A Sample RP to see how well we work together; A fairly simple, if heart felt, RP to test the waters

An idea for a simple, unifying Sample RP:
A World Divided: A simple if heart felt high fantasy RP based around the idea that a group of adventurers, created by the RPers, finding themselves joined together in a desperate struggle to stop the destruction of their world. Taken from every walk of life, this rag tag group has been bound by fate to their shared destiny to save this divided land from ruin. By working together, weathering the storm of their own personal conflicts and the dangers of their journey can they help avoid the destruction of their homeland at the hands of an unnatural force known as the Interlopers. These otherworldly beings exist beyond the veil of this world and seek to envelope it into their own. Only by uniting the various nations of this world (each ideally created or inspired by each site interested in joining this RP) against these fiendish invaders and collecting 8 artifacts of power, known as the “keystones” can the world be saved. When brought together, these “gemstones” can be used at the birthplace of creation to once again seal the veil shut and banish the Interlopers and their monsters from our land by once again unifying the severed mural and reestablishing balance across the realm. Should the party fail in their god given task, this world will fall to the hands of these corrupting beings and the world shall wallow in despair, forever losing any chance at a brighter future.

Overall Information:
My overall theme for this RP revolves around the concept of ‘mirroring reality.’ The basic idea is that our current situations with multiple communities and individuals having to come together in order to successfully survive a coming crisis is the heart of the story. Basically the plot revolves around the concept that there are a number of nations making up the world, which are based on each of the communities that are interested in joining in this merged site. The party is “chosen” to unify the world one way or another before the looming threat of the demonic Interlopers invades the world and destroy it. The party is required to locate 4 of these keystones which are deeply tied to these nations as national treasures and probably the very cornerstone of their country. Meanwhile the other four artifacts have been lost to history or are not in the hands of the nations. But they are conveniently held either by the various antagonists (which are either interested in their own goals OR aiding the Interlopers), in formerly desolate lands long lost to the powers that be or in a location that cannot be accessed without the aid of the nation’s themselves. The party would be required not only to ‘get’ these plot tokens, but perhaps also tasked with the responsibility of trying to build an alliance between each nation in order to ensure the survival of the world should the “dark horde” descend upon them before they can successfully collect all the artifacts and make use of the ritual(s) needed to ensure the world’s protection; thus leading to the option for extra padding if this is a successful RP. If we used a 3 Act system: building the ‘party’, finding out about the Interlopers coming and learning their fates is Act1, Act2 is going to involve collecting half of the artifacts (one way or another) with the horde finally appearing in the world at the end of it, final in Act3 is the “action packed” part of it where the party has to find the last set of the artifacts while whatever amount of the ‘unified world’ joins together as a single army to hold it back in a desperate struggle to survive with the story ending with the great ‘ritual’ which banishes the horde entirely and leaves the various nations unified.

The “For Sure” Details:
1. The races will be restricted to Tolkien/DnD races. Additional races would have to be talked about, although unless it is particularly difficult to tie into the plot then it shouldn’t be too much of a problem to incorporate.
2. The magic system will be 'simple' relying more on narrative needs rather than any numbers or abstract values such as 'energy.' Instead, perhaps we could just use a basic term like “abilities” and leave it at that? Likely each character will start with 4-6 named abilities, gaining additional ones based on the demands of the plot along with any items that might be deemed necessary. Magic, special physical abilities and powerful items (like say potions that could restore health or something) could all be applied to these “abilities” could work out. Thus in the world at large magic, above human feats, rare items with impressive effects could ALL be found in the world without any real issue. However “items or accessories” couldn’t be deemed overpowered since they would be treated essentially like any other ability, which could be gained at any time anyways.
3. The story itself falls on the idealistic side of the scale and the conflict itself will likely be White (heroes) versus Black (villains) with the NPC population mostly being interested in their own survival and co-operation, sorta like how WE are right now.
4. The narrative will be mostly focused on the “party”, since the main focus of the RP is actually HOW WELL we can interact together in mass. That doesn’t necessarily mean that all characters will always be together, but will interact enough to see how things mesh.
5. The various storylines and plot will likely be made independently by the RPers involved. This will function as a sandbox RP with a central storyline (collect the artifacts, stop the horde) that is scaffolded by the storylines created by everyone involved. Thus anyone interested in running a certain part of the RP, such as creating a side story involving their character OR controlling the quest to locate one of the artifacts.

What is Still up in the Air:
1.As of right now, an actual setting hasn’t been decided. One of the easiest to do would be the Classical “swords and sorcery” styled setting that can be comparable to the 10th-14th century Europe. An example using Final Fantasy might be FF1,2,4,5 etc. Another option could be Basic MagiTech sort of a world, with a good deal of magically powered science such as airships, semi modern guns (that fire magic, making it easier to justify survivability), energy sources more akin to scifi than swords and sorcery could provide with an example such as FF9, 10, 12. Heck even Advanced MagiTech where technology is semi similar to that of the modern day, with a certain amount of magic still being present such as those seen in FF13 and FF7. In the end it is all basically a choice of what is easiest for the various communities to do. I am personally a fan of Basic MagiTech for this since it allows the full gambit between a backwater “swords and sorcery” area and the more advanced ones.
2. The administration of this RP. Ideally we could have it where the various members of each community could each take a ‘turn’ running it, maybe splitting up the artifacts and the quests associated with getting them and have each individual choose to handle the stuff that leads up to attaining it as a way to effectively see how everyone manages things for later on along with one to three individuals who have the overall ‘power’ to take over a storyline whenever is needed for productivity’s sake.
3. The world at large such as the town(s) and NPCs. However I did have a rather… unique idea about that. As it stands, there are a certain number of nations in this world. Perhaps we could have it where each of the sites interested in joining this RP (and the merger that might follow it) could create a nation and a central ‘town’ that the party could explore? These countries could be based on our “sites” themselves and perhaps the NPCs there might be inspired into the various members as well? While not necessarily required, I just thought that it might be an interesting idea and a very good way to help populate the world at large, along with making it significantly easier to have a more sandbox feeling RP.

An example of what this “inspired” nation might be:
Spoiler: click to toggle

So feedback time, I suppose. Please tell me your ideas about the four areas that are still "Up in the Air" along with any thoughts about the story itself, the artifacts of power, the ritual, the Interlopers or anything else that might be worth acknowledging to make this better? Also if absolutely anyone would be interested in admining part of this RP, creating the various quests or anything else that might be worth while I would love to hear it. In particular quests that might be taking place in the region, towns etc created by the Espada of Alexandria members. Lastly any thoughts about this as our Sample RP to see exactly how well our two (or more) communities work together.

Right now, I have a question. For those that are unfamiliar to the Tolkien/D&D races, will there be some sort of guide for those people on the various races?

I have a DnD character builder so I can post links to the races.
Arch-Necromancer of the Gilgamesh Army- “I am who I am. The pain of others, I do not feel. The sorrow of others does not touch me. Death feeds me. Death pleases me. I am the essence I consume. You fools will become corpses here, because I wish it to be.”

Curse: Cursed with hourglass eyes that show how life slowly dies before him
Wields: Living sword Ragnarok and the Staff of Magius
Signature move: God's End
Overlimit: Ultimate Spellchain(Flare, Holy, Meteor, Grand Cross, Almagest, Dimension Zero, Big Bang)
Transformation: Turns into a great black dragon

@Magnius: That would be wonderful.

@Ygg: Basically those are the 'standard fantasy races' like humans, elves, dwarves, orcs etc. You know, the ones that you always see in fantasy settings that don't limit what species of playable characters can make an appearance.

Base races only or can we go monsters as PCs? I personally already know that I'm going to make a half-orc so it doesn't matter for me really. And I could probably just post a url that holds info on all the base races in pathfinder. Hell, I'll just do it

It might be easiest just to allow the basic playable races, although if someone really wanted to be a playable monster race we could probably pull it off easily enough. Other than that, it seems like we are pretty well set on the races and what they mean thanks to those two links being provided. Now I would love to hear some feedback about the other aspects of this sample RP. In particular the tech level of the world as specified as 'dark ages for Europe', 'basic magitech mimicing early industrial age', 'advanced magitech mimicing semi modern', 'modern through magic' etc. Also how you all feel about creating your own nation (potentially based on your site, should that idea spark interest in you as it did with my site) along with an object of power and the quest associated with attaining it. Finally I'd love to know how you guys felt about the idea of having one of your members admining the quest(s) taking place within your own site generated nation.

My response...

1) Would it be possible if we could intro medieval Asian technology as well? From the Middle East, to India, to China for example?

2) Wait, so this entire site would count as one nation while TLS would be another? Wouldn't it be easier if we created different nations, via different forums aligned to this roleplay? I would suggest that we create a section for the test roleplay and then we create multiple forums for each nation. How does that sound?

3) I think it might be better if all the members can admin quests, but of course, people would govern their own quests, which makes sense.

1. Honestly, whatever is fine with me. Looking at it using this 'divided' nation idea, it would make sense for each nation to have different cultures and technologies. I'll go out on a limb here and say that chances are those from LS would probably stick with more western technology and the like but if you would rather go with a more eastern approach that's fine as well.

2. Well I guess the main issue is how we want to experience the RP together. To me the story is focused on more the central party and their exploits rather than the locations that they take place in. Making it where the topic(s) themselves wouldn't be based on locations only but by the events of the story. So it would make sense that even if the party starting in... lets say the forest, moved to an ocean city and then ended up at a volcano within 1,000 posts that it wouldn't mean we needed to have 3 topics going on, just a single one following their exploits. But if you guys want to split it up into a LS nation and EoA nation topic and then divide it up into sections per 'district' or something and have the party bebop back and forth between them that is fine too. We've done both ways of RPing and it doesn't make that big of a difference. But my reason for suggesting a singular topic as superior for this RP is two fold: 1 it makes it where until the party arrives somewhere that nothing beyond a single paragraph really needs to be written up, easing the stress on all involved and 2 to ensure that the party remains together as much as possible so everyone gets a chance to interact together to see who works well with who.

3. In an ideal world, letting all the members admin the quests as they see fit would be amazing and something to aspire to. However from my experience, when the responsibility is spread over a large number of people they become less willing to take it upon themselves to see something done. But if that is different in your community, I would happily try it your way. After all, this is just an attempt to see if we can RP together and that means compromise. So I'll leave the matter of administration up to you guys, if you would like.

Summarizing:

Hmm, so basically, you guys gotta figure out what kind of time period this RP is gonna take place, which forum the RP will take place first and order, as well as towns and NPCs.

Races are limited to the common human, (pedo XD)orc, elves, hell, maybe even fairies? >.>

My only question is how many people are participating; if there's too many, it might get cluttered and take too long; too little, and it gets kinda boring, am I right?

But that's just my opinion. XD Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

But all in all, your description of the RP is detailed and simple enough for new and veteran RPers, I guess. =P

First let me throw my idea out there for how we do tech. Steampunk with magic essentially being gone except for the art of alchemy. Alchemy can be used for potions and poisons as per normal but, one can also make a special potion that when ingested or injected, gives them an ability of some sort. This way magic is something that must be learned and once the recipe is learned, one must earn the right to use it, which by the time they do, all the others should be caught up training wise with weapons and such and be on par. We probably could also try introducing an Engineer class who operates on Homebrew content made by the user with materials they naturally come across in the rp. I think that would be fun for most people as they would then get to explore their imagination when put into a steampunk setting.

And to answer some of your questions Flor:

Races are essentially limited to what you believe you can rp since we gave you two sites as supplemental content for races. If you think you can rp an ifrit, I say go nuts. Although I will probably assume people are going to stick to the basic dwarf, elf, human setup since it is familiar and easy to use.

Length of rp would probably be more determined by number of quests, not number of people in the party I would assume. Although large parties do make going from event to even sometimes drawn out because everyone wants to put in their own input to the story, I'm sure we'll be fine. Another thing that we may want to watch out for is if we have a large number of rp'ers and the plot is sandbox, we need to be wary of people essentially making it their story with a bunch of followers doing diddily squat.

I'm pretty sure everyone wants to play it, NTNP. The nations being based on the sites sounds good, not only because it helps reinforce the idea that we want to encourage unity but because it's right away given us some introspect as to the state of each country. The folks here at Espada and from the other sites should probably design their own nations' ideas and send them to you or propose them at that council cbox or whatever, and we'll do the same on LS.

For folks who want more than just three countries to explore, why not open the map canvas to everybody who wants to create something, and just have these other countries be subordinate or allied to any of the main three? For instance, if I wanted to make my own country, I could just say that it's a smaller nation that relies on the larger LS nation to help defend it in exchange for lowered prices on their trading goods, sort of the way that smaller countries relied on larger allies pre-WWI.

As for time periods or the state of magic or tech or whatever, I say just let each nation or even each city decide on its own levels of that depending on the resources it has available. Some place that lies in a mountainous region has a lot more metal, and if that mountain is volcanic or has hot springs they also have a source of inspiration from which to draw ideas for steam powered stuff, which then leads to lots of machinery using that basis. Meanwhile a place that lies more in a forest would be more like your typical little hamlet, where boys play at knighthood with wooden swords and the adults work all day to bring in the harvest by hand.

I think the link between the Artifacts and the Interlopers should be expanded a bit, mostly to answer the question of why the Artifacts exist and why gathering them together allows us to banish the Interlopers.

Also if you need any monster designs for the Interlopers I'm sure I could help.

Green and Onime; As always your support is appreciated as is your ideas and clarifying paragraphs.

Onime: Hmm, honestly if allowed I'd probably pull the whole "gateway to another dimension" and "out of place artifact" business making the items essentially things that belong in the Interloper world but were placed there in the ancient past by precursors to the Interlopers. And now the newest age of Interloper has chosen to impact the world in a very direct way (aka integration) and those items are the only thing possible to either fully open the gateway resulting in full fusion of the worlds OR to seal it away entirely. However ideally a certain balance could be attained too, like if the majority is held (7-6:1-2 or something) that the other pieces can be summoned to the holder of the larger amount or that the remaining pieces are drawn to the final dungeon, resulting in the choice to either open the flood gates or eternally bar the doors. Monster wise, I'd love the help. We both know how my beasties turn out and it would be nice to have some creativity here.

Those who haven't chimed in especially members of EoA: What about you guys? Do you want to set up a town(s) of your own and do everything like that? Yes? No? I don't want involved get the hell off my site? Anyone? I guess its that time, we either give it a shot or call it a day with this idea. What do you guys wanna do?
