Millicent bit her lip to keep from screaming that this wasnt fair; to keep her composure. She had to keep calm but the captain could probably feel her hands tremble a bit as they danced. She couldn't afford to lose it here. Not now. "I-..." She trailed off, taking a beat to think over her words. "With all do respect we're friends. Just because I find him more competent than the other guards...I don't understand your concerns because if you say his weakness, as it were, to be his relationship with me, it is to infer I would be in danger as well. I don't understand it...but I highly doubt I can change your mind." She said finally, her voice soft that if they hadn't been dancing he wouldn't have heard her. She honestly felt about ready to throw up.

Markus listened patiently to the princess, feeling the trembling in her hands.

It wasn't until the end of her assumption that he actually brought his eyes away from the ballroom and smiled at her. It eased his stern features and revealed a warm side to him. He was still a handsome man, but in his youth, there was no doubt that he had the attentions of women everywhere.

"That's precisely what I'm inferring, Millicent," he agreed, using only her name. It quantified her, brought her down from her royal status and placed her right beside his concerns for his son. "It does make it easier when the person you're trying to speak to is actually marvelously intelligent," he added off-handedly.

Millicent blinked, looking back to Markus as he confirmed her theory. Now she really felt sick. How... She didn't make any offense to anyone. She purposefully kept her head down as much as possible. A light of dawning went through her eyes as the song ended, glancing ever so briefly to her stepfather who was chatting it up with a dignitary. He had hated her since he came into the picture and had never hidden it. She looked to Markus with a true attempt at a small smile. "W-who would be assigned in his absence?" She asked, trying to ignore the contorting of her gut. She wanted to ask more questions, tell him of her concerns, but she doubted this was the venue.

"I haven't decided on that entirely yet. Second Captain Marek for the time being. He's the only one I know that I can trust." Markus stopped as the song ended and clapped along with the rest of the crowd. As the clapping dwindled, he offered Millicent his arm to take her back to the sea of people. He couldn't risk a longer talk, but he hadn't stressed to the princess what danger she was in. More danger than Alek by far..

Millicent nodded, "As long as it isn't Reynolds..." She said simply, her weak attempt at a joke, clapping as well as the song ended. She took the captain's offer happily, seeing Prince Phillip hovering nearby. Maybe if she simply looked busy he'd stay away. Besides, the king seemed to favor the slimeball. No way in the world would she let him get near if she could help her.

By the time Phillip found Millicent, he was well into his fourth glass of wine. Sauntering over, he gave her a brief bow. "Your highness. Captain." he didn't even bother looking over at Markus; his eyes on the princess. "May I say that you look absolutely radiant tonight." he smirked at her, his eyes discreetly, yet not so discreetly wondering over her body in its entirety.

Millicent internally groaned as Phillip made his presence known. She refrained from scowling at him, flexing her hand a bit as she felt his eyes roam over her. "I believe you may say it. Whether or not I listen is another story, m'lord." She replied, a hint of sarcastic humor in her voice. "I will note, however, that the merlow staining your collar does bring out your eyes. Might I suggest sticking with...lighter wines?" She added, turning her attention back to the captain, hoping he would somehow save her from this torture.

Phillip laughed while inside he wanted nothing better than to show this twit her place. "Ah, your ever sparkling wit is present I see, your highness. Truly, you would not be the same person without it." He teased her. "Captain, may I steal the birthday girl for a dance." Although he didn't phrase it as a question and his eyes were still on the princess.

Millicent felt her stomach drop at his request. Part of her knew he wouldn't leave her alone if she denied his request, the other part knowing he wouldn't leave her be if she did, in fact, say yes. She was damned either way...but maybe one if the other guards would save her or maybe she could disappear back into the throngs of people. Finally she let out a light sigh, looking to the captain then. "I suppose I should humor him. I look forward to continuing our conversation." She told him simply with a light curtsy before taking a deep breath and looking back to Phillip, a foul taste in her mouth as she spoke. "Shall we?"

Markus' calm look remained on his face as the princeling came over and eyed the princess as though she were a hunk of meat set in front of him. His face, so stoically trained after years of practice, remained pleasant as he inclined his head, but offered no amount of a bow to the prince. "Of course, sir," he said, eliminating any formal 'your majesty' or anything of the sorts. This schemer was no lord to him. "It would be remiss of me to absorb my Lady's attentions all night. After all, she is exceptionally popular and beloved to us all," he continued as he released Millicent's arm. "I'm sure there would be riots in the street if anything were happen to her."

He turned and bowed deeply to the Princess, flagrantly insulting the princeling's status. "My Lady. As always, a true pleasure. Keep safe." He rose from his bow to see another man standing a few steps off, breaking through the crowd of people. It was the man's surreal eyes that caught the Captain off guard.

"Ah, I have missed my chance," said the man Millicent had met in the courtyard earlier, the one from the island nation. "My good sir, I requested the next song to be played so I could dance with the princess. It is a song of my home. Would it be too much of me to request this dance with her?"
