His actions, they were unforgivable. Over a thousand years they'd lived and loved, lasting long enough to build an empire, to raise Siaraia up from nothing. Up until now, she'd only looked on the years with fondness, a certain warmth invading her cold skin at the thought. But it was all over now. Slowly, her slender form turned, looked upon the altar with all the malice she could muster, her crimson gaze absolutely ablaze. Still, pathetically, she wondered how it had even happened, wondered how she'd allowed it to happen. Such foolishness. She should have seen it coming. The pain, it was almost pathetic, and hurt more than she'd ever imagined any stake to the heart could. Such powerful beings they were, controlling Siaraia together since it's creation. Two beings of divine blood, wed as history's most esteemed lovers, joining to bring peace to the new race, to give them a home, shelter, and worthy leaders for the rest of eternity. But eternity had ended far too soon, and the man bound before her was not the one she'd married, not the one who had been the first to receive her gift, the only one capable of providing heirs to her throne. With apologetic eyes Demitrius stared back at her, unable to find the words to make this right, unable to muster the courage to explain his act, unable to turn back time and undo what had been done. Irreparable. Unforgivable. Even to the King of Siaraia Indira would show no mercy, could not extend a mere warning or light punishment for such crimes. He had acted against his own code, the very set of laws that he and Indira had compiled together, so many moons ago. The King of Siaraia had laid with another, had shared his bed with one not of Vampiric blood, with one not his wife. Around the Altar the masses were gathered, all of the Children of Blood, waiting in horror, unable to believe what they were seeing. Guards lined the Altar's base, their spears held high, their expressions impossible to read. It had never seemed fathomable, a fall in Siaraia's monarchs. It was never expected that Indira or Demitrius would commit any crime against their people, against their own Code. None of them knew what to expect, each face as terrified as the last, the crowd silent, still as the grave. All eyes focused on the two, Indira, standing taller than she ever had before, and Demitrius, bound and staring, with pleading eyes, streaks of crimson down his porcelain face. He knew, he knew as well as Indira that the punishment would be greater, that the penalty for his actions would be treated above and beyond that of any other vampire. Demitrius Ves'enthe would die this day, his fate sealed at the Altar, the deal struck the moment flesh touched flesh. He had betrayed her, he had turned his back on everything they'd created, everything they stood for. It was unforgivable. Only a moment longer did Indira stare him down, hold her own as the crimson tears streaked his face, as his form seemed to tremble with the silent sobs he fought to choke back. She had to remain calm, stoic before her subjects. Though one sigh did escape her bloodred lips, her eyes sliding closed for only a moment before her form turned, stepped to the edge of the Altar. So many times she'd stood in this very spot, addressing the Ves'enthe Code, and those who had broken it. But never, never had it been this difficult. Porcelain arms stretched wide, addressing her people as she readied the words her lips feared speak. "My children." She began, her crimson gaze sweeping over the crowds as intently they watched, with horror on their faces they listened, none the wiser to what their king had done, to the true reason as to why he stood bound at the Altar. "It it with great remorse that we gather on this bleak morning. It seems our king, our own Demistrius Osdara Ves'enthe, has broken the Code." Her voice echoed as far as any could hear, her words steady regardless of her anguish. For a moment her steps sent her pacing across the platform, her eyes glancing skyward. The sun would rise soon, and would bring with it the death of the only man she'd ever cared for. But the Code was the Code, procedures were what they were, and she'd be damned if he wouldn't be punished for this. "It would seem that Demitrius has found himself in the company of another. Against our Code he has mated with one not of our blood." Again she stopped. Here and there surprised whispers could be hear, rising in volume for mere moments before quickly silencing once again. For the first time, Indira did not smile at those whispers, did not take a moment to enjoy the shock, the terror. Not today, not this time, not for him. "The penalty for such a crime? Three days here, at the Altar. The penalty for our Demitrius, here?" She turned to face him, the man she'd shared everything with, only to be given this in return. Uncharacteristically, she leaned toward him, slender porcelain fingers rising to lift his chin, forcing his eyes to meet hers. Lips parted once more to speak, issuing forth only a whisper, yet it carried through the crowds as if she'd shouted. "Death." A gasp shook them all, rose from the masses as if a thousand cold, shaking breaths had been taken simultaneously. Indira still did not react, still could not surrender smile or smirk to such an event. Her eyes stared into his, deep, down to the soul as she tried to pry it from him, the excuses, the reasons, anything. He spoke not a word, just as she'd wanted. Though, as was custom, her lips did part to question, "Tell me, my love, how do you plead to such charges?" It was only...fair, to give the accused a say before their death. Not that it ever seemed to make any difference. Demitrius knew it. Against her stare his eyes clenched shut, his head shaking from side to side even in her grasp. Expectantly Indira waited, until finally his gaze met hers again, and with the most pained expression she'd ever seen splashed across his perfect face, he whispered, "Guilty." From her lips a small growl tore, as for but a moment her emotions did invade, as for a moment his true confession did fall upon her like a thousand gallons of the foulest, most dangerous poison. Her touch all but yanked away from his chin, her form rising to once again stand tall, stand proud, even in the face of such betrayal. "Soon, my children, soon the sun will shine, and we will bid farewell to our king." She couldn't keep the bite from her words, couldn't for the life of her muster up that much strength at a time such as this. The moments were silent as they waited, the air still and thick with suspense, dripping with fear, agony, terror. Indira noticed none of it, her gaze boring into the soul of her once-believed soulmate. Now and again she'd shake her head, gaze rising to the lightening sky above. In time the sun did indeed filter in, down to the altar. Indira knew that the light alone wouldn't do it, not unless they stood waiting for days. No, it couldn't, wouldn't last that long. He'd not be given that luxury. In silence Demitrius grimaced, sighed and groaned against the pain, against the slow but steady sizzle of his flesh in the brightening light. With her back turned to him she descended the stairs of the platform, emerging in a clearing opened for her by guards. With eyes forward, chin up, and emotions in check did she hold out a porcelain hand to a decorated servant, a young boy of maybe two-hundred years. Flanked was he by the sons of Siaraia, all standing at near attention, their hands clasped behind their backs, faces pulled taught with the effort of remaining motionless in the face of their father's death. Indira heaved a heavy sigh as the polished silver stake was placed gently in her palm. Another sigh, and back up the marble steps she ascended, passing numerous guards' faces, each one just as pained as the last, just as eager to take the burden from their queen, but equally terrified to commit such an act. No, Indira knew she'd have to be the one, would be the only one capable of distributing such punishment. Directly before him she stood, pausing for precious moments as she looked over him one last time, savored the form she now firmly believed had never truly been hers. Over the lies, the deceit, the countless empty nights did her mind wander, urging the anger such thoughts provoked to fuel her movements, to allow what needed be done. "Last words?" She whispered, her voice betraying her, coming out in that intimate tone only he'd heard, slipping from her lips with too much care. He was silent for some time, but his expression gave away that inner turmoil. His brows stitched together, face contorting in pain, twisting as he silently pleaded her, no. But he knew, he knew it was too late. "I'm sorry, Indira." He whispered, so low that some vampires below actually craned their necks as they attempted to hear. His words came as chokes, splutters between the pain, the fear, the agony in those moments. So many things he couldn't tell her, couldn't speak though they would save his fate. "I love you." Were his final words, spoken as evenly as he could muster, but it didn't matter. No, it only enraged the Vampiress before him more. And in that moment the beast was exposed, in that moment the Blood Mother was shown for what she could truly be, for the terror she could surely unleash. With a piercing, enraged cry she raised the stake, its ornate silver edges, the carvings engraved within glinting in the now almost blinding sunlight. Another echoed growl, a sobbing hiss tore from her lips as it was plunged down, piercing the heart of her king, of her husband, of Demitrius Ves'enthe. He'd awaited it with eyes open, body at rest despite the pain, attempting to leave this world as nobly as he could, given the circumstances. Nevertheless, the king of Siaraia was no more. How Indira wished to fall, then and there, to mourn as she'd mourned nothing before. But there was work, always work to be done and speeches to be given and declarations to be made. This morning was no different. The crowd stared on is disbelief, silent, unable to asses exactly how they should react, unable to truly believe what took place before their very eyes. At the corpse Indira stared, watching as tendrils of smoke still lifted from its searing skin. Some small part of her wanted to remove it, unlock the shackles and free him, offer a proper burial, or at least eyes closed. But she did not move, no, not closer or farther from the body for some time. Not a sound could be heard within the city walls, each and every vampire afraid to move, afraid to break the silence, afraid to invoke the wrath once more. Towards the crowd she again turned, expression defiant, proud, regal as she once more looked over her subjects. What was done had been, the future was now. Anger bubbled so intensely within her she could hardly contain it. No matter how clouded her judgement, she knew one thing to be certain, this was the beginning. The beginning of a reign the world over would remember for centuries to come. "Let it be known, my children, that from this day forward, Siaraia and the Under answer to no one." It was an odd followup to such an act, but the rage, the wrath welling inside of her could not be stopped, could not be matched, and she would have vengeance. "All of Enthesia will fall to our will. The beasts, the monsters, the nightmares that dwell within the Under will have their glory. Together we will paint the skies black. Together we will shake the very foundation of this earth." A warcry, but it was answered by no one, all too afraid of their volatile queen to make a sound. "Ready the Legion. Enthesia will be ours." And with one final glance at her subjects, she descended those marble stairs, her deep violet gown sweeping along the streets of Siaraia as a path opened up for her, as not a soul moved but those in her way. With head held high, she marched with only a handful of guards back to Lasymor, her duties fulfilled. Behind her, still bathed in the unforgiving sunlight, Demitrius's body would stay, until the sun destroyed all that was left, or until the Vampires had been victorious. |
