Millicent looked up with a small smile, "Just a journal. Been in need of a new one anyway..." She answered in her soft voice, adding it to her slowly growing pile. She picked one up, glancing briefly to Alek, before deciding it was worth a shot. She nodded her head to the desk, smiling at the young woman behind the counter. "Alfred says there is one back there for me?" She mused as she set down her pile, blinking as the shop owner in question hurried over.

"Yes, yes it is right here, m'lady." He assures her with a smile, setting the old book on the counter so she could look through it.

She ran a gloved hand over it with a smile and a nod, flipping through a few of the pages and quickly checking to make sure the binding and spine were still secure. "Lovely, as always, Alfred." She assured him, waiting for the total then. She gave a slight frown at the number, "Alfred...you won't keep the roof over your head if you keep this up."

"M'lady you're by far my best customer. Save maybe your companion." He assured her and Millicent's smile morphed briefly into a rare smirk. She knew Alek was lying about not reading. "Least I can do is give a fair price."

"It is much too fair a price, m'lord." She insisted, pressing three gold coins into his stubborn hands. More than what he'd told her by mounds.

"M'lady..." He floundered, giving a sheepish smile as she refused to take it back.

"Take your family somewhere nice for dinner with the difference. I know those boys give you a run." Millicent smiled as he bowed, thanking her profusely as he packed up her order expertly. Alfred had been supplying her reading addiction since she could remember. It was the least she could do.

Alek, half paying attention to the conversation, half watching the situation outside, mentally groaned at the admission of his frequency here. He exhaled lightly, eyes shutting momentarily. Gods around them.

He recovered instantly, pushing away his personal issues to maintain composure. He'd deliberately been avoiding eye contact with the personnel here, hoping they'd get the hint he hadn't wanted to be recognized. Apparently that was far too much to ask for.

"Ready, my Lady," Alek asked camly, straightening up as her books were packed away. "If so, I'll need to go outside first and clear the walkway."

Randon chuckled lightly, seeing the flicker of recognition in her eyes as she set eyes on the inn. “I think here is close enough.” He assured her as he came to a stop, “He’ll be able to spot you here. Do you know how long he planned to run errands? If ye need something to pass the time the stall across the way sells delicious food.” He supplied with a small shrug, sticking to his word and sticking by her. He knew the moment he left part of that unsavory group would wander over and cause havoc.

Millicent nodded, smiling as she slipped the two parcels into her satchel and held the old text to her chest. “Yes, I’m ready.” She said simply, pulling her hood back up even though it was useless at this point. She felt the heat raising in her cheeks as she finally gaze to the window. Oh bloody hell…maybe she didn’t really need those riding chaps at the moment. “Umm…” She looked to Alfred hopefully, smiling in relief as he chuckled and led them out the back. “It’s easier. I think I’m done shopping for the day.” She told Alek, obviously flustered by the crowd. She gave Alfred a smile in thanks before leading Alek out. He’d notice the entrance to the forest path wasn’t far off.

It was silent for a moment before she spoke again, “Why did you feel the need to lie to me earlier?” She asked him simply, looking over her shoulder because he refused to walk beside her. Even if it was just the two of them.

Alek was grateful for the back exit -- it made things a bit easier than he expected. He didn't particularly want to have to usher her through a crowd that was insistent on getting her attention.

Two steps behind as always, he didn't look at her as he answered. "I didn't lie to you, my Lady. I told you that my father and brother disapproved of reading as a past time, not that I didn't enjoy it." His hand was securely on the hilt of his sword again as he increased their speed to get away from the hubub of the city. "It was an omission of an answer, not a lie."

Millicent resisted rolling her eyes, "Still would've been easier just to say yes." She pointed out with a small shrug. She'd been trying to get things out of him since he'd begun joining her on her outings. He always gave her roundabout answers though and Kida had a point in that she didn't think she'd ever seen him actually smile. It was irritating and yet she still requested him each time. It made no logical sense.

Her body relaxed a little as they entered the cool shade of the forest, mentally noting the fact the paths needed to be cut back once more. She let the hood slip down once more, fixing her hair with a light sigh of contentment. It was the only place she was really ever close to relaxed.

Away from the city, from the people, Alek too allowed himself to relax. The tension of his body ebbed and he was no longer gripping his hilt, his fingers now loose on the pommel instead.

"Maybe," he concluded, still careful to remain noncomittal in his conversations with her. He watched as her hood slippd back down, the afternoon sun streaming down from the forest canopy to illuminate the colors of her hair.

He occasionally grabbed an overgrown branch and snapped it away from the path. It wasn't prudent of him to ask questions of the princess and this one was particularly personal, but he decided to attempt it anyhow.

"What do you write about in your journals, Princess?"

Millicent paused, not because of the question but because he actually asked her something. She looked over her shoulder with a small smile, and a light shrug as they walked. "Depends on my mood. Usually helps me sort stuff out, make some decisions. Sometimes a story or two. Those are pretty horrid however." She admitted, her eyes following a bird as it flew through the trees and a true smile found its way onto her face and lit it up as nothing else could hope to.

Alek's gaze was discreet as he watched her smile. She didn't smile enough for a princess.

Not wanting to elimitnate that smile, he chose not to perpetuate the conversation. Instead, he walked quietly, ever vigilant to their surroundings. He enjoyed these walls with Millicent. They were calm, quiet, relaxing. Life at the castle was always busy, always hectic. They were consistently making plans for a fete or gala.... In fact, the princess's birthday was tomorrow and there was a massive party planned. Guests were supposed to start arriving at the end of the day today. Alek had been selected for duty tomorrow night, of course. He was still a low level guard, always getting the short end of the stick. He didn't mind too much. He'd get two days off in a row for serving the party.

Asta shrugged her shoulders. "With him, there's no telling." She told him as she rested her hand on Camulos' large neck. He nickered softly, pawing at the ground as he stared over at where the inn was and the men who were staring with narrowed eyes. Even the horse was picking up on the bad vibes over there as he moved his large body to block Asta from them.

"You don't have to stay here, you know." She told him as she tucked her hair behind her ear and FINALLY looked at him. As in fully looked at him with all of her attention, not the usually distracted glances.

Millicent sighed happily as they walked, not noticing as her magic flared up. It was a troublesome side-effect of relaxing. As she walked the flowers along the ground gained a bit of life, a few animals scurried closer in curiosity. As she found herself daydreaming about running away, not dealing with the circus that was waiting for her back home, a large, pitch black wolf crossed her path. She came to a stop with a blink as the wolf's ears pinned back and a soft growl emitted from her chest, apparently not a fan of the company she kept. "Let go of your sword." She told Alek but she kept her eyes on the wolf. Kisha never attacked her but one could tell by the scar going down the wolf's broad chest she wasn't a fan of blades.

She carefully set her satchel down on a patch of grass, setting the book of runes on top. Millicent carefully stepped forward, hoping Alek would listen to her. She'd known Kisha since she was a pup, nursed the poor thing back to health after one of the guards caught hold of her. Of course the king wouldn't hear of the wolf in the palace so she had to bring her back out here. Normally Kisha avoided her if she saw Alek...something wasn't right.

Randon chuckled with a shrug, leaning back against the light post. "Nah. Would feel too darn guilty if I let those rat bata'ds get hold of ye. Sides, not like keepin' a pretty lass company is exactly a chore." He mused with a small grin, showing the slight dimples in his cheeks. He knew Farron would be cross if he got there too late to her stall but she'd understand. Besides, when was Farron ever not cross with him on some level?
