OnLive; Gaming... revolutionized?

Found this awhile back. They claim to be going live this Winter, but who knows what delays and failures may prevent that.

OnLive: The Future of Gaming

It sounds highly impressive... if it works. Play any video game OnLive has available on your entry level PC, Mac, or TV. Light speed game downloads, cross 'platform' gameplay (TV users can play PC users), minimal hardware required. I just wonder how much it will end up costing and what fees they will charge.

My biggest issue would be the lack of... material game. For the most part, I like to physically own my video games, anime, books, etc... It is a lot like the concerns people have with the new PSP GO! But, the idea is great and I'd like to be able to try it at some point.

Oh, and this is my favorite part (seeing as my CPU sucks...)

What if I want to play OnLive on my PC or Mac-what are the minimum specs?
Since the game is running in the OnLive data center, our system requirements are pretty low. All you need is a PC running a current version of Windows XP® or Vista®, or an Intel®-based Mac running a current version of OS X.

Definitely one of the biggest hurdles for OnLive is getting consumers over the need to own a physical copy of their game. The next is getting the current console companies to agree to switch over entirely to hardware. Honestly, I don't see Nintendo doing that unless their next console sells a very small number. So they won't be able to become the one "super console" like they originally wanted to, but still, it sounds cool.

I wouldn't want any one console to be the super console. Options are always good. But something like OnLive is... well it's nice to have THAT kind of an option. An option with multiple options. XD I don't know how most Nintendo games would work on OnLive due to motion control, so Nintendo should always have a place. Unless OnLive eventually supports motion control.

I think I could get over not having the actual game in hand aside from a few games I'd want to collect and keep for eternity. Like Zelda. But it is always nice to know you can hold the game in your hand. And what about trading games? That's been a gamer's past time forever. Trading games with friends, trading them to Gamestop, or even sites like Goozex.

Not to mention that if the memory of that bad boy gets wiped completely (passing stereo magnets or something?) who's to say you're ever getting your games back?

And even if they did keep that information on file, you'd have to download them all over again...

And, what if the memory gets wiped ten or twenty years from now? I don't think that downloading system is gonna be around forever...

Exactly. Nothing lasts forever. What happens when you put hundreds of dollars into purchasing those games via OnLive and suddenly the company crashes? All sorts of businesses and companies fail, OnLive could be just another.

The downloading is supposed to be "like nothing you've ever seen" so, if they're not exaggerating, redownloading the games should be painless. So long as a record of purchase is kept.

But my hopes are high. I want to be able to play almost any game without having to own a top of the line PC and three different consoles.

And about console trades? If you buy an onlive thing used, do you get the last person's games as well?
What's up with that, eh?

Hmm... There might be some sort of account tied to OnLive. Like you can access your games from any OnLive hardware if you have an account. The PC and Mac, apparently just use a browser plug in. While the TV needs to have the little device. I think the games are almost... streamed to your computer or TV. The video says "no downloads or installs," which baffles me to be honest. *confused and unsure*

I think it would be great if you could gift games though, kind of like on Steam.

Hmm... So if the games aren't downloaded, doesn't that mean that you wouldn't even be able to play your single player games without connecting to the internet?

What if the system is down for repairs?

OnLive does require a constant internet connection, as far as I know.

Your game runs in a state-of-the-art OnLive game server center

Unless they have a back up server, you're screwed during server downtime. But, it shouldn't be too bad. If they're professional and serious you either won't notice any maintenance, or it will be scheduled and timely. Now, if the server crashes and needs repairs... and maybe even data was lost... well, that's a different story.

Not to mention patches and re-releases. It'll be hard to have that one rare copy of a game where such and such was misspelled or so and so has a slightly different appearance.

Looks like they've got that covered.

How do I patch or update my games?
OnLive games are patched and updated automatically for you in the OnLive data center. So, games start up the instant you click on them.

I really doubt this will take off, since the game companies are very snobby with their games, and do not like to share, much like young children. I don't see it working at all, with the different controllers, and specs, and such. That sort of thing seems as if it doesn't have the specs to handle it. Plus with people online and stuff at the same time on one network like that? Nope.

I guess we'll find out soon enough, Hydro. BUT STOP CRUSHING MY DREAMS! It SUPPOSED to be coming soon: Winter of 2009. We're in Winter, so if it stays on track and actually gets off the ground, it can be expected soon... Otherwise :'(

I'm sorry for crushing your dreams, but I've only heard like, one thing about it! And that is this. xD It kinda seems like a joke tbh.
