Alek was completely stationary as she spoke. It was by sheer instinct that when she turned to face him, he took a step back. Whereas before he'd been close enough to just barely reach out and touch her elbow, now there was at least 10 feet between them.

Irrational. The word kept cropping up in Alek's mind as it struggled to absorb and decipher the new information. He was being irrational in that all he wanted to do was get away. She hadn't done anything to hurt him and she hadn't just morphed into some kind of ruthless killer. If anything, she'd protected him for being mauled or worse.

And yet, irrationality still won over him. He felt a very old fear settling in the pit of his stomach; a fear cemented into his being from the tender age of 4. The fear of magic and of those who wielded it.

"Princess... I think i-it would be best to make our way back to the castle. You've a long day ahead of you tomorrow," he finally said, his voice even quieter than usual.

Millicent nodded, slipping her gloves back on as she ran a hand through Kisha's fur. The distance between them not lost on her, nor the look of concern and almost fear that flitted across his face. Honestly it killed her a little bit inside.

The wolf whined, trying to block her path. She let out a choked laugh, squatting and pressing a kiss into her fur. "I'll be back. Promise, girl." She murmured, trying her damn hardest not to cry. She wanted to remain at least a little of her dignity.

She stood back up and avoided his gaze as she recollected her things, hugging the book of runes closer to her chest. She did pause, though, and looked to him before she walked over. "I know I have no right to ask this of you. That your mind is already probably made up. But...please. Please keep this to yourself. It is all I ask of you." She said softly, looking down at the ground. She knew the king would use it simply as a sure-fire excuse to see her head on a pike. He had never been one to hide his displeasure with his step-daughter. Alek always listened to him over her anyway and she summarized he'd been raised the same way most of those in the kindom had.

To fear magic.

That magic was evil.

That magic needed to be destroyed.

Alek didn't respond to her request, which in all likelihood was probably better news for her than what she may have been expecting. As she began to walk back toward the city, Alek took up his spot behind her, though there was more than two steps between them now. Not quite ten, he didn't want to draw attention as it was his duty still to protect her, but certainly not two.

Millicent felt the silence and increased distance as a heavy weight on her but she refused to let it show too much. She didn't have any friends to speak of, no one would miss her. Well Kida...maybe Leila. She'd thought Alek may have but now, instead of feeling relaxed after her walk, she felt even more anxious and tired about everything that transpired.

She looked up to the setting sun, sighing when she realized she'd probably get scolded by Leila. She wouldn't be late...but not overly so. Just enough to make it a mad dash to get ready for dinner.

Dinner.

Maybe she'd just pretend to be ill. Last thing she wanted was to be in the forced presence of a pompous prince. Or her step-father. She felt the tears sting her eyes again but blinked them away stubbornly. No.

Soon enough the castle came into view and she could faintly see not only Leila but who looked like the captain of the guard waiting and her pace slowed considerably. Maybe...maybe if she just took off now. Dropped everything and ran....

Alek would recognize his father's rigid posture a mile away, so when they made the ascent onto castle grounds, he realized how late it had gotten.

Captain Markus Camilleri was a strong presence. He didn't wear the full regalia of the guard as often as his lower ranking men did, but today, he was dressed to the nines in full armor, a full cloak, and his commendations. Apparently the foreign diplomats had arrived. There were bound to be more than usual due to the Princess's birthday celebration tomorrow evening.

"My Lady Princess," the Captain acknowledge the royal lady first, bowing, one arm to his stomach, the other folded behind his back. "Your lady was getting concerned for your welfare and found it in your best interest to alert me to your missing status. It eases all our hearts to see you safe." Markus was not an unkind man and the respect with which he spoke to Millicent wasn't trained into him, but honest. "Princess, I requested long ago that you take a full unit when you leave castle grounds. It is for your own safety." His dark eyes, darker than his son's, flickered to Alek disapprovingly before resting back on Millicent.

"Well... it sounds like you have such a good pl-" Asta was cut off as Aleron came dashing out of nowhere and nearly collided with Randon, his large warhorse right behind him.

Asta blinked as she stared at her cousin who was looking a bit wild eyed. "Asta! There you are. Thank the Spirits I caught you before anything bad happened." He leaned over to take a huge gulping breathe as Asta wanted to facepalm. Well, so much for her secrecy.

"Aleron I'm fine. I was just sitting here and talking to Randon." She told him and that straightened him up pretty fast. Asta NEVER talked to people. Especially men. Turning to the man he nearly ran over, his eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?" He asked, obviously protective as Asta rolled her eyes.

"Are you deaf as well as blind brother?" She asked before sighing. "Aleron this is Randon. Randon, my brother Aleron." She introduced them.

Millicent blinked as the captain spoke to her, taking a moment to take a breath and steady herself. "It is fine, m'lord." She said in her normal quiet voice, "The pathways need to be cut back more so we had to take a different, longer route to get out." She assured him with a small smile, "And I assure you Alek is all the guard watch I need. I really don't like making a scene in town." She added, biting her lip as Lelia gestured for her to hurry along.

"I'm so sorry but I really must get going." She gave a quick curtsy and turned to leave but she paused, looking back to Alek briefly.

"M'lady I must insist we hurry..."

Without a word she handed her book of runes over to Leila and pulled the smaller of the two book parcels from her bag. Taking a chance she walked back over, pressing the parcel into Alek's hands with a small smile, even though her eyes were still clearly afraid. "A small thank you, m'lord, for saving me from the wolf earlier." She said simply, lying smoothly as she ignored Leila's gasp.

"A wolf?! M'lady..." She started, looking up as the bell tolled, "Oh bloody hell. Come on now, Princess." Millicent backed away finally before hurrying into the castle after her lady-in-waiting. Now, she supposed, it was just a waiting game.

Randon stumbled back as another horse suddenly appeared, nearly knocking him on his hind. He quirked an eyebrow at the new name before chuckling. "Asta huh? Eh, seems te fit ye better lass. Didn't really seem like an Anna. Too accident prone." He winked, looking up to Aleron then, "So ye the infamous brother that left this lass to cause havoc in the square. Pleasure. Was just tellin' the lass this ain't a place ye want to stay..." He explained with a simply shrug, adjusting his hat a little bit so he could see the brother better.

Alek stood silently, not minding his father's gaze. He very rarely did anything right, though he supposed it would be a week of overnights for this. Usually the punishments went through one of the lower ranking officers, but since the Captain had been brought in...

He looked down at the package as Millicent put it in his hands. Again, his natural reaction was to back away, but this time he stifled it. He simply took the package, bringing his eyes up just long enough to meet her gaze. His was still conflicted. He watched her hurry away with her lady.

"...I suppose you find this empowering to some degree, Aleksandr." His father was the only one who called him by his full name.

Alek looked down at the parcel and then to his father. "Not particularly, no. I was just doing as I was instructed by my superiors."

Markus raised an eyebrow. "It's for your own safety as well, Aleksandr. Being seen running off with the princess, by yourself, alone, into the forest for several hours, does not bode well for appearances. Men will talk and the rumors of the princess's honor will spread like wildfire. I've lectured you on this before and still you do as you please." He sighed, running a hand through his coiffed salt-and-pepper hair. "You'll rest tonight and tomorrow eve, you'll begin your new overnight assignment, which you'll remain on until further notice. Also, I am removing you from your castle post, Guardsman Camilleri and repositioning you at the Front Gates."

Alek stared at his father, all that had happened briefly pushed aside. "For what? We walk, Father, she requests me--"

"I don't care. Henceforth, all personal guard requests will filter through myself and Second Captain Marek. Yours will no longer be fulfilled." Markus overlooked his son, seeing the rare flash of anger in his brown eyes. "You'll be attending the gala tomorrow eve as I've already scheduled you. Shine your armor and launder your formal cloak. Have it done by the castle launderer. I don't want to see a single wrinkle. Also... when on duty, Guardsman, I am Captain Camilleri. After three years, I should think you would remember that." He passed his son, placing a brief hand on his shoulder as he returned to his former duties.

Asta blushed as Randon commented on her name, squirming in the spot she was standing. "I had good reasons." She merely told him as Aleron raised his eyebrow as he looked over at her. While he felt bad for ruining her ruse, he had to admit that she was acting weird. Normally when men talked to her, she either ignored them, played vacant mistress, or laid the nine hells into them. Did... did Asta like this guy? The concept was simply too foreign and out there for him to accept.

"I had to get provisions squared away and thought she would go straight to the inn." He admitted before nodding. "I heard the exact same thing, that's why I ran here. I supposed I should thank you for making sure nothing happened to her." He said as Asta frowned.

"I would have been fine." She muttered as Aleron simply raised an eyebrow as he looked over at her causing her to blush.
