"When the war of the beasts brings about the worlds end!"

As he stood there within central park, Ken'ichi couldn't help but have a sinking feeling. There was some form of shift out there and he couldn't figure out what was going on. Whatever it was, Rekka was having a field day. He couldn't get it to shut up half of the time, but now it was getting louder and louder. His hand stroked across the tattoo on his right forearm, his eyes looking on ahead at the trees of the beautiful park that he stood within. A breeze passing by him caused goosebumps to form across his bare arms, uncovered by the deep blue t-shirt he wore. For the first time in a week or so he didnt have a drink on him, and he had left his cigarettes at home. Boy was he going to regret that decision. His left hand rose to slide gently through his short brown hair as he took a deep breath of the stagnant air. He began walking slowly past the shuffling people within the park, some pushing prams others with their dogs doing their business on the grass. He smiled at the silent innocence of it all. It was refreshing to see people feeling so free, walking around feeling safe in the knowledge that they wouldnt die before they got him. If only he could feel the same, he would give anything to be able to walk about as if nothing was going on, but he knew differently, he knew something was going to happen even if he didn't know what it was. The demon would not be speaking to him like it was right now if there wasn't something about to happen. Walking over to a hotdog vendor he order one with onions and ketchup, smiling politely as he handed over the money for the food, before taking it in his hand taking a huge bit out of it. mmm This is the best hot dog Ive had in weeks Using a napkin to whip the ketchup off the light stubble on his chin. Looking to the sky as he walked away from the vendor, seeing birds flying in the sky in a strange formation. That was a bad sign, animals could usually tell when something bad was going to happen well before any human would be able to notice anything. This is going to be a long day He couldnt shake the feeling that something big was about to happen, something that he would have no control over, and it definitely had something to do with the demon that was residing within his wrists. That meant it had to be evil, and it would be very very bad for the place he called home. For earth. But what could he do? He still hadnt decided what his place on this planet was. His left hand brought the hot dog to his lips once more; taking the final bite out of his snack, throwing the wrap it had came in into a bin as he walked swiftly towards the entrance to the park. |

The birds chipped away at the sky with their songs of flight, scattering from one tree or another, flocking to any remaining food on the grounds below. Whatever the feeling Ken'ichi was getting, whatever the reason, it had yet to present itself. The day however, seemed to flow onward, unchanged and unaware of anything besides their day to day lives. A father threw a ball to his small child of a son, a women sat on a bench not to far away chatting with a man of equally young age, giving a small coy laugh known to lovers quirks. An old man walked past the trashcan as Ken'ichi threw away his waste, it was a peaceful day, well, as peaceful as a regular day perhaps. It wasn't too warm out, there was a slight chilling breeze that happened by, nothing out of the ordinary. When he had finally made his way to the park entrance, Ken'ichi would likely hear a small shrill cry from the ground below. Far, far down, hardly something to notice if not for its small stand off with the towering 'human' in front of it. Was a small kitten, its snow white whiskers and patches along its body were contrasted with shades of ebony and caramel. Its big green feline eyes looking upward at the increasingly closer foot of Ken'ichi. Unless he took notice of the young animal soon, he would likely end up stepping or tripping over it.

His eyes rose to watch a flock of birds fly off over his head, releasing a gentle sigh as he leaned against the barrier, his head resting firmly against his hand. He watched the ball that the father and child where thrown to one and other, and the conversing woman. He wished he had time to just relax like that, but he had never been given the chance, hell he didn’t think he had even been granted the chance in his past life. All he had ever wanted to do is make captain and just chill out, be his own person for a while. Looking at the couple he had realized he had never even been given the chance to love anyone, which was a depressing thought. He closed eyes for a moment as he tried to gather his thoughts. Just as he was getting into a state of inner calm he heard a shrill, his eyes opening quickly as he looked out towards where he the noise came from only to notice a small cat in front of him. Lifting his leg so as not to stand on it he tripped and fell, landing hard against the ground, hitting his head against a trash can. As he rubbed his head he looked back at the kitty, and smiled “here kitty kitty!” |

The events that unfolded had not gone unnoticed by anyone close enough to see them, although Ken'ichi likely would have rather they had. A women strolling a baby stroller walked by, and her young daughter who walked beside her watched the downed Ken'ichi, tugging her mother's shirt she posed the question. "Mommy why is that man..." Before her mother quickly hushed her and continued on, if Ken'ichi were to pay any further attention toward the two he would notice that the mother had responded as. "Don't stare...the little delinquent." A few other people had taken notice, but were either too far to hear or payed him no mind. Even though Ken'ichi held a friendly disposition toward the small animal, the sudden rattling of the trashcan seemed to spook the furry critter. Turning away from Ken'ichi, the unwitting kitty began to scurry its way in the other direction...however, the only thing that awaited the kitten in said direction were the busy streets of NY. And just as the kitten were making its way toward those streets, the light turned green and cars began to drive directly for the small, and likely unnoticed cat! There was still time for Ken'ichi to react, however if he didn't do something to stop the kitten from its wandering, it was highly likely it would soon be crushed by one of the oncoming vehicles! |

He looked up with a goofy smile towards the boy, scratching the back of his head knowing how foolish he must have looked right there and then. Slowly he got to his feet, paying very little attention to the mothers response to the kid. He partly knew what it would be anyway so felt no need to pay any attention to her insults towards his appearance. He dusted himself off and looked to see if he could find the cat that had caused the incident. His eyes shot open as he saw the cat dashing across the busy road and launched himself quickly after it running through the crowd towards the street, bumping business men and other people out of the way before diving down to grasp the cat and performing the best diving roll he could possibly muster across the road, which of course ended with him resting upside down against a wall. It seemed that Ken'ichi had caused a bit more of a scene for himself, as he bumped past one, two, maybe even three individuals before reaching the kitten. One of the men, who had been reading a newspaper while walking had nearly dropped said paper, and all three glared at Ken'ichi with an array of annoyance. However all eyes were glued on the boy as he ran for the oncoming traffic, perhaps secretly, the reason behind their new found interest in him was to see him die. A younger looking boy, who in appearance looked to be just a bit younger than Ken'ichi, nothing more than a teenager himself, pulled out a mobile phone and looked as if he were waiting for Ken'ichi to get hit by a car so that he could record, or even take a picture of it. The seconds would have likely drown everything else out, the despise in their eyes, the contempt in their comments, Ken'ichi had made the choice to try and save the kitten from its weak willed fate. Of course, he was faster than the small scurrying animal, and soon caught up with its actions. Grasping the kitten, Ken'ichi went into a diving roll, and just barely avoided the skidding sounds of a truck behind him. The sounds of beeping horns soon followed, along with yelling drivers, no one else appeared to care as much for the small animals life... Landing across the street, Ken'ichi ended up resting against the wall of a building. The kitten wiggled its head up into view of Ken'ichi, looking up to him with its big feline eyes, it went to give the bottom of his chin a lick, apparently not as afraid of the young Ken'ichi as it had been when the trash can fell over. However, now that he was across the street, Ken'ichi would likely begin to notice a sound he hadn't heard prior... It was faint, which would explain why he hadn't picked up on it before, or perhaps it was because he had made such a death defying stunt, but in the distance was the sound of a women's voice. It appeared to be coming from behind Ken'ichi, down the alleyway to his right perhaps? Wherever it was coming from, she appeared to be pleeding to an unknown attacker, struggling to protect herself maybe!? Her voice was frantic, as she cried out for help, however, no one else appeared to hear her, or perhaps it would be better to say, they didn't appear to want to lift a finger to find out or help her with whatever was wrong... He mentally told himself to apologise to the men he had bumped into on his way to save the kitten. It was generally not his way to be rude but a life was a stake and as always, he wouldn’t let the life be destroyed regardless of how small the spirit was. He was however glad that he had managed to get the kitten before it was killed by a vehicle and turned to smile for the camera’s on him, his hand scratching the back of his head as people had their phone cameras all set on him. What a day, he had left soul society for a break from the pressures that came with being Kido Chief and here he was in the living world getting himself into all manner of situations. He was brought back to reality as he felt the kitten lick his chin in apparent gratitude. “I think I’ll call you Bob, I wonder if Captain Commander would allow us to keep pets up in Soul Society!” He said to the cat before placing him down on the pavement again, kneeling next to it to pet across its back for a moment. His eyes opened wider as he heard the faint pleeding from a feminine voice. He stood up and tried to listen out for where it was coming from. The moment his mind locked on he turned and ran towards where the voice was coming from, his heart pounding as the adrenalin pumped round the gigai, hoping beyond hope that he wouldn’t be too late to save the girl. For the first time since seeing the cat, his mind was going in a completely different direction from protecting that kitten. He dashed down the alley as fast as he could, preparing himself for the upcoming battle he would surely face. |

The kitten gave Ken'ichi an attentive stare, as did the few people who were viewing him with their phones. The young man who had instigated the sudden video attentive nature with his phone, seemed slightly disappointed that Ken'ichi hadn't been hit by a car, and continued on his way down the opposite end of the street. When Ken'ichi had set the kitten down and pet it, the cat nudged against his hand, raising its back as he pet it and giving a small hum of a purr. When he had put his mind more to the sound of the women, Ken'ichi would have noticed that it WAS in fact coming from down the alleyway to his right. He had apparently wasted no time in making his way to figure out the situation more thoroughly, and advanced down the alleyway. As soon as he had turned the corner, he would be able to make out the two figures at the other end. They appeared to be two humans, one female, as portrayed by the voice, and another rather gaunt looking male. The man, who as Ken'ichi got closer would notice was older looking than himself, was pulling on the women's purse with one hand, while roughly trying to push her away with the other. Ken'ichi swiftly made his way down the alley, avoiding trash cans and dumpsters, and during his advance splashed a puddle with one of his feet. The attacker appeared to notice Ken'ichi's lack of stealth, and promptly turned to the fast approach of the new unknown person. Roughly grabbing the women by her jacket, the man practically threw her in Ken'ichi's direction, dropping her purse and attempting to make an escape down the other end of the alley. The women, who in appearance seemed to be somewhere around the age of Ken'ichi's Gigai, tumbled sideways toward the young shinigami. Her foot closest to Ken'ichi twisted roughly against a snag in the ground, and sent the young women falling backwards in Ken'ichi's path. At the current rate of his advance, he would likely be able to get to her and prevent her fall to the ground, however, the attacker was quickly getting to a turn in the alley, and would just as likely manage to slip away if the chase was prevented any longer. |
