Though I don't expect this thread to hold any kind of appeal without davidtoms, Leah or ack around maybe we can still get a discussion going this time.

Praise be to Xenu!

I open this religion thread, and there's the scientology.org advertisement at the bottom. Creepy little fuckers...

Aaaaanyway, throughout history, religions have mostly been used to either explain things that couldn't be explained at the time, or just to control the masses. Some have been used to make money (hello Scientology!), and, I guess, some have been around to provide enlightenment.

I used to go a primary Christian school, so I learnt all the prayers, songs, stories and naturally I just believed in it. Wasn't until secondary school I started to question my faith, when I was surrounded by others who actually wasn’t religious, now I believe most of the bible is just bullshit. Of course there’s some sort of power much greater than us, because life didn’t happen by accident. We, nature and animals are so complex and beautiful; it just has to be made by something a hell lot more powerful than us.

That depends on the country you're in. I think in Germany, Belgium and Australia, it's being regarded as a cult, and has even been investigated by authorities. In the US, they are seen as a religion. Mostly by their own members, but with their celebrity centers and endorsers, they are pretty much established as an accepted mainstream religion.

Of course, there's no official government stamp for official religions (with that whole First Amendment standing in the way). But, the IRS has given them tax exempt status, which proves to them that they are indeed a religion. Your local little league team is probably also a tax exempt organisation, but they don't mention that part when their validity as a religion is being questioned.

This really. Just because there's no explanation doesn't mean that it's mystical, it just means we don't understand it. Not that I really have a valid opinion on the whole God dilemma. If there exists a higher power it certainly doesn't involve itself in this universe.

That can be debated. There are billions of galaxies, with billions of stars, with billions of planets. Those numbers are so great, a human brain can't make sense of it. Our planet was just the 'just right' planet in our galaxy. It's almost naive to think that we're the only planet that has life on it.

But, the human brain always tries to find meaning/patterns. Mostly, it's hindsight bias and confirmation bias. Actually read an interesting article on that subject today, about the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy:

"The fallacy gets its name from imagining a cowboy shooting at a barn. Over time, the side of the barn becomes riddled with holes. In some places there are lots of them, in others there are few. If the cowboy later paints a bullseye over a spot where his bullet holes clustered together it looks like he is pretty good with a gun.

By painting a bullseye over a bullet hole the cowboy places artificial order over natural random chance.

If you have a human brain, you do this all of the time. Picking out clusters of coincidence is a predictable malfunction of normal human logic."

I can accept our planet is like a billion in one shot, but still just space itself is amazing and way too clever. Some greater being must have created it.

It's not so much clever as just moving along about it's business really. It's no more clever than a train.

I agree, Robman. I consider myself to be christian, however I have a lot of problems with churches and the people who attend them. In my opinion, going to church does not make you a christian, it's through your actions that define that. I'm more on the spiritual side of things, it's just kind of hard sometimes because a lot of stuff in the bible I disagree with. Gay people going to hell? No, I don't buy it. I don't believe in a God that would send a homosexual person to hell, just for being gay. I believe people are born gay, and I don't believe that you have to do this, or that, to be a good person. I also hate the judgemental christians, which is one of the first rules of being a good christian, do not judge! An old friend of mine quit being my friend because I was friends with Tricia, well she finally told me that she didn't like Tricia because she didn't believe in God. Some people, huh? I just try to go through life making good decisions, being there as much as possible for my family and friends, and loving, not hateful. If that isn't enough, well, then I'm not sorry for the way I live.
