Millicent scanned the pages curiously, settling back into her pillows as she continued to read the scrawly handwriting. A small smile crept onto her lips when she realized it was a story but she was a bit confused at the same time. It was obviously written by someone much younger...maybe Alek had started it a while back. She glanced up to make sure her doors were locked, not wanting to be disturbed, before gracelessly pulling off her boots and really curling up on her bed. Once she was fully settled into her pillows she continued reading on, now overwhelmed with curiosity. It was like getting a glimpse behind the stony, guardsman facade he put on all day...

-------

Damon poured himself and the young prince a dram, knowing the conversation wouldn't take long. Phillip was such a ridiculous pawn it almost played out as too easy. Once again his belligerent step-daughter had refused to give him half a thought as a suitor but now the control laid with him.

See, what Millicent didn't realize was that she'd rejected all but a few of the eligible men in the lands. Now it was his turn to pick, hence why he gave the vain creature before him a second chance so to speak. He was easily manipulated, spurred on by wealth and glory...he also had a streak to him which Damon figured would do his step-daughter some good. Put the bull-headed little bitch back into her proper place.

"Now, I hear you have some concerns about the princess..." He mused simply, deep voice carrying easily. They were in a corner of the castle barely anyone traveled down save the sick for the infirmary and they were too preoccupied to listen in on conversation. "It has come to my attention that she's rejected your advances and charms as she has done to every suitor. Apparently this concerns you, my boy?" He asked, almost an amused but dark smirk on his lips as he took a sip.

((Prince Phillip: https://charahub.com/character/301115/Prince-Phillip/public/ ))

Prince Phillip was lounging lazily in the chair across from the king of this land, looking beyond bored, his blue eyes taking over everything in the room. One day this room would be his to do with as he liked and he couldn't wait. Looking back over as the king spoke up, he did his best to show respect, his finger lazily twirling his crown around. His free hand reached out and took the glass, waiting respectfully for the King to sip first before he took a drink. While ambitious, he knew better than to piss off King Damon. "She's very..." He tried to find a way to describe the girl the man had taken in. Honestly, if he had been in the man's position he would have found a way to throw the brat over a bridge a long time ago. "What if she doesn't fall for it? Granted, I am the best bet so it shouldn't matter in the end. I just wish she wasn't so stubborn. It's simply not a woman's place." He took another sip from his glass as he looked over at the king.

"Your actions lately haven't gone unnoticed, Aleksandr. I told you when you first trained for this what it would mean. People already accuse me of nepotism -- one of my sons is second in command and my second son is well on his way to upper ranks as well," Markus' voice was quiet, a hum in the long hallway.

"I understand, Father," Alek droned on, tired of hearing this age old talk.

"Then you'll understand why I have to reassign you," Markus completed his sentence, not looking at his son.

"You already did that."

"As a personal guard of the royal caravan," Markus finished, once again biting back the annoyance of being interrupted.

Alek stopped dead in his tracks. "What?" The royal caravan was a band of merchants employed by the Crown to go out into the world and bring back goods to the castle. They were on the road nearly constantly.

Markus had continued walking, not bothering to acknowledge Alek's shock. He would come to understand in time and besides, a few years seeing the world would help him grow immensely.

The Captain was about to respond when he heard low voices drifting down an adjacent hallway.

Damon nodded sagely, "Stubborn is putting it lightly. Unfortunately, her father and her lady put thoughts into her head that she's held onto firmly. I do agree, however, that Millicent needs to learn her place." He mused simply, trying not to roll his eyes at the young man across from him. He was hardly the "best bet" but he had to do. At least for the moment.

"And it doesn't matter if she buys it. What part of an arranged marriage do you not understand, boy? Just...be on behavior for a bit. Try at least to impress her even slightly. Figure out what she finds in that....pathetic little guardsman that follows her like a puppy. last thing I need a the moment is for her to cause a rukus. The people love her too much. Once those vows are exchanged I don't right care what you do with the wench." Damon added, waving the idea away. Once she was married she was no longer his issue.

Phillip nodded, trying his best not to look bored as they went over the exact same argument they had every time. However, he could not hide his disgust as King Damon brought up that little guardsman. Commoners were only good for a nice lay when nothing else was around. Why anyone would spend extended amounts of time with such filthy creatures was beyond him. "Yes... that little guardsman. I have my own plans for him after the wedding." He said as he waved the thoughts away. "But I'll do my best to 'woo her tonight'." He promised the king. "How long should I wait after the marriage before we instill our next plans?"

Damon thought over what he'd say next for a moment, taking a sip of his liquor. "Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to say you can off the wench the wedding night it wouldn't do you much good. The marriage must remain intact for two months time in order for you to remain eligible for the crown." He told him with a simple shrug, even though he knew this daft jack-off across from him would never see a day on the throne. Idiot would probably walk out announcing the "shock" and "horror" of Millicent's death holding the murder weapon. The two month window was simply his way of torturing his stepdaughter.

"I'm sure within that time you can find...uses for her. Remind her what a woman's place truly is." Damon added with another absent shrug.

Alek was too busy trying to argue before Markus silenced him with a hand help up. The voices were soft, but he easily identified them -- the first was that of the King, the second the obnoxious Prince that had been chosen for their princess. Why were they meeting in secret on the mostly abandoned wing of the castle?

Alek was scowling, but silence as his father moved them a few steps down a deserted hallway. That's when the voices drifted into his ears as well.

They listened until the end. Markus kept a calm demeanor, but Alek found his blood boiling halfway through. He'd seen this Phillip once before, but Phillip wasn't the type to have anything to do with anyone below his station. He treated the guards like dogs, making them do stupid things like fetching him food from the larder or something else absolutely nonsensical.

To hear them conspiring, not only to kill the princess after marrying her off to the pig, but to likely torment him? He didn't care much for his own welfare, but Millicent was beyond his realm of calmness.

As the voices dwindled, Alek started to make his way to the room, but was immediately stopped by a strong hand on his chest. Markus shook his head vehemently and quite literally dragged Alek back down the hallway, resuming their walk to the infirmary.

"What are you doing," Alek hissed, not wanting to draw any attention to them.

"Be silent," Markus replied as he took them down another hallway. Before long, they were in the infirmary wing. It was lightly guarded, only one on duty at the moment. The medic, an old man named Arthur, milled around his large infirmary room.

"Guardsman Geralt, please retrieve the Second Captain from the Princess's quarters and relieve his position. Send him to the infirmary," Markus instructed the guard, who saluted and immediately headed away.

"Arthur," Markus then called, walking his son into the large, circular room. The old man looked up with a smile. "I have an injured guard. Would you be so kind?"

"Of course, of course," Arthur waved them in and pointed at a cot for Alek to sit on as he observed the injury then hobbled off to find his dressings.

"Father," Alek insisted now that they were safe from prying ears.

"Wait for your brother and then we'll talk. Don't interrupt me now," Markus chided as he walked away, clearly deep in thought.

Leila was busy ushering two younger ladies in waiting down the hall, threatening if they got so much as a speck of dirt on the gown she'd have them doing floors for a month. She looked up, confused to see the second captain standing guard of Millicent's room. "Hello, Marek." She said simply, giving him a small smile, but frowned when she found the door locked. "Malady? Come now your gown is here. I want to make sure there are no more alterations to be done. Princess?"

Millicent was reading through the story for the third time. She quickly stashed the journal away under her mountain of pillows as she heard Leila. Scrambling up she unlocked the door with her usual small smile, looking to be in a much better mood than when Marek saw her last. "Sorry...I was reading. Locked it as to not be disturbed. You know how Prince Phillip can be." She explained simply, making room for the girls to come in. She was happily surprised to see the dress was a lot less full than others.

She was about to question why Marek was guarding her room when she saw another guardsman coming up. So instead she gave him a small smile before heading back into the room and locking it firmly. Now began her process of pretending....

((Pic of her dress is attached :) ))

Millicent rung her hands as she waited for Leila’s allowance to move. Make-up and hair had taken seemingly forever tonight, not to mention the mask Kandice has insisted upon first. She’d had just enough time to sneak down to the stables to finish packing her bag. It now included the journal Alek had given her along with the pendulum. She wasn’t necessarily set on running away still, at least not tonight with everyone on their guard and now that she had an ally within the walls. It hadn’t been easy but luckily everyone was busy with the guests and such to pay her much mind. She also planned on speaking with the Capitan herself as soon as possible. She didn’t feel it was right to punish Alek when he was simply following what she’d decided on.

She sighed happily as she was allowed to sit up finally, smiling as the cloth was removed. “I can’t believe how heavy this dress is…” She laughed as she stood, smiling as one of the younger maidens helped her slip on her heels.

“Just because it isn’t wide don’t mean it will me any less of a pain.” Leila reminded her with a light chuckle.

“Not painful just…heavy. Ornate.” Millicent mused with a small smile, taking in a deep breath as she looked in the mirror for the first time.

“Look at that! Ye actually have a figure in this dress.”

“Leila!” Millicent felt her cheeks burn but she couldn’t help but laugh, knowing her lady was right. Usually the dresses she wore hid her curves but this one seemed to accentuate every single one. It would be an…interesting night.
--------------------------------------------------------
Millicent took a deep breath, hearing the commotion on the other side of the double doors. Maybe she would just hide all night. She was about half a breath from turning and hiding in her room, adjusting her gloves when she heard her name echo and the doors opened.

She put on a small smile as she stepped through to the hall, looking down at the sea of people. Oh good gods above… She took another deep breath before descending the steps, discreetly trying to catch glimpses of a friendly face. One in particular...

Phillip had dressed and headed to the ballroom for the princesses birthday celebration quite open. There was a delicious bottle of wine with his name on it. Something he was going to need to tolerate the princesses prim behaviour. Finishing up his second glass and snapping to get a servants attention for a refill, he happened to look up and see the self same woman he was supposed to be 'wooing' with his charms tonight. Waiting for the much needed glass of wine, he just turned, not even acknowledging the help as he sauntered over right towards the princess.
