The Hardheart

These lands were strange, foreign to him. Forests such as these didn’t exist on the plains. It was mostly covered by fields of tall grass, a few bushes here and there and not much else in the way of being particularly interesting. It already seemed a dull place compared to all this, and he hadn’t even reached the city yet. If he turned back now he would be content with what had saw but his curiosity wouldn’t let him. Perhaps the most challenging problem would be trying to communicate and blend in with the crowds. His size and attire alone were enough to garnish him strange looks, even just from the farmers he strolled past gawked, making him feel more out of place by the minute.

Alaric adjusted the crude pack slung over his shoulder that carried all his possessions. Dark eyes roamed, staring up and down the tall oaks, in awe by their size and number. It made even he feel small. The plainsman brought his gaze to the path in front of him. It stretched on and on, disappearing into the dense forest. It would lead to Stoneferth, his destination for the time. Why had he made such a journey? Time and again he asked himself the question, wondering what drove him to leave his people and seek out others of his race…the more sophisticated humans. Surely they’d look down on him, he knew this for he was no fool, despite his brutish appearance. Perhaps simple curiosity drove him, he was unsure as of yet…and so he sought the answer.

Finding himself growing tired, feet aching in protest whilst his stomach grumbled, he decided to stop for a break. He ventured off the beaten path, wandering off to find suitable resting ground. An old tree appealed to the stranger, sitting beneath its shade and resting his pack next to him. Alaric sighed, relieved to be off his feet. He dug through his belongings, finding a few pieces of jerky still left from his last hunt and half a full.

As he chewed the tough meat, he pondered what exactly he would do in the city. The tall, powerfully built warrior was quite unlike most he’d encountered so far, though the farmers could of varied from the norm themselves, he was unsure. Their accent was also difficult to understand, despite their language being similar.

“This’ll be ah tough one,” he said through mashing teeth, “bunch o’ rude folk they be…starin’ as they do. Annoyin’, but Ah’m the strange one here.” He took a swig of his water, washing down the food. Talking to himself aloud seemed to have calmed his anxieties about his quest, but wouldn’t make the feeling disappear entirely, not until he had learned enough from these folk to fit in at least somewhat.

He peered down either direction of the path, the sound of another traveler nearby. His free hand slipped into his pack, resting comfortably on the grip of his crude weapon, a club with pieces of sharpened metal hammered throughout its head…it generally did the trick for whatever manner of beast he encountered and it would here as well if they proved more inhospitable than he once predicted.

Xnedra was taking a break from the crowds that littered the streets of Stronferth. She was happiest in the forests of Ardaven, but the forest surrounding the stone walls proved to be an immense reliefe and made her feel closer to home.
She sang out of tune, a love song about two elves that were destined to die in each others arms. They met one day, traveling from land to land, healing and learning, and they fell in love not long after they met. Because of social diffrences they could never be together, but when a war washed upon the land, the two were brought together in an epic battle, fighting for their homeland. They die in each others arms, after the last enemy is slaughtered. The song was close to her heart becuase her mother told her it was the lullabye that her father sang to Xnedra. Considering events, she had no idea whether or not to belive her, but the song still remained a huge part of her life.

She continued down the path, hardly taking notice to the man standing not a tree length away.

Nexus was walking opposite ways from the path back home. Swords on his back, shirt in his arms rather than on his person, and he looked drenched in water. He saw a suspiscious man under a tree and a woman singing a beautiful song on the path. As he passed her, he looked at her, entranced by her angelic voice.

"I must say you have a gift madam." He said while passing her. He continued walking down the path waiting for either a reply or some recognition. She was cute, but seriously, it was better that he just went home and rested.
