Vivia Black always met the most people in the unlikeliest of places. Whether this was another curse or merely coincidence, it never failed to annoy her. The Elemental Library was a perfect example. Despite it being a place for solitude, her prior ventures into the room had resulted in nothing but aggravating student encounters. Memories of the last visit flooded back, prompting her to scowl at her own lack of judgment. Wasn't she the one who had called Matsu over to talk in the first place? Vivia could hardly blame a group of curious teenagers to congregate, though their talk of "conspiracy" and whatnot had never ceased to aggravate her since then. That had been a few weeks ago, though, and the fourteen-year-old was certain that nothing would impede her progress today. Her visit to the library was an absolute necessity- a means of catching up academically, not a place to cower from Victoria. Her sister had all but immersed herself at Vishnu Palace as of late, no doubt impressing the rest of the Council with her steadfast "devotion" to the school. The startling lack of activity from Victoria had prompted an eerie calm, one that left Vivia free to her own devices. Now there was pure, hardcore studying to do. Vivia had been so immersed in peer activities that she had all but disregarded the impending threat of a new school year. She was well aware that the academic competition was nothing short of brutal- if anything, her new "friends" had futher reinforced this fact- and the notion of getting set back even further sent new waves of anxiety hammering at her heart. She found herself walking to the Mythology section with new purpose. Social problems or not, Vivia Black couldn't let anything get in the way of her perfect grades. |

Mason scoured the wall of book in front of him. He stood in the Mythology section, wearing the same black cardigan, skinny jeans and tie, along with his white button-up. His eyes flew over the exposed spines of the books, Where is the book for Ho-Oh?!?. He sees the Entei, Latios, and Zapados books, but where was the book about Ho-Oh? He places his bag on the ground, getting ready to have one of his little fits. He drags a stool over to the area he was looking in and began to look at the books that were shelved higher,"Surely to goodness the book has to be here. Ho-Oh is not that popular of a topic." Emotion builds up,"I have to get this book! I have a project about Ho-Oh to work on!" He continues to scan the higher shelves, moving quickly and appearing more flustered. Down below, Daraste, Mason's Chin-Chou, scurries around below, lighting and unlighting his antennae for no particular reason. Edited by Symphony, Oct 11 2009, 05:45 PM.

Three Pokémon there were. Into the lakes they dove. Deep, deep, drawing no breath. Deeper, deeper they dove. Into suffocating depths they dove... The Black repeated the ancient stanzas to herself under her breath, never faltering once over the syllables. The Mythology section in her home library had always been a favorite haunt of hers, and it seemed befitting to start her studying in that section here. Unfortunately, fate had other plans for her. A hurried step into the bookshelves brought her face-to-face with a young man she had never seen before, scouring the line of frayed tomes with an expression she was terribly familiar with. Anxiety. Just watching the student made her stomach twist; such was the intensity of his panic. Normally, Vivia would have turned away. She would have left the boy to his own devices, moving on to some easier subject like Art and eventually forgetting all about the troubled student. But an inner compulsion- empathy, maybe- kept her moving forwards. Deep, deep, drawing no breath... The fourteen-year-old hid her curiosity with a facade of perfect indifference as she studied the bookshelf parallel to the one Mason was near. There was a peculiar arrangement of Johto mythology in that area, and she feigned interest in them for the sake of maintaining her nonchalant appearance. Lugia. Ho-Oh. It was coursework that other classes were studying, but some previewing couldn't hurt. She silently extracted a thin book about Ho-Oh from the shelf, trying not to sneak glances at the strange boy as he searched the rows. Vivia wasn't about to strike up a conversation, but the unfamiliar student's anxiety reminded her of her own. If she were in such a situation, she would have longed for some help. The least she could do was wait and see if he truly needed her assistance. |

Mason stomps his foot lightly in protest: protest of his evident stupidity. With a huff, he steps off the stool and begins to search the very bottom of the shelf he was at. How can there not be a book on Ho-Oh?!? He's argueably the most important Mythological figure in the whole world! And as for Vivia, Mason hears her come and sit down at the table behind him, but doesn't take any interest in her. If he couldn't find the dang book, no one could. The young overachiever sticks his finger out like a pointer and point at each book's spine for exactly 5 seconds; just to make sure that there wasn't something that he was missing. He was going to do this methodically: the only other way that he knew how. He must have missed something, he had to have. He was a master at navigating a library. That was one of his talents. (lol) Needless to say, his face's expression deepened from anxiety to utter incensement. At this point Mason was no longer merely annoyed, he was pissed that he couldn't find a simple book! How difficult could this be?!? Edited by Symphony, Oct 15 2009, 04:21 PM.

Despite her original neutrality about the book she was skimming, Vivia couldn't deny that the subject matter was certainly interesting. She had never been an ardent researcher- she studied for academic success, not because she really loved to learn- but the legends of Ho-Oh definitely commanded her attention. She flipped back to page one and began to actually read the text. It had been a while since she had been engrossed in a book, and she had almost forgotten how nice the immersion felt. Vivia felt herself reverting to classic study mode, mentally taking note of the important facts while attempting to disregard the interesting but ultimately useless details... But her momentary peace was interrupted when the young man before her, anxiety transformed into frustration, gave a huff and stepped off the stool with a loud creak. Vivia's initial empathy vanished; in its stead came a faint annoyance. The fourteen-year-old had always disliked being interrupted in the middle of intensive studying, even though this topic wasn't too important to begin with. She finally considered offering her assistance- after all, this boy wasn't going to leave on his own- but she seriously didn't need another conversation. Mason L'Croix Granville was disregarded for the time being. Vivia went back to her book. Minutes passed, and the other student seemed to be visibly upset. His obvious frustration distracted Vivia so much that she couldn't resist lifting her head, arching an eyebrow at this student's apparent incompetence, and asking an exasperated "What are you looking for?" in the least conversational way possible. Whatever the matter was, it would be resolved soon. If one was looking for something in a library, who better to ask than a librarian's daughter? |

Did somone just say something? Mason pauses from his search for a momment, completely freezing. No response or otherwise sound besides Daraste padding around at his feet. Mason exhales. He could have sworn that he had heard someone. Okay, I have to at least turn around. He quickly spins around, ending up looking straight in the eyes of Vivia. His face becomes full of heat. He hadn't realized that the girl had been there. And he didn't even know how long she had been there, either! She could have been there five seconds after he had begun his search for his book and heard everything. How embaressing! "I . . . uhhhhh-" spews out of his mouth. His blush deepens even more,"Was looki- looking for the book on Ho-Oh."he states, with marginally better confidence. He begins to play with the edges of his cardigan, a nervous habit. He even begins to bite his lips. Who was this person? Why was he so embaressed? She had caught him at a time of weakness. And that was utterly unaccpetable. |

Vivia could relate to being socially awkward, but this student didn't look the type to be inarticulate at all. His appearance already gave him an air of solemnity- the fourteen-year-old could count on one hand how many times she had seen a student wear a tie- and his gaze held an indefinable, sharp intellect. Despite the incoherency of his speech, she felt somewhat intimidated by his presence. Ho-Oh? On instinct, Vivia tightened her grip on the book in her hands. The student seemed in desperate need of the material, but it really was engrossing. It was stupid and petty to take it for herself, but part of her yearned to continue with the studying. This was important material, curriculum Professor Ajax would certainly touch upon, she needed to master this now- No. No, I don't. I'm absolutely paranoid. He needs the book more. She didn't allow herself time to change her mind, instead shutting the book without a word and walking towards Mason. Vivia forced herself to keep her expression blank; the last thing she wanted was a student who intended to converse. She held the book out without a moment's hesitation, occupying her mind with the subjects she intended to pore over next. Philosophy, Medicine... the fourteen-year-old sighed inwardly at the thoughts, realizing that Mythology was the only interesting thing she would study today. |

The eyes of Mason quickly snap to the book that was sbeing thrust upon him. He looks directly down at the book and his face begins to soften, taking a less stressed-out appearance. His hand extends to grasp the book and quickly does so. There is a hint of hesitation, solely resting on the awkward expression that the girl had. "Thank you. I have a project to complete about Ho-Oh . . . "he says trailing off, flipping lightly through the pages of the book itself. His head quickly snaps up from it,"Are you sure that you aren't done?"he asks coldy. That was awfully rude . . . she actually looked like she might have been enjoying the book . . . like I might. I need to talk to this girl. She might be a student with some sanity. He quickly straightens his tie and clears his throat to speak again, this time looking her dead in the eyes,"We could read it together . . . "he says awkwardly,"I only need to gather the most minute information about the believed origins of Ho-Oh." Edited by Symphony, Oct 18 2009, 06:20 PM.

Some of Vivia's inital uneasiness ebbed away after Mason regained his composure. She couldn't help but let her gaze linger on his fingers as he flipped through the book, though, letting the implications of his words sink in. A project to complete about Ho-Oh... So this student was in a class that was already assigning coursework? Vivia couldn't help but feel a pang of competitive drive, already identifying the young man as an academic threat. The fourteen-year-old was driven out of her thoughts when Mason's blue eyes settled on hers. "Are you sure that you aren't done?" He questioned, leaving the adolescent at a typical loss for words. Without waiting for an answer, the boy hastily straightened his tie and affixed his attention back on her as quickly as it had been averted. "We could read it together..." Vivia Black had no idea what compelled her to nod almost imperceptibly in response. Maybe it was genuine interest in the book's contents; maybe she was simply taking an opportunity to identify the nature of her competition. But the fourteen-year-old rationalized that she had nothing better to do with her study time, using that simple notion as an excuse for the slight curiosity she was taking in Mason. From what she could tell, he was just as focused on academics as she was. There was a certain air to him that suggested as much, but she knew she couldn't judge by appearances alone. Still, it didn't seem like she would lose much from studying with him... if anything, it would get her ahead in Mythology, right? And there was still a small desire to meet someone a little more like herself. A small desire. |

Steely blue eyes scan the 14 year old girl, looking for possible weaknesses or signs to give her true feelings away. All that he saw was a nod. A nod? What was she nodding about . . . ? No. She couldn't have. She absolutely couldn't have accepted his offer to read the book with him. What were they . . . second graders? This was disastrous. His attempt to rid himself of this girl while being slightly poilte had taken flight and crashed miserably right in front of him. His mouth couldn't move. It was useless for the moment. Heat rushes across his face rapidly and against his will. Why was this happening to him? He was Mason L'Croix Granville, damnit. Where had his excessive confidence and cockiness now? Evidently it has deserted him like Benedict Arnold had in the Revolutionay War of America. But why? Was it the fact that this girl seemed as though she could actually compete with him intellectually? Yes, he answers himself without a beat of thought. He best do something, anything, to even begin to salvage himself from this encounter. And he best to it quickly. "Let's sit, then!"he suggests rather forcfully, not really leaving Vivia much room to comment. He briskly walks past her and to the table that Vivia had only just left and seats himself rather quickly. He more throws the large, National-Geographicesque book on the table and quickly turns to his desired chapter. Then, looking quickly back at Vivia, Mason smiles and waves for her to come and join him, even pulling out the seat next to him for her to seat herself in,"Come on! Let's get our noses in this thing!"he says with verve. Maybe if I speed this up, I'll be able to get what I need done and get out of here, he quickly says inside his mind. But immediately after a pang of regret filled his body. Why was he acting so strangely? Why couldn't he just be himself? It was something to do with her. Vivia. Well. Somebody's certainly enthusiastic. Vivia kept an unfazed demeanor as she followed Mason to his table of choice. She could catch a glimpse of uncertainty in his gaze- as if he had simply extended the offer as a polite way to get rid of her- and now felt all the consequences of accepting this proposal crashing back down again. She repressed a sigh when she saw him pull a seat out for her. Too late to back out now, right? Steeling her will and forcing herself not to run, Vivia walked over and sat next to Mason with an air of hesitance. Though it seemed as if he took little interest in her compared to the book, it was situations like this that made the fourteen-year-old feel more self-conscious than ever. She was aware that yes, she was just inches away from an adolescent boy she had just met, and that yes, she had the potential of looking fantastically ignorant in front of somebody who seemed so well-read... But it was the studying she was after. She trained her eyes on the chapter Mason had flipped to, reading the words but never once absorbing their meanings. It was so difficult to concentrate when she knew somebody else was there; he might be watching and maybe judging her every movement, already labelling her as incompetent. It was a paranoia that had been instilled in her by years of Victoria's scrutiny. Even now, it filled her with unease. Vivia watched Mason out of the corner of her eye as she pretended to scan the page. He possessed an aura of perfect aloofness and calm, a countenance that slightly intimidated her. She wondered if he was just like her- just devoted to studying, really- or another one of those geniuses that walked the halls of EA. Either way, it wasn't doing much for her at that point. |
