well.. i think this bit is the most important:

we'll believe every word you say
truths so hard, we have to look the other way
tongues are tied to what they believe
open eyes are not always able to see

and if you read it carefully a few times.. to me it seems like it's about a group of people... or parents.. or someone else with authority who spread lies... or say things that make people scared.. or suppressed...

being trapped in a bad situation... 'open fire.. the enemy begins'

do i make sense? LOL

Thanks Jella, that makes complete sense! I understand the song so much more now - I hadn't quite got it all to make sense in my head :D I love the idea that they are trapped and being fired at but can't escape. Almost like a dictatorship, but it would also work really well as parents or leaders in general. A bit like Heroes maybe - corrupt leaders...

I was listening to Heroes today and it seems like she's frustrated about a relationship with someone older than her... maybe someone related to her or someone in her business... one or more people. Am I completely off?

Good thinking Jo, you're probably right there. I find her more recent songs harder to explain though: Call Came In is great, but I'm still not sure what it really means to her. ;)

yeh idd... on both of the issues..

i do think heroes has to do with authority.. work wise.. maybe even her manager :P

and call came in is about a darker place she was in? until she found her love again.. or is on better terms with him again... and can open up again? i dunno

^ Haha! Yes she does. I love her lyrics so much though; it's great that they're kind of hard to decipher (sp?) because then they mean something different to everyone.

Yeah I reckon you're right. It's definitely a tricky one though.

Jo, I think you're right on about Heroes - it's maybe against adults (as in parents' generation) in general? Could even be the government (!). It seems to me that we are taught as children to respect adults in authority - "Heroes" - and then as we grow up we start to see their flaws / corruption... I'm confusing myself!! I like "They'd rather say it's too easy than say well done," - that reminds me of things like A level results: if people are getting more A grades, everyone assumes the exams are easier rather than young people are getting smarter LOL  Am probably on completely the wrong track here. Great song though :D

Ooh, and I was thinking about Sing for You, the bit that goes "He is laughing at you, tired of giving." Could that be about her dad? I mean obviously he wouldn't laugh at her because he's lovely, but maybe if she was having a really bad day when she wrote it, after so few people came to hear her sing, and she might have worried she wasn't paying her dad back for all the help he'd given her. A moment of self doubt.

Sorry, am prattling on! I love thinking about song meanings!!
