As I said elsewhere, the intent of this game was not only to provide us with a little amusement, but to gauge interest in any future automated games with much more detail.

As it stands I think the verdict is that there would be interest, but the game itself needs more built-in events and interaction to hold it. This is a PT clone, and as with PT, engagement falls off after a while. There simply isn't enough to do.

That being the case, I think it might be better to switch to the old WWII idea rather than the 1836 one I had planned. I know I've said this already, but I wanted to get the thoughts of non-Chums members. The plan would be to convert a lot of the rules and systems from HoI and probably use the old HoI 2 map or the Victoria 2 regional one. Forum posting and roleplaying would follow war developments and industrial expansion.

I actually think this would be a lot easier than doing a full 1836 game, because most of it centers on combat, and our combat systems work. Not only that, but a lot of things can be abstracted, like manpower and industry. The WWII game that John and EQ attempted before would have worked had the systems been in place to keep track of everything; we have those now.

The downsides:
- It is more one-dimensional and may not have as much replay value.
- It requires a good player base with steady commitment, although the clock wouldn't move as fast.
- It will be more computationally intensive, which may requires a paid server at some point.

Either way it is theoretical right now, but something I am definitely pondering in my free time.

Well, for my part--and this has a lot more to do with needing a serious programming challenge than any intent otherwise--I am working on an algorithm for a fully-functional AI for these kinds of games. I don't really know what it's going to take, but as I've said before, it is the holy grail of these games in my opinion. I only started seriously working on this just recently, but the complexity has grown exponentially to the point that I have no real sense of whether I can manage to create even a simple AI and how that might compare with some of the worse players we've had over the years. Anyway, it's something. I just have a feeling that when it's all said and done, it's going to be the largest database I've ever created and thousands of lines of code.

I'm not familiar with the HoI or Victoria systems, let alone PT, so am not sure on the programming side of things. I do know about the history and the balance of gaming and for anything around the world wars, there would need to be at least double the amount of players that are currently present.

Here we've got the following active players

Britain: My humble self
USA: Basil
France: Myles
Germany: JBK
Austria-Hungary: Petar
Japan: John
Denmark: John Delmar

On the sidelines, we've got Russia/Eq and Italy/Bob who haven't been active since Christmas, whilst Ford/Ottoman Empire has been away busy for a while. (Mykal as Belgium and Grace as Brazil are still learning the nature of the systems, so I'll set them aside for the moment)

Missing from the line up from this time in 2015 is Chuck, who got into these type of games at one point.

That still only gives 11 chaps of varying levels of experience, commitment and interest. A one-dimensional WW2 or WW1 could be done with full participation, but like all such endeavours, it would be made better by broader and deeper membership.

For WW2, there would need to be a new tech tree, documented in a forum posted factfile; a slight revision of resources and goods; and a slight revision of instability based rebellions, making them less frequent. On top of that, we would need the cattle.

If I had a choice I would want to do a WWII round of the game.

But I will let you guys decide.

WWII games have personally fallen out of favor with me. I'm not saying I wouldn't play; I just don't think they ever turn out well. That is not to say that it can't, but...meh. I don't like the problems that air combat presents and I personally prefer the battleship era.
