Slowly lulling into consciousness, Xorad the demon took stock of his restraints. His wrists were bound using a rope enchanted to prevent fraying and breakage, his feet were shackled with heavy chains that would barely give him a full stride, lest he chose to attempt running. All in all, it had been a day since he had been separated from his beloved Selena, and he was doomed.

Since turning his back on his people, Xorad had committed crimes against his people in protecting Selena, maiming and killing other demons and their Hellhounds. It was all justifiable in his mind, but the Under saw things quite differently. He had committed treason of the highest kind, denied his duty and his own.

"Awake at last, Gallen," resounded a voice soft as a whisper, yet with enough force to be heard leagues away if he so chose. Turning with a groan to look at his captor, all garbed in black with a half-mask across his face. The man seemed as though he would be shorter than Xorad, but it was hard to tell at his vantage on the ground.

"Awake, depends on your definition," Xorad responded calmly, though he was most unsettled. Please, let Selena be safe, he thought as though he were beseeching any God or Goddess who would watch over her.

Much to Xorad's dismay, Selena was not at a great distance away from him and his captor, in fact she was concealed behind a sand dune a mere few feet from them both. The Lycan had been tracking them since the demon's capture and just now had managed to catch up to them, though to her increasing agitation an opportunity to save him had yet to present itself. Despite the fact neither of them were aware of her presence, which she made sure by suppressing her scent through a mixture of scent-cancelling herbs, she had no knowledge of the captor's capabilities in combat and magic and since Xorad was thoroughly bound, thus unable to assist.

Fortunately she was not alone, Aislin was perched upon her shoulder prepared to take action at Selena's command. It seemed an inadequate team, but it was the best she could muster. With bow and arrow in hand and her daggers in easy reach, she waited.

"A prideful, yet unnecessary comment with no true answer. Merely a ruse to draw information out of me without asking questions," that chilling voice responded. In responding even with that statement, he revealed information about himself. He was calculating, with an icy voice that held no emotion. He could be an Azuatm or an Erapor. It was hard to say with the black garb and hooded face.

"Fair enough," Xorad deferred. "So I suppose you wouldn't answer questions if I asked how long you've been tracking me or what they told you my crimes were." It was a passive aggressive approach again, but Xorad was good at that sort of thing. If any, there was a very small chance that anyone would rescue him from this sticky situation, as he would hope that Selena would have heeded his advice and run as fast as she could. He was mortified at the possibility that they would seek to harm her as well. It was a risk he was not willing to take. At least he could glean some information that he could use as leverage or clues as to how he could best this mysterious man and escape.

"What crimes do those of the Under need? There is no code of law, only of power and obedience. You had power, but were expected to obey. Be glad my assignment wasn't to hunt down that little Dog you were after to begin with. They are more worried that they get you back under their control than cleaning up the mess you made of your job." He seemed irritated that Xorad had even asked. Rightfully so, Xorad now felt a pang of guilt for doing what he thought right. In the Under, there was no right, no good. There was only manipulation and obedience. It was Xorad's fault that this Demon was now here, tracking and returning Xorad to where he should have been in the first place rather than performing his own duties.

"I would ask forgiveness, but there would be no point," the demon stated resigned. Sighing, he now saw that he stood on the line between all that his nature was and would allow him to be and all that was unattainable to him, though he wished that the good could prevail in his heart.

Seeing as the captor's back was facing towards her and was seemingly unaware of her presence, it was an opportune moment to attack, a moment she snatched without hesitation. Drawing her special arrows, she shot three in quick succession, aiming to entrap the demon in its enchanted bindings or at least hit a vital organ or major artery as it should if he moved slightly from his position. And at this close a distance, it impossible not to assume that they would hit their mark unless if the demon had any aces up his sleeves that the Lycan was not aware of.

Once she let the arrows fly, she dropped both bow and quiver of arrows, both emitting dull thuds once they reached the sandy grounds. In one had she drew out Lycan's Fang, in the other she gripped another enchanted arrow. Selena reared herself to leap out of her hiding spot at any given moment, while Aislin spread out her wings, ready to take flight and assist in this rescue.

Xorad heard the twang-hiss of arrows and his heart sank into a cold fear. Fear, his own weapon and enemy. His first thought was ambush, but none would dare set an ambush when his captor radiated a cold danger. His second thought was Selena, but he had told her to run. She had to have listened, survival instincts would have driven her far from danger, wouldn't they?

Two arrows struck the sand between Xorad and his captor, the third incinerating before in could strike the mercenary. The Demon stood quickly, half turning to keep Xorad and the 'visitor' in his range of vision. Looking dead at Xorad, the orange, fiery eyes bored into his soul, seeking information. Xorad's resistance resulted in only burning pain lancing through his appendages, a simple trick for a fire demon.

"I saw your fear, Azuatm. What weakness! I know you have something to do with this, even if you won't admit it," the enraged demon hissed. This man was well trained and far better disciplined than Xorad was. His mind wasn't right, so he waited until the demon began scanning the dunes around them furiously and then grabbed one of the arrows, hiding it behind his bound forearm.

It took great effort for Selena to withhold her colourful vocabulary. Not only has all of her arrows failed to strike the captor, the attack had also alerted him to her presence. However, seeing as no fireballs have been launched in her general vicinity, it was safe to assume that though her element of surprise had severely diminished it had not been completely dispelled.

Hastily reevaluating her options, which was pitifully narrowed down to two: Reveal herself and initiate a fight with the captor, a demon whose strengths, weaknesses and combat experience was unknown to the Lycan, or remain behind the sand dune until the captor decided to seek the assailant. Time was too great a commodity to waste on formulating more options, she needed to make a gamble. With a nod, Aislin took fight, Selena however remained behind the sand dune, Lycan's Fang in hand a dagger in the other and three of her enchanted arrows clasped to her belt, ready to determine the next course of action upon the demon's reaction.

Quickly formulating a plan, driven faster by his fear of the end result for his dear Selena, Xorad began to speak. "Who says that my Fear is weakness? Fear is what my people have dominion over, as such Fear is no weakness for it is my kind which have mastered and understand Fear. The mastery of a feeling such as that is not evident by its absence in its users. Do not try to play me for a fool!"

Anger raising his voice far beyond what it should have been had Xorad been calm, he made a rash decision and prayed that Selena was close enough to hear him. With his captor turning to face and no doubt to inflict his own rage on Xorad, he pulled his arms as far back as he could and as fast as he could and hurled the arrow in his hand at his enemy. As it left his hand he felt a fierey heat lance through his core, coaxing a scream from his pained lips so that his very lungs seemed to burn with fire. Hoping that his arrow had made contact or that it was enough of a distraction for Selena to get away, he fell hard to the ground, muscles in an uncontrollable spasm.

The arrow failed to make contact, instead it merely grazed the demon, enraging him even more so with the attempted attack. Xorad's pained screams shook Selena to her core, no longer could she remain out of sight and wait, she had to act, she had to fight. It was while the captor was occupied when she leapt out from behind the sand dune and lunged towards him. Aiming to have Lycan's Fang stab him in the back and shortly follow with one of her enchanted arrows embedding itself in his side, which would hastily end this fight before it even begins.

Xorad's world was fire. His body, an eruption of fire and fear, for it filled his every sense leaving him blind, deaf, unable to feel anything but pain until that pain became all too familiar again and all he felt was heat. His mind, semi-clear, registered that the fire was not consuming his body and burning him away, but rather was in him. It was subduing him.

Helplessness. Demons learn to hate that word so deeply in their core that one accused of being so can unlock a rage so deep, they could burn whole armies away with that hate. It did not change the fact that Xorad was incapacitated, for this spell, whatever it was, took all focus away from his magic so that he could not reach it. Perhaps the feint was enough. He would either know soon for the end of this pain or the infinite continuation and the resumption of his interrogation. He prayed for the former.

Selena couldn't believe that her plan had worked, that she had managed to embed the arrow into the captors flesh. Still locked in a state of disbelief, the Lycan managed to draw the two remaining arrows before having a fireball scorch her shoulder. Gritting her teeth through the pain, she managed to stab him with the rest of the arrows as the first one took effect. For good measure she knocked the captor down in his bound state and smashed her elbow into his face, effectively knocking him out.

It was only when she was absolutely certain that he was unconscious that she dashed to Xorad's side and began to undo the ropes that bound his wrists.

Whether the pain continued or not, Xorad was unsure for he faded to a sanctuary within himself. There he was free of all pain, all consciousness receded into a blank oblivion of freedom. Though his body was still, his mind remained uncomfortably active within the Colosseum of his escape. Thoughts racing with the words he had shouted in anger to the other Demon, Xorad realized two very important things. First, that the words he spoke were true, though irrationally placed. He believed them thoroughly. The second epiphany was that he was truly weak. He couldn't even protect himself or Selena.

Within his own mind, he was a failure, weak, useless, helpless. Not hardly a Demon at all.
