I'll be your Undertaker this evening
A knight is sworn to valour.
His heart knows only virtue.
His blade defends the helpless.
His might upholds the weak.
His word speaks only truth.
His wrath undoes the wicked.

--The Old Code of the First Knights

I here swear fealty and do homage to my lord;
to ever be a good knight and true,
reverent and generous,
shield of the weak,
obedient to my liege-lord,
foremost in battle,
courteous at all times,
champion of the right and the good.
Thus swear I...

--The Oath of all Knights of Logres

In the southern lands of civilized men, far from the barbaric wilderness of the North, lies the great kingdom of Logres. For many an age has Logres prospered and flourished, and its kings ruled with a strong and just hand. So it was until the time of King Tristain. Though Tristain was a fair ruler and did the kingdom no great injustice compared to his predecessors, it was during his reign that the North became much agitated. The Barbarian tribes came together as one under Sverir Fydar and stormed down the Throttle, that narrow strip of land connecting our world to theirs.

Logres's armies had slowly begun to dwindle and the days had grown long since their cities and towns repaired and maintained their walls and towers; the last two-score years had been so peaceful that, for a time, the Knights of Logres feared their order might cease to exist. In its weakened state the kingdom was slow to halt the charge of the Northmen. The wild hordes swept across the Broadback Mountains, and though the wedge that was the Aegis divided their forces it did not stop them. The men of Bristel were caught unprepared, and only when the guard of Eastbridge marched to their defense did the Northerners cease a relentless assault.

But while an uneasy stalemate persisted on one side of the mountains, King Tristain and his sons, brilliant younger Rhys and strong elder Conall, drove the barbarians back across the mountains. From the Hilt that had not seen battle in half a century and the depths of Nightwood came their armies, and even the strange, swift longboats from Yamajima hassled any northmen who thought to slink along the sloping shores below the Broadback. Landing at Eastbridge, the islanders added their forces to the other half of the army, while the King and his sons reinforced the Aegis. The Logermen drove their foes back in a matter of months, and once again peace reigned; however, unlike the lazy days of before, these were days filled with activity such as the hive of bees at the onset of spring.

The King gave his sons leave to separate tasks--Rhys was to oversee the gathering of resources and make plans for reconstruction, while Conall was tasked with strengthening the armies and repairing what damage had been done to the great fortress Aegis, for it was a cornerstone of their victory and all felt that they would have sore need of it in the future. Tristain himself took a host to Waveguard to lay plans for naval warfare and consider the possibilities of raiding the north to further cement their victory. Because the war had turned so many boys to men and men to soldiers, and soldiers had performed deeds that earned them lands and titles, the Knights of Logres found their ranks swelling like never before, and set about hosting great tournaments and games and breaking in their new castles.

But soon Logres faced a new crisis. Whether his age began to catch up with him, or as a result of the stress of the war, or because of the exposure to the harsh northern elements...perhaps for all of these reasons, the King fell ill. He was quickly rushed back to Kingsport to receive proper treatment, but the trip proved too much for him. Frail and fragile, he died in the arms of his youngest son Rhys, and both brothers wept from the bottom to the top of the mountains.

As the kingdom was still in the midst of reconstruction, it was agreed that Rhys would take over the management of the kingdom while Conall continued strengthening the defensive lines and making plans for the northern invasion. At this time, both were sure that Conall, as the eldest, would naturally inherit the crown. But as weeks turned to months, Rhys became more and more convinced that his brother was not the ruler that the people of Logres needed. Whether lust for power or simple logic dominated his thoughts, none can say. But Rhys soon declared his intentions to his brother, and after a flurry of angry letters between them, Logres found itself divided down the middle. Conall, entrenched in the impenetrable Aegis, demanded the crown by the right of eldest son and head of the family line, as well as by right of strength, for their father had left him in charge of the military. He had been raised and groomed for this moment for years before his brother had even been born, and to have his birthright snatched away was nothing short of treason. Rhys denied this on the grounds that Logres needed proper guidance, and its people needed a king that Conall could not become. He placed the crown upon his own head and claimed that for the common good and for the betterment of all he would take upon himself all responsibility.

The Knights of Logres were divided between these two according to those whose lands and banners belonged to the different territories each brother claimed, with the exception of those who chose one side or the other for their own personal reasons. Now, what will surely become a bloody civil war begins...

Brothers of Idlewood

Strength, Honor, Valor

Trent explained how he learned to move the way he did. He'd learned from the fist fighter Red. "Did you now?" William asked humbly. "It makes sense, every movement is based on how quickly you change direction." The elder brother continued, hopping backwards to evade an incoming slash. "Agility.." He trailed off. Parrying the next few attacks he finally managed to say: "It's not a bad way to fight. Although I do wonder what you'll do when it comes to war...marching row upon row and column upon column." Keeping form, the swordsman paused. "Perhaps you'll be part of a flanking group?" He questioned to himself more than anyone.

While Trent and William sparred with one another, Austin was hard at work. Against a wooden post he practiced the familiar strikes when wielding a sword and shield. The sound of his trainer sword and shield against the training dummy beat out a rhythm. They almost struck in unison, making their marks very shortly after the other. His shirt had collected a little bit of sweat and it lay to the side among the dirt leaving him in linen pants and leather boots. Like every other soldier, his body was ripped and toned well.

A final clash of wood against wood sounded as the younger brother of Idlewood turned to face the fist fighter. While he stretched, the veteran approached him with a smile. He showed no hostility, his weapons weren't even readied as he stopped about six feet in front of him.

"Red, right?" Austin asked to reassure himself. "I'm curious as to how your fighting style really works, and it would be advantageous for me to learn about it; in case we end up running into others like you when we fight the war against Rhys..." He paused, clearing his throat.

"I, Austin of Idlewood" The soldier began, to assure Red knew his name. "accept your challenge. It'll be relaxing to fight for sport after yesterday's carnage.." He finished taking stance.

Red
THE AEGIS
A challenger approached, and Red slowed his hands to stare the man down as he came, a small smirk already present on his face. He had seen him before, raining blows on the training dummy. His strikes were strong, but anyone could hit a dummy. How well could he control that sword when his target was moving? The pugilist bumped his fists together idly; he had left his gauntlets in his room, along with his armor. Red was wearing a simple sleeveless shirt and pants. His next opponent was shirtless, but he had no armor apart from a wooden shield. Even the weapon he wielded was wooden. When the man approached and spoke, the only reply he got was an affirmative nod. What he said next though elicited a response from Red.

"You will find no other like me. Not in this war." Austin of Idlewood, as he called himself, declared his intentions to spar and took a fighting stance. Red smirked. "Very well." Fingers already curling into fists, two hands rose to cover his face. Already, his heart rate was quickening. Spar or not, the islander was going to give it his all. That was all he knew. With only his bare hands, he couldn't do too much damage to his opponent... At least, I'll try not to. "Prepare yourself!"

The short sentence still lingered in the air as Red exploded into action, closing the gap between William and himself in an instant. Like anyone would do in that situation, William took a step back, his shield raised before him. As his weight shifted from one foot to the other Red unleashed a quick flurry of punches, then stepped back to avoid a response whether one came or not. First, he wanted to test his foe's defenses. When that was established, the fist fighter could start to plan his attack. Leaning forward, Red shot out a quick pair of jabs with his left, but his eyes never left William's sword.

Just as the martial-artist had predicted, Austin planted his feet to ready himself for the incoming assault. He was a shield-man, it was the only natural motion to make. With his body protected by a solid wall of wood there wasn't much of a way to land a hit on the soldier unless flanked--especially in such close range. Leg sweeps could be tried, but one would be a fool to try.

Mentally, Austin laughed. He didn't even bother to wrap his knuckles! Respectable, but I wonder if that will change anything for him? Once Red stepped back, he'd see his opponent hadn't staggered an inch. But, that was to be expected with light punched. It's not like he was trying to be powerful with them and the veteran would be a fool to underestimate his sparring-partner even if he didn't understand why he fought the way he did.

As the fighter leaned in, the shirtless knight drew back his blade and glanced forward with his shield--lightly so as to not cause any real harm such as broken bones--if Red planned to move in on the opening, he'd that the sword was ready to deflect the next attack.

((I need help thinking of ideas! I want to come up with something where the players' responses will be more than just...well, responses. I need something where it will serve not as a game piece on a board making one move and then waiting for the players to move in return, it needs to be something that will spur the players on to their own actions. PMs, please, anyone who has ideas!))

THE AEGIS
As soon as Austin moved his shield away from his body, Red saw his opening. His eyes darted up to the warrior's blade, drawn back, out of the way. He was completely exposed. Spinning quickly and ducking low, the pugilist moved to the inside of Austin's shield strike, his right hand darting out to strike the wrist of his foe's sword arm--effectively halting any momentum the man of Idlewood may have been trying to build. After jarring his opponent Red pulled his arm back hard, maintaining the momentum from his spin to drive an elbow towards Austin's ribs. In the same smooth motion, the fist fighter's left fist came whipping around, all the force of his complete rotation behind it. Repositioned as he was, his punch would be aimed at Austin's side/ lower back area, around the kidney.

Whether the combo did or didn't connect, Red would step out of Austin's striking range immediately and wait for another opening.

I don't get it, why would anyone in their right mind move so close to a person defending himself? Austin thought to himself as his sword came crashing down to smash Red in the shoulders. The intent became clear, the fist-fighter's fist met his wrist which threw the attack off balance--rendering it useless. Quickly recovering, the veteran shot both of his arms behind him for leverage and brought one knee up to crash into the boy. This would do either one of two things; It would either negate the elbow strike or slam into Red and cause the first hit of the match. Either way, it WOULD cause the martial-artist to stagger enough to the point where Austin could collect his bearings.

Red strafed around to his side and Austin twirled the opposite direction and backpedaled; shield raised. Now the boy waited for the soldier to attack so he did. He crept forward with his shield still ready to block the next assault. His sword came above his shoulders as he closed the distance--opening his defense up ever so slightly to let down a quick, powerful vertical slice.

Red
THE AEGIS
When Red saw Austin's counter coming in the midst of his combo, he moved his torso just far enough away to make both attacks glancing blows. Neither of the fighters would take any noticeable damage from the exchange. By not connecting with his elbow however, Red was able to build more momentum. His follow-up hook to Austin's lower back connected with maximum power, the telltale sound of of a solid punch ringing in both combatant's ears.

Quickly darting back, the islander raised his fists as the veteran started to advance. He held his shield out before him defensively, then initiated with a vicious vertical strike. Instead of backing away or trying to block however, Red side-stepped, moving past Austin as his blade sliced thin air. While he was still over-extended from his attack, Red threw a punch at his side, near the same spot he had hit only seconds before. It was unlikely the blow could be avoided, and before the soldier even had time to contemplate some sort of counter attack, his foe had moved out of striking range again, lightly bouncing on the balls of his feet as he stared down Austin of Idlewood, a silent challenge burning in his eyes.

Taking a deep breath, Red suddenly burst forward, Right leg leading, torso twisting the opposite direction as the pugilist drew his fist back. Planting his foot, the martial artist leaned forward, hips twisting as his left fist shot out like a cannon, flying right towards Austin's face--

Then nothing.

Without warning, three punches came towards the small of Austin's back. By feinting a punch at Austin's face, Red hoped to break his opponent's line of sight, most likely when the man instinctively raised his shield to protect his face. This brief distraction would provide enough time for Red to reposition himself, and hopefully land a trio of quick blows before rushing out of Austin's striking range once more.

Bullshitting your way to Victory!

. . . . . .

Austin, who also had the ability to make .000001 second reactions evaded every attack Red made, and decided to auto-hit his opponent in the head at full force; Instantly killing the fist fighter. So fast and vicious, that not even he could avoid it or be allowed to react whatsoever. Because the veteran was so blindingly fast and had the power of belief in himself, nothing could stop him! He really was becoming just like Red--who was the best fighter around because he believed in the power of Bushido!

((Well, I clearly stated in my post that there was an elbow strike and a follow up punch. You chose not to acknowledge the second part of the attack, only focusing on the elbow. I don't think it's that implausible to think that someone just lean back a little. Both of the attacks missed, and it was a fair exchange. You never even mentioned that Austin SAW the punch, so I assumed that meant it hit. But if you're gonna quit that's fine. Totally your decision.))
