Garm, I like that idea, basing a character of certain music. That's really interesting. |

This is a random idea that I've been playing around with for awhile now. Basically it is a swordmage with specialty in shadow/dark magic with a strange sword and a mechanic that lets him walk through a shadow dimension/nether of sorts. The idea came about when I was listening to a Blind Guardian song called Straight Through the Mirror and I honestly don't know why this song gave me the idea except maybe it was the concept that going through a mirror enters one into another world with the proper magic. All of this was also while I was playing a game of Magic 2013 with a mono-black deck and came across the card "Doom Blade" with the flavor text of "The void is without substance but it cuts like steel". This got me thinking what a sword made of "nothing" would look like and how would its mechanics work alongside other mundane equipment. It was a little bit ago when I came up with that it is a definite amount of 'void' and the more compact the blade gets, the more potent it is but it also cuts its range. I figured that a scale of Greatsword being pretty much a blunt club to a short sword being sharp enough to cut steel would be good, but then I asked myself "What if it were to be a dagger?" And I came up with the idea that the dagger shape would be sharp enough that if the user were to provide enough magical force, it could create a temporary dimensional door through means of essentially ripping a hole in reality. After the establishment of the weapon and the mirrored reality, I began thinking of what kind of magic would he use, what is his opinion of it, and what is in this new reality. The magic I decided pretty quickly would be inspired off of the Dark Magic in Dark Souls although one addition I also was/am considering was perhaps add an insanity effect to it. This ties into the next question I asked as I was wondering if the magic does make the character insane, would it be the insanity of being terrified by it, or would he go mad for power and slowly be corrupted by it? Both could probably work at the same time now that I think about it however. The character could begin scared at first of this new and strange world as he doesn't understand any of it and isn't aware of its true potential. As he gets more powerful however, he begins to want more and more and perhaps begins to split from the party more and more or at least show darker/eviler tendencies. The new reality also got me thinking of a few possibilities such as how does one enter it and what is on the other side. First I thought of the possibility of maybe having a shadowmeld like ability where I enter the realm through shadows and exit where shadows are as well. I also thought of maybe mirrors being a portal to the world if it is large enough to fit a person. The third thing I thought of was the dagger idea I mentioned earlier. On the other side I considered a few ideas but the first thing I was sure of was that movement would be proportional. For what things looked like I've had a few ideas. First I thought maybe everything would be just pure blackness like the Abyss. Another was it could be like in Lord of the Rings when Frodo puts on the Ring although I think what I'll do is a combination of those two ideas. The character will see basically a rough outline of the world around him in a deep black. I figured for awhile people would look the same way as the rest of the world, but then I had the idea of maybe having them show up like the Anti-Spirals of TTGL. Other things I considered is if there should be cthuloid horrors in this world and the state of what the character looks like to others in the normal world if he even shows up at all. Lastly I thought of miscellaneous things like what other things he would carry, how he would look, how he would act, and how he interacts with others. One thing I recently began thinking of is that even though it is possible to make this person stealth based, it equally could be said that he doesn't have to be stealth based and could just use dark magic in the sense of high damage, not being stealthy. Another thing I thought of is that should this guy use a shield. Pretty quickly I said no to having a physical shield, and then soon after I also got rid of the idea of having a magical shield of some sort. Name wise I've already decided his name will be Dorian. Why? Mostly because I just like the name and because recently I heard of the story called "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and I thought it was a good Faustian tale. Pretty much everything else about this character for now is still up in the air. I actually really like this concept so far and given how much random thought I put into it, I may some day make the character for an RP. Who knows though, only time can tell I guess, but I'm pretty hopeful :D |

Wouldn't being able to cut through reality from the start make the character over powered? I mean sure it's an interesting idea, but how would it work in an RP? |

Yeah, I thought of that too because at one point I was considering that the dagger would be an entire side weapon that he would get later but then I thought that wouldn't work. The thing I think I came up with is that the way he normally gets in to the new world is he finds a working "gate" and provides enough (I'm thinking a little to a medium amount) of magic to jump through and then he exits for free or just a little. I think what I came up with for the dagger is much more magic intensive thus for battles it isn't really ideal early on. First he would have to compress his blade down to the dagger size which I think I'll make holding shape of the blade more of a channeled effect and make it so it stacks. So for example if going from Greatsword to longsword it would be 1, longsword to short would be 2 + the 1 from the previous transformation, shortsword would be 3+3 (its own plus all previous) and then dagger would be 8 total. Not only that but using the dagger then to make its own gate would also require an amount of magic to be used (say about 2 used to normally make a jump). And that's how I think I'll solve the problem early on, in theory he could do it early, but he would have to do it quick or risk loosing all of his mana and/or being tired/exhausted for an amount of time. Another idea I had for this character right now is maybe he finds the sword he uses later in this other dimension a little bit into the rp. So early on he would just have say a longsword and he would just enchant it with darkness and use his attacks as normal. However, I think I'll make a slight penalty to this in that whenever he uses his magic with/on it, it causes the blade to become eroded so eventually he will have to get a replacement or else he would have to go around weapon-less and if he wants to cast magic he would have to use his hand, which is most likely a bad idea considering the magic is able to corrode steel. I think it would create a decent effect of when to use magic and when not to as it has the possibility of breaking my weapon thus forcing him to hurt himself in order to combat a threat. It also as a side-effect solves the problem of making early reality rips. Later then when he does get the sword from the other world (which I really should come up with a specific name for) I think at that point he will still be in the part were he fears his own abilities, but soon after he would start to crave their power and start to seek to strengthen himself. The only thing left for me think about now really is just an end to the character arc which is slightly troubling me right now as I can't think of anything but I do have plenty of time I guess so no need to rush. |
