Some of you may recall that I was getting all pissed off about having to pay for my university application a while back, saying I didnt think it was justified or fair to be forced to pay and other shit. I still stand by that, but whatever, I have been accepted to 2 of my 4 selections so far and now its decision time.

I have been accepted into hull university on both my selections. As a result I doubt I will be considering any other applications as staying at home is the most cost effecitve option I have. Newcastle may tempt me if they offer me a place but at this point it looks like im set for hull uni.

I have been accepted onto 2 courses.

The first is computer science + games development with industrial experience.

The second is creative music technology + business managment.

The moment I was accepted into the music course I figured I had made my mind up, but now im not so sure. I dont know what oppurtunities that is going to give me in life. I cant help but feel that courses like music are basically piss takes.

I say that because our most recent music assignment at college is to remake a theme tune of a cartoon from the 60s (I am doing the flintstones).

Yes, to get my A-level I am re making the flintstones theme tune.

If thats how they teach music at college, what am I supposed to expect from the universities? Even with the business management I still cant help but think I woudl regret choosing the music course sometime in the future.

With my computer science + games development however, I think I may have a chance at giving myself career oppurtunities. I dont know if thats just wishful thinking or not. Guess paul will have to help me out with that one considering he did a similar course but all I know is that computer science sounds impressive to me. Surely there is alot of demand for people who are good with computers.

The music course is based out of town, meaning I would have to get train every day to get to it, whereas the computer course is at the main campus and easy to get too.

Struggling to make a decision tbh. Got some open days to go to but its going to have to be decision time soon.

Well naturally I'd say CS because that's what I'm going for (well, Software Engineering technically, but they're VERY SIMILAR). But that WOULD be the much more secure choice. Computer science is one of the few fields that has tons of new jobs opening and the starting salary is generally pretty great.

If you'd RATHER do music, though... that's a tough choice. All the money in the world won't make you happy if you don't like what you're doing. I guess it depends how CONFIDENT you are in your musical ability. It's good that you'd at least get sum business training. It's so much harder to get a secure income with music/arts though

Computer science is definitely the most secure choice all round, in the short term and the long term. I can keep my job and stay at home, and it also bodes well for my future.

Im sure if I went with the music course I would love it. I would meet lots of musicians and get to work in a proper studio on a reuglar basis, and im sure the business lessons would come in handy. But its a question of whether I will leave uni with any prospects.

I've discovered that games development is hard as hell to break into but having a general software development background and studying computers pretty much guarantees you employment. This may be wishful thinking but I doubt I will ever be out of work unless I choose to be. There are just so many jobs going.
yeah, sorry i speak the truth and besides, i know more about global politics than everyone on this board put together.

There is a future but you have to have the right connections. It's harder to break into than computer science.

It has a future in new media but the market is so diverse and changeable that it's difficult to peg anything down. Computers on the other hand, stay computers.

Oh my god. I was at scarborough campus today for an open day. Just got back.

The music subject has this big house all to itself, think it used to be a hotel, or at least thats the impression I got when inside.

There must have been tens of thousands of pounds in there. They had practically anything you could have thought of and more.

Im just hoping that the computer science course impresses me more, otherwise ive got a hard choice on my hands.

I should also note that my aspirations with doing this music course arent fuelled by some BS delusions of becoming a millionaire rock star. I did the sensible thing with this course and selected business management as an extra to go alongside. A sort of plan B. There are still many oppurtunities within the industry other than becoming an artist.

If I went with this subject though, it would mean moving to Scarbourough. I like the place and would probably consider it after today. I would have to give up my part time job though. Still, with the hours I have been doing recently, I dont think I would mind too much.

I also worry that im just pissing my future away. I know already that I would enjoy the music course more than the computer science one. Aint much that is going to change that. But music just seems to be a joke subject at college, and I hope it isnt the same at uni. The investment in equipment suggests not but still. Its not like there is many success stories from people who went on the course.
