much easier to see him in the darkness as he came closer. Finally, he entered into the room proper, standing apart from Xega and Edwin as he continued to whistle for a few more seconds. Eventually though, he came to the end of whatever song he was whistling, and after letting it trail off into silence, held up a hand, generating sparks of electricity. The room was suddenly filled with light once again, and the figure was revealed. "Oh. Hey there. Did you guys come to take care of the Vampire problem too?" Matt asked in a breezy, confident sounding tone as he took in the room and it's inhabitants with an easy-going grin on his face. "I was beginning to think I was the only one. You haven't found him yet have you?" |

Xavier taking the direct route apparently… The lights of the town were far past the horizon now. The rocky little road, overgrown with nettles and briars had not been maintained in years now. As the iron gates got closer, it was finally time to dismount and take the rest of this journey on foot. An exhausted looking brown horse in green and gold cloth stood just before the decrepit courtyard, neighing slightly as a great weight was taken off her. A large man in green armor, platemail from the look of it, petted the creature’s face gently. Underneath the rounded helm, a soft voice echoed as a cold gust raced from the decrepit mansion standing before them. “Shush, it’s alright. I will be coming back soon Dottie, just stay here ok?” The knight took a large shield off the horse’s side and attached it to his arm. It was heavy, but nothing that he could not handle. After shifting around the breastplate, gauntlets and greaves he felt back to normal. After that long ride, all his precious armor had become disjointed something horrible. The mace on his side clanged as he walked around the purple and blue flowers. The statues of knights, overgrown with years of neglect were crumbling. He sadly smiled, “Once this place had meant a great deal to someone, it had been their entire world keeping it worthy of their master’s gaze. I’m sure that he’s rolling over in his grave now.” Gently the old oak doors squeaked as he opened them. The room had been beautiful once upon a time. A grandiose entryway for guests, lit up with candles as the walls were lined with servants. Part of Xavier wished he had been born in a place like this, but maybe he could someday he would be able to afford somewhere like this for himself. Of course, if he did ever get a place like this the golden statue in the middle of the room would have to go. A woman should never be anguished like that, not in stone nor in person. Why someone would spend so much time immortalizing suffering like this was beyond him. That person might be worse than Gehenis himself. The two great stairways instantly grabbed Xavier’s attention. Slowly he followed the crimson path upward. It was hard on his knees to make it, but it seemed like the only option really. More of those stone statues that had lined the garden guarded the double doors, made of oak like downstairs. I suppose that is as close to fate as I will find here. Let us see where the knight’s path will lead me this time. As he reached out toward the door, a great puff of dust sprayed from the stone guardians as their blades crossed in front of him. Instinctively he raised his shield before taking a look at what was moving. Apparently, even knights made of granite held tightly to their duty. The one of the left began to step off its pedestal Xavier lunged forward with his mace, striking the creature in the helm before jabbing forward with his shield. The creature continued to move as the majority of the head shattered, sending shards onto the ground. Then the mace rocketed down again, splitting it down the middle causing massive cracks to form on the left shoulder and the neck. The other stone creature seemed utterly ignorant of its partner’s fate. The creature raised up its blade and then smashed it downward onto Xavier’s back. The armor had taken the majority of the hit, but the loud cracking noise coming from inside probably meant that it hit something. Then there was a warm sensation going down to his rear. However, he felt no pain, just adrenal. Quickly the knight turned and pressed his shield into the sword and then smashed down with his mace, shattering the golem’s elbow and causing the weapon to fall to the ground. The golem on the right, now headless and covered in cracks rose up its blade. A quick glance and the knight knew what was coming, a powerful blow meant to destroy in a single blow. He had dealt with many soldiers who favored power attacks. It was effective against the inexperienced, but to those who knew the style it was merely a flashing sign saying dodge. Xavier began backpedaling, keeping his shield out in front of him as the weaponless golem stomped toward him. The next moment there was a burst of stone splinters flying as the right knight shattered the left one with it’s power attack. Almost as if lost by the loss of a friend, the golem just stood there frozen. As unfortunate as it was, there could be no mercy in battle. Xavier brought his mace back and then smashed forward aiming at the same spot as before, causing the left shoulder to shatter and send the arm down onto the ground. Backing up a little further, Xavier could only look at the destroyed golems. They were still active, in a way. Their torsos were still present and the legs were moving. Occasionally a shield would still move, but overall they had become pliable enough. They would be no further threat, that was for sure. The knight began walking forward into the room ahead, a circular chamber that lead to every other part of the mansion. But it became immediately clear that he wasn’t alone when a crackling laugh echoed through the room and something started darting across the ceiling. An arrogant sounding voice, "So you have come to slay me!?" roared across the room as a finely dressed man landed in front of him. This person, likely Gehenis, was well dressed in all the finery of a noble with a great red and black cape. A ruby amulet set in a bat-shaped brooch lies upon his breast, and golden rings adorn his fingers. The vampire’s eyes began crackling as he laughed, "Very well--try your best!" The fine looking golden rings crackled for a second as he pointed toward the knight, then a burst of lightning flashed across the room toward Xavier. The light illuminated the room, revealing exactly how long this room was without human touch. Spider webs filled the corners and a thick layer of dust was everywhere. Like so often in life, the only choice when dealing with a mage was to rush headlong and deal with whatever they might throughout as you approached. The blast hit the knit shield, sending sparks everywhere as Xavier tried to cut down the distance between them. Then a gust of wind ripped over him, causing small bits of chain to fly off and the iron on the outside to splinter apart ever so slightly. Getting closer now, one of the empty suits of armor began to shake as the decorative sword went flying out of its hand and into Gehensis’ own. Once again, the vampire laughed, about to make a witty remark as the living battering ram continued to rush forward, smashing his field into the undead. With all the force he possessed, Xavier kept storming forward until the two of them slamming into the wall causing the tapestries above to fall and the paintings to crash onto the floor. The vampire made a sputtering noise as he tried to make another remark, only to be met with another strong jab forward with the shield. As the vamp stayed stunned for a moment, Xavier took a step back and then slammed his mace into the creature’s chest. While the focus had been trying to crush his ribs, the bright red gemstone seemed very suspicious. It was worthwhile crushing it, and then if that did not work, aiming at the hands and rings would be his next target. Undead creatures like that; they always had a weakness in the form of soul binding. The ruby amulet took the brunt of the hit, causing it to shatter. Suddenly a burst of red mist poured out the stone and caused the vampire obvious pain. Nevertheless, it did not faze the knight, not for a split second. He just kept smashing repeatedly at the fallen noble’s head and chest. Over and over, bits of the noble kept flying off the vampire until it was little more than a disfigured mess. As the creature slumped over, Xavier kept smashing into it with his mace. Then a dark glow overtook the duo as pain ripped through Xavier’s muscles. The vampire was trying to drain his strength, pulling his strength and making it his own. There was little to do, he had to keep swinging over and over again, trying desperately to inflict more damage than was being healed. Just as the knight started losing his strength to swing, his mace felt weightless as it was lifted from his hands. The vampire growled as he grabbed onto the knight’s helm, tightening his grasp on him as the iron rod was tossed across the floor, sending dust clouds in its wake. Then something truly strange happened. A bright healing light began pouring from Xavier’s hands. He pushed his palm into the vampire’s chest, causing the creature to scream out in pain. After a moment, the vampire had fallen to the ground. It’s soul gem was shattered and it’s decomposing body was being filled with positive energy, injuring it further. It felt like half an hour of cold mercy before the body finally stopped moving entirely. Usually vampires refused to die, but if you just kept up the spell, eventually they would have to drop dead. Not to mention that having a soul gem shattered likely would have killed the creature outright assuming that the soul did not return to their original owner. Either way though, it was over now. With Gehensis dead on the ground in goopy pieces, Xavier started walking away slowly as he looked for his lost weapon. The mace had taken some damage, but after shooking the bits of undead off it seemed little worse from wear. Later that night he would take the dead body out to the front yard and burn it, making sure for the last time that the fiend’s reign was over. After breaking up a few pieces of furniture from the main hall, Xavier threw the noble’s body on top and then lit the thing on fire. With the flames flickering with morning’s first light on the horizon, this truly was a new day for this village. Looking up at the vampire’s mansion, the knight finally removed his helm revealing a middle-aged man with short brown hair and an exhausted expression. His shoulder ached from the golem’s blade and his entire form felt drained after the battle with the vampire. Even after everything, the old knight smiled ever so slightly as the shadow of the great mansion finally lifted. “This might not be a bad place to live. I wonder if I could get the villagers to let me have this place instead of the chest of gold…” |
