What really defines a hardcore gamer? I don't consider hardcore people to be the ones who play things like Halo and other FPSes, because that depends less on "gaming intensity" and more on taste. If I'm an avid Nintendo fan, does that mean I'm not hardcore? Since the Wii is mostly a console for family entertainment and all age groups, does that mean I'm not really a gamer for playing Wii games? This question has always bothered me. I like to consider myself a gamer because I LOVE video games and have to devote a few hours every day to playing them, but I feel like I can't because I don't play the kinds of games that other "gamers" play. |

Technically, you could play in browser flash games and still be a "gamer." You play games, you're a gamer, simple as that. |

Maybe you're a "hardcore" Wii gamer? Anyway, even those hardcore gamers that play the FPS titles enjoy playing Wii games. I just think gaming is gaming, and its fun. It's cool that there are people out there who can stat crunch and come up with instant strategies in a game. But there's nothing wrong with just kicking back and casually enjoying any game, regardless of the console it is on. I suppose there is a difference between someone who plays games and a gamer. I think a 'gamer' finds more joy in it, hunts down new games/games they heard about. Someone who plays games was probably given a console for Christmas and occasional play a game like Guitar Hero. While a gamer would request a console for Christmas or hoard their money for it. Does that make sense? |

I suppose, but there's also the whole "casual" factor. Do games like Mario and Zelda and Muramasa count as casual games? I just don't understand what really defines someone as a hardcore gamer or a casual gamer. Does it depend more on the games they play or on their ability/desire to play them?

Casual gaming, imho, is exactly what it says. I'm sure you've seen at least one person get really into a game, like an FPS. They're wanting to make it to the top of the score board and pwn anyone that stands in their way. Or maybe you know someone that very carefully plots out where each stat point should go towards their RPG character. Yez? I think casual gameplay is just sit down and play. I suppose it might have to do with your mind set, rather than the game itself. Mario can get pretty intense. And shooters can actually make for casual fun if you just want to shoot at things. It doesn't take much thought and should be relaxing. Then again, casual can also be referred to as Wii type games. Cutesy and stuff... Meh. |

Casual means you don't need to push yourself to reach the end of the game. There's been lots of casual games since the SNES era... |

Then what would you say specifically makes a gamer hardcore? Sorry if it seems like I'm asking the same thing over and over again. |

I think "hardcore" as a word to describe gamers has been obfuscated and twisted around to the point where its actual meaning is no longer relevant to any one sub-sect of gaming, nor to the larger group of people that play games in general. It's used to describe people that play sport-simulators, war games, RPGs, and platformers, but no group concedes that the groups they don't play can also be hardcore. Because of the constant infighting, no one really manages to win. |

It all boils down to opinion, in my opinion. XD Maybe there's different levels of hardcore? Sometimes when I think of hardcore I think of the all-out gamer. Must win. Must beat the game. Must get the best armor. Must tactically use stat points/must have best character build. Must do dungeon runs with the guild. Etc, etc. At the same time though, I don't see why you can't be hardcore for beating the games you enjoy and collecting the extra material therein. *shrugs* This is a good discussion topic, but I just feel there are so many ways to approach 'casual' and 'hardcore' and that everyone has their own idea about them. That, and no one should take either label too seriously or try to fall into one. Me, I'm an Epic Gamer

Imo it's when you can pick a game up, and play it without problems/ be pro at it after a very short time (because of your experience by years of gaming) Like when I got DJ Hero (I SUCK! at GH) after a little hour I were already playing on Expert. |

Yeah, that's a good one to. Being able to grasp the controls and objectives of a game without the use of manual. |
