Leila nodded sagely, "I understand captain. This has gone on far long enough. Especially with the Prince here and the announcement tomorrow we can't risk the image issues but..." She sighed running a hand over her graying hair. "You have been around long enough to know the princess isn't the steadiest, especially around her birthday. It is all she asked for. A princess who could ask for anything in the kingdom a sunrise stroll in the woods is all she wants. To clear her head and be able to face everyone that night. You know full well she'll refuse any other guard, including you sire. I'm afraid it will be no good to have her in a fit prior to a ball with so many dignitaries about the castle." She explained, even though she didn't sound completely sold on the idea either.

Marek began to whistle a tune about halfway through Leila's spiel, a particularly popular one that was played in raunchy alehouse regarding procreation.

Markus shot Marek a stern glare and the younger man chuckled to himself as he switched hands with the letter opener.

Markus sighed again and waved his hand. "As you wish, Lady... but I'll grant this under one condition -- this never happens again. I wish for you to explain that to the Princess, whether before or after their stroll, I'll leave to your discretion. I'll have Guardsman Camilleri waiting for her at the side gates -- I think it best we maintain as mum as possible and stay away from the front gates."

Leila nodded, "I will, sire, and thank you." She paused though and turned her attention to Marek then. "You, on the other hand, boy will do well to sit up straight and I hear ye whistling that tune again when thy lady's name comes up I doubt I will be reprimanded from smacking that smug look off of your face. By the gods above, lad, get yourself together. You are a disgrace to your uniform and above all your family namesake." She snapped, eyes like daggers before turning once more to Markus with a nod of her head. She left then as dignified as she came in without a glance back. She'd helped raise Millicent since she was a tike and almost like a mother she protected her.

Millicent woke up ridiculously early the next day, carefully slipping out of her bed as to not stir Kida. Dinner was as horrid as she could’ve ever imagined. Prince Phillip was as pompous as ever and she felt a little skeeved in the way he spoke to her when they were on their own for a few minutes. Bastard even tried to kiss her! Nerve of some men. She just hoped he never came back after the ball. Kida had seen her sallow mood and insisted on being her bedfellow for the evening. It had helped some, especially when Kida realized that she’d brought home a new book of tales and legends.

Unfortunately she hadn’t slept well during the night as Alek’s look of fear overwhelmed her dreams. She dressed in a pair of riding slacks, a looser, simple grey top with a corset belt, hair in a two braids pinned up on the back of her neck and brown leather boots that came up over her knee. It would probably be the simplest outfit Alek had ever seen on her and for a reason; she’d bought it herself. She slipped her cloak over her, grabbed a bag she’d packed the night prior, and headed downstairs.

She slipped into the stables, stashing the bag in the stall of her mare, before finally heading to the side gates where Alek would be waiting. She didn’t know how Leila had managed to convince the captain, or how the captain had gotten Alek to agree, but she wasn’t going to complain. She had a feeling another lecture would be coming her way but she didn’t care. She would get through the ball tonight with her head held high and under fall of night she would be gone. She wouldn’t wait for Alek to make up his mind. She would run as far away as she could get. Maybe she’d come back one day. Maybe when the king was dead…but not until magic was accepted.

Millicent saw Alek waiting and her stomach dropped. What if he changed his mind…? Maybe…maybe she couldn’t do this. No matter the doubt in her head her feet carried her forwards before finally coming to a stop in front of him, “Guardsman…” She said softly, obviously nervous about all of this.

Alek had barely had enough time to stash his books the night before when the captain had been announced in the quarters. While surprised Markus was looking for him, he was even more surprised at what he was being told to do at sunrise.

He'd spent a good portion of the evening contemplating what he wanted to do. No matter what route he took, he always ended up at the simple truth; she was still Millicent.

That simple fact was what had him leaning against the palace wall beside the side gate just before the sun's rays spread out over the horizon. He wasn't dressed in full regalia like yesterday, since technically they weren't going into public today. Instead, he wore a simple pair of slacks that were tucked into knee high leather boots, a brown shirt and a leather belt. He still had his long sword strapped to his waist though.

He stood up straight as Millicent approached him. He watched her for a moment, not offering his customary 'good morning, my lady'.

After an extended moment, he unfolded his arms. "What do you call a cow with no legs, princess?"

Millicent bit her lip as the silence lingered, not sure what to do when he spoke. She blinked, obviously caught off guard. Was...was he actually trying to joke with her? "I...no, m'lord, I don't know." She mused, offering a quiet, almost awkward laugh as she came closer. To the normal distance they kept. She noticed then how different he looked outside of his full regalia. It...it was a nice change that she didn't get to see often.

"Ground beef," he replied. Dropping his arms had revealed he was holding two things, both of which he raised and held out to Millicent. The first was a small, leather-bound book that looked well-worn and was tied shut with a leather strap. the second was placed on top of the book; a single flower. It wasn't one that grew in the castle gardens, so he must have gotten it somewhere else.

"Happy nameday, Princess," he offered gently.

Millicent couldn't help but giggle, finding the joke all that much more amusing simply because Alek never joked. She went to comment when she saw what was in his hands. It took a moment to realize what he'd said. That the journal and the flower were for her. She took them silently, turning the gorgeous journal over in her hands after weaving the flower into her hair. All the while, a truly happy smile emerged on her lips. One of the few that lit up her face and reached her eyes. Did this mean they were alright? That maybe...maybe they could actually be friends? That maybe she didn't have to worry?

Knowing it wouldn't be seen as proper or right, she couldn't help herself and quickly stepped forward to give him a true but brief hug. "Thank you, Alek." She mused, quickly stepping back as ig realizing what she'd done. Her face red but happy, holding the journal close to her as she fumbled for something to say.

Alek shrugged a shoulder, going stiff under her abrupt hug. He hadn't been expecting that. Luckily, it didn't last very long and he was able to avoid an awkward situation - it was her nameday... everyone deserved to be given a present for their nameday.

"Of course," he responded, glancing away. "Shall we," he asked, waving his hand for her to take the lead, as always. "Oh...and that journal isn't completely empty," he forewarned her, thinking it might have been a poor idea of a present in the first place. So much for trying to be original. He waited for her to walk forward, intending to take up his spot at her left, as usual.

Milicent smiled shyly as they began to walk, blinking as he said the journal wasn't completely empty. "Really?" She asked curiously, debating for a moment if she should open it up now or wait. Would it embarrass him? Well, he had mentioned it...and she had to admit the curiosity was killing her though. Finally she undid the strap wrapped around the journal, opening the book carefully.
