((Okay! *rubs hands* Let's see what I can come up with!)) The night had passed smoothly for Asta and Aleron. As guaranteed, once Aleron had mentioned the name Caius Black, the room price lessened considerably. And just like always, Asta abandoned Aleron in the middle of the night to sleep in the stables with the horses. He didn't know why she never slept in an actual bed, but he couldn't get her to stay in a room for a whole night. She'd always slip off. So the next morning when he woke up, he fetched breakfast for the both of them and brought it into the stables to find Asta already up and taking care of the horses. And not just theirs either, but every horse kept in the stables for the inn. They were all looking at her dotingly, head's sticking out and waiting like dogs to be scratched. He shook his head, amazing at her gift with the beasts sometimes. "Asta, I brought breakfast. I know you're hungry, you're always hungry." He smiled as he walked through the clean stables, probably the cleanest they had been in years thanks to her. Asta popped her head out from behind where she was brushing Camulos as she heard Aleron speak up. Grinning at her cousin, she gave her horse one last fond pat before hopping over the stall gate and walking over. "You know me so well." She said as she stole a piece of bacon and popped it into her mouth once she caught up with him. "I was thinking we could go on a walk today before our supplies are ready. I heard there's a lovely patch of woods right outside of the city gates." He suggested as her eyes lightened up, knowing what that meant. Her and Aleron's walks were... special. They always got to entertain special guests and she always had so much fun. "Let's go." She said as she shoved six more pieces of bacon into her mouth causing Aleron to emit an actual laugh. "We'll eat it on the way, just don't choke yourself, okay?" He asked as she nodded, trying not to grin or laugh around her large mouthful of food. And it was on that note that they left the stables and headed for the gates, talking and eating breakfast. |

Alek caught up to her and used her hand to close the journal gently. "Maybe later," he suggested, not entirely sure he wanted to be here when she went through it. He fell back to his place after he was sure the journal was closed and continued walking quietly. |

Millicent bit back the sigh as he closed the book but the sensation of his hand against hers caused her breath to catch. She'd forgotten her gloves. She quickly pushed the panic back, nodding as she tied the book back closed. After another moment she spoke again, "You know, you should probably walk beside me. Looks kind of odd to see a man walking behind a woman when they're both dressed in civilian cloth." She told him, glancing to him over her shoulder with her usual small smile. "Aside, it would be easier to talk if you're not behind me..." |

"Just because I'm not wearing my armor doesn't mean I'm not on duty, nor does it imply we've suddenly become social equals," Alek reminded her, wondering why she had requested this. What was she getting at? Just because he was pretending it hadn't happened...did not in any way mean it really hadn't. "You're still the princess and I'm still your guard. Captain made sure I was aware of that." |

Millicent rolled her eyes, "The captain isn't here, is he? Last time I checked hierarchy my word still rules over his, no matter how softly I speak them." She mused simply with a quirked eyebrow before sighing. What was so wrong with wanting to pretend she was normal for once? She let her eyes wander along the tree line as they entered the forest, a faint smile on her lips as she watched the early morning sun bounce off the dew of the leaves. "I'm glad you enjoyed the book I gave you..." She finally spoke up, now feeling off kilter. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all. |

Farron slept as soundly as she did every night, her dreams filled with the work she had to do. She never slept long -- after all, she had helped raise her little brothers, which meant up in the middle of the night at the drop of a pin to feed them their bottles and change their dirty linens. So she was up far before the first hint of daylight, slaving away in her forge to finish the handsome traveler's order before he arrived. -- Alek rose an eyebrow at her words, wondering if she'd ever acted royal about anything in her life. Though she held herself with poise and the trained dignity of a higher station, she was still by far the least royal royal he'd ever seen. That was actually a feat considering he'd seen quite a few over his three years in the Guard. He looked around, eyes sharp to their surroundings yet again. It was not a trait that he could simply turn off for the sake of a pleasurable stroll. Even if he could, he wouldn't... couldn't now. Knowing what he did about her, it made him uneasy. He didn't know what exactly she was capable of, nor what her real reason for bringing him out here again so soon after completely warping his view of who he'd thought she was. "I did," he answered sincerely, "Though really, most of the stories and jokes in it were rather.... terrible, actually. I'm quite certain the joke I told you was more suited for a four year old... not a twenty-three year old princess. Why a humourous book anyhow? Do you find me that banal?" |

Millicent looked over her shoulder as he spoke up, giving a small, awkward giggle and a shrug. "I didn't get a good look at it, to be honest, before buying it." She admitted, "And it is not that I find you banal, guardsman, simply that I believe it would do you good to smile at least once in a moon cycle." She shrugged, a light blush on her cheeks as she walked along. She gripped the book a little tighter, trying to reign in her magic. She didn't want to scare him off again. |

"I smile enough," he insisted lightly, watching as bright orange fox skittered across their path, stopping unusually close to them as it seemed to investigate Millicent. Watching the strange animal behavior made him a bit uneasy again. "Princess, why did you bring me out here again?" |

Millicent giggled lightly, trying to ignore the fox as it hesitated. She flicked her foot gently so he would scurry away before feeling her stomach clench at his question. She stopped at the clearing and with a deep breath turned to face him. "I know things...changed yesterday but...I..." She bit her lip and refocused, "Despite it all you're the only one I feel safe going on these walks with. I would not have asked normally. I would have let more time pass but...but I needed to clear my head before tonight and - all of the other men in the guard they've assigned me..." She shook her head and a look of almost disgust passed on her face and she crossed her arms across her. "All the captain and the others care about are appearances. They all think I'm some little naive--" She took another breath and finally looked to him. "I wanted a chance to explain myself...if you'd let me. I...I already feel horrid for you getting in trouble for something that was my fault. What happened yesterday...I didn't mean to scare you..." She stumbled out, knuckles almost white around the journal. |

Alek stopped walking when she started talking. His face was passive, neither judgmental nor frightened... he was simply listening to her. He chewed on his thoughts for a while, noticing the way she was gripping the book. To be entirely honest, she seemed more afraid of him than he did of her right now. "Prin-....Millicent," he corrected after a long measure of silence, "...I thought a lot about this last night. About what happened. You should know... that my unfavorable reaction wasn't...necessarily because of you, but because when I was five, my mother was murdered in front of my eyes by those who could do magic. We were just on our way home from her shopping at a traveling bazaar and they attacked her. I watched it all from the underneath a vendor stall that she pushed me into when they surrounded her." He emitted a long stream of air, having spoken rather quickly through the explanation. Discomfort, most likely. "I know...what you are isn't your choice. I can't... mindlessly begin hating you because you were born different. I'm not going to do that. I just....." He paused again, trying to find the right words. It was proving difficult. ((I literally don't know what to do with myself. A character who isn't emotionally destroyed, he speaks his mind, doesn't keep secrets...IT'S SO WEIRD!)) |
