As Anna's hood fell down to reveal her face, Ki'ehr eyed the scar worriedly. She was lucky that it had not been more of her neck that had been cut. What happened to you, Anna? he thought. He looked at her face - her perfect, young face - and then back at the scar. What have you been forced to do?

He continued trudging through the snow, hoping that Anna's tongue wouldn't loll out if she fainted and freeze to his armour. He turned his head as if shielding his eyes from the snow to hide the smile that grew across his face as he thought of the consequences and then composed himself quickly. He looked ahead at the town again, wondering if he should call out for help before she really did freeze to his chest, but then thought better of it.

He turned to Een instead. "Een, would you mind going into the town and getting some help out here? The sooner we all get out of this blizzard, the better. And if there's any trouble, just run back out and call my name. I'm sure that once they see our situation, they might reconsider tearing us limb from limb." That is, if they're human.

Soudrima frowned as she realized the other woman's ears were suddenly cold that her hood had flopped off. The wind could be quite biting which was why her own hood was still snugged cozily about her head. The bard rubbed her fingers and looked to the draconian attentively as he began his request.

Oh! Sure thing, Ki'ehr! A bard always gets a pleasant reception even in unfriendly towns. But first, let me help you with Anna's hood. Her deft fingers curled the woman's hair towards her head as she scooped up the hood with the other hand and tugged it back into place with a gentle movement, pinioning the piece of fabric between Anna's head and Ki'ehr's chest so it would not fall out of place again. Perhaps the woman's frizzy hair would be a bit more disorderly, but the bard figured that a warm head is better than unmessy hair regardless of the consequences.

The elven woman took to the snow then, her light feet crunching on the icy layer of snow without breaking through. The town was still a bit off, but she ran for it.

As she looked at the town, it was obvious now that she was closer that there were fires and candles lit even through the storm and that her best place to look for help would be an inn or tavern. It was a small town to say the least so the biggest building was her obvious choice. As it turned out, that was exactly what it was. The Winsome Inn was a homely building, but sturdy. The wooden sign by the door swung madly in the wind. The bard pushed into the door, her cloak flinging aside as she made it in, immediately warmed by the strong fire cooking in the hearth.

I need help! My friends are still out in the snow and one is near the point of freezing. Please help me! The dwarves around a table looked at her in startlement. The snow that had pushed in with her had also brought the breeze. Everyone shuddered. The innkeeper who stood attentively at the bar, frowned a little. I'm a bard. I will play for you tonight if you would be so kind as to give us aid and a room no matter the condition. Even a little food for so small a band as we would be a kindness beyond all that I will personally advertise for while I am in the north and even in my own home in City Randatria! Please!

The innkeep nodded. Randatrian advertising would come a long way. A free ale to all who help the girl out. Soudrima bowed as she righted her cloak and hood and came marching back towards Anna and Ki'ehr with her small band of dwarves. As they could not move as fast as a longer legged race, they were coming, but it would take a little bit of time.

Ki'ehr watched Een run off into the distance and kept walking until she returned into view. He saw a couple of short figures inching towards him, and he put his head down in hopelessness. They're dwarves, he thought. Levo, grant me strength. He looked up again, and had to think of something before they got here and he wasted more time.

"Maybe they could clear the snow..." he muttered to himself, thinking. If he ran through the snow like this, he'd probably trip and smother them both with snow. But if they could at least clear some of the path...

"I need you to clear some of the snow!" he yelled through the blizzard to the dwarves. "Just use whatever you have!"

Soudrima kept her hood pulled down low as they walked into the wind in an attempt to get back to the two still trudging towards the town. It was thankful that it wasn't that far to go. The bard and the five dwarves and one sled moved onwards. The dwarves, it seemed, were immune to the cold. It was probably the fire warm ale in their bellies and their faces full of beard. The high elf had little in common with the face covering and the warm stomach. She would sing for her supper as always.

She listened as Ki'ehr shouted at the bunch of them, taking a while to try to comprehend it with the wind blowing as it was. It was one of the dwarves that heard him first.

Did'e say "I need beer up ta me nose"? It was the yellow bearded fellow in the fur lined armor beside her on the left.

An then he said "Just gimme whate'er you have." Sounds like he's a bi' less picky now, aye? It was the dwarf on the right with a fierce beard of orange shot through with white and an eye patch on his right eye. Soudrima just smiled and shrugged.

We'll get the baggage on the sled and then 'e'll be able ta move faster, aye? It was the one behind her with his beard braided and a brass ring in his ear who pulled the sled which was little more than a large plank on metal runners.

He's carrying a woman named Anna. She's suffering from what appears to be exposure. She's not baggage so please be careful. Ki'ehr should, hopefully, be able to carry himself until we get back to the inn.

Aye, lassie. Na problem. We're professional haulers.

Miners, Oren. We're miners, na haulers.

Aye, miners tha do the hauling. The whole troupe laughed heartily as they neared.

They reached Ki'ehr and his burden. Soudrima gave him a wave and flapped her arm toward the sled pulled by Mr. Braided Beard, or so she liked to think of him as. Ki'ehr, put Anna on the sled. There's enough room for her there so you won't have to lift her anymore and then we can run back to the inn if you're up for it. The sled also had a couple of thick furs on top of it so they could bury the rider in as much warmth as they could for the journey back to the Winsome Inn. I've arranged for a room and some food for us when we arrive. We should be able to get warm in no time. The bard smiled as the dwarves began to remove the sled furs in preparation to have Anna board it before covering her with them to keep her from freezing until they got back into town.

"Oh, a sled," Ki'ehr said, rushing towards the it and placing Anna down on it gently. "Hadn't noticed that. Glad someone here thought this through." The dwarves placed the furs over Anna and Ki'ehr began to stretch his arms. He heard one of the plates of his spaulders crack and hoped it was just ice, and not part of the metal.

Food, a room and saving a poor helpless girl from death. Now these people deserve to go to heaven at the world's end. I must remember to talk about Levo at our residence. He continued to walk alongside the sled and the dwarves, needing to make sure she was still alright. It wasn't that he didn't trust the dwarves, it was just that he didn;t trust the blizzard, or the beasts that might be laying in wait.

Ki'ehr then turned to Een. "You're a saviour. Even a paladin needs a guardian angel, it would seem." He looked at the horn that she had used before, and then back at her face. "I see you are a bard. I look forward to hearing you play tonight. That is, if you will grant me the honour."

The bard was pleased to see that everything was working adequately even in the unfavorable weather as Anna was bundled up on the sled. The woman was probably quite bewildered by the whole experience. Perhaps she had come out to the frozen country to die... Her love had decided to leave her and she was not strong enough to make it on her own. How sad! Or... She was trying to find her family's holding, but this unexpected storm picked up and swept her off course, leaving her fighting for her life in the drift. Very tragic. Or she was a traveling swordswoman... maybe? She does seem to have some weapons. And while she was traveling, she was kidnapped by savage bandits that captured her and ravished her, leaving her for dead out in the snow when they were done with her. Rather crude and she has no marks on her really other than the red face problem. Brrr, so cold. I can't wait to warm up my hands again. Else how can I play tonight?

Two of the sturdy dwarves each grabbed a lead rope to the sled and began to pull the contraption back to town. The other three walked alongside, flanking it as well as keeping eyes out for any danger. Soudrima noticed the strategy right away. It was good that all of them had a mallet, a pickaxe, a regular axe, or some sort of large smashy-smash weapon attached to their persons somewhere, usually on their backs. They were an effective team to say the least and were already making good time with Anna in tow.

As Ki'ehr talked to her, the elven woman smiled at the relatively pink lizardman. Ki'ehr, I'm certainly no one's savior. You just happened to get lucky. She brushed aside his compliments for she was certain she was no angel or savior or guardian of any sort. And I did tell you that I was a bard when we met, not so long ago. Besides, how else would we be getting food and a place to lay our heads tonight if I didn't sing for our supper? As long as my fingers warm quickly, I expect my playing to be quite nimble. Onwards or we'll lose our team of dwarves at their pace! She chuckled and then dashed lightly through the snow to catch up to the sled so as to give Anna at least somewhat of a "familiar" face near her in case she suddenly decided to panic at everything that was going on. Or if she fainted, Soudrima could make sure that she didn't fall off the sled as the dwarves weren't paying that much attention to what was on the sled as opposed to what might be coming towards it. Thank the gods that the Winsome Inn wasn't that far away.

A fever started to ravage common sense from her mind and the faces and time all started to blur together. One moment she was being held, the next she was being draped with furs and carried off. The light rocking motion of the sled tilting and swaying with the bumps and dips in the snow slowly put her to sleep. Despite her non-stop shivering, the fever caused a cold sweat to break over her body and her dreams were wrestless.

Anna was back in the alleyway. Her lungs didn't seem to be pulling in enough air as she paused when her attackers did. Her knuckles were aching from the hits she managed to get in and her own dagger had flown across to the other stone wall. Four burley men were in her line of sight, halfway stunned that this child of a girl could manage to actually punch each of them in the face and one in the gut. One man was even on his knees with his dark, large hands cupping his 'family jewls.' The woman's blood was singing with adrenalin. She had to stay alive and get out of this. Her parents would be worried that she wasn't home yet.

The leader of the gang of bullies took one step towards her and she crouched again. But he bent to pick up her knife. While he was down, he lunged, feinting to the side and managing to get behind her. She tried to leap foward, but the blade dug into her shoulder and she cried out in pain. Anna turned, trying to get away from the weapon, only causing it to slice up over her shoulder and up her neck. She barely got out of harms way when she was grabbed again. The girl fumbled for her other dagger. It was a great deal smaller but she jammed it into the man's side. His gasp was feirce. "YOU BITCH!" He yelled at her and hoisted her up and threw her at the wall. The world went black.

Beyond her dream, her sleeping form was restless and she whimpered in pain.

Ki'ehr jogged through the snow towards the sled and was about to resume his conversation with Een when Anna started whimpering. He looked down at what he could see beneath the fur and saw that she was asleep. Again, he wondered what was going on inside her head. He worried about her for a moment and then knew that everything would be fine once they reached the town.

Even though the worry had left him, curiosity filled his mind. Why was this girl wearing such things in a blizzard? Why was she here? Did the scar have anything to do with it? Am I saving a killer? Ki'ehr thought slowly. His brow creased as if deciding what would be the right choice, but he quickly shook it off. All deserve a chance for repentance. Leaving her to die here would be damning her - even after life.

He considered waking her as the whimpering continued, but then thought it best that she get as much rest as possible. It may be hell mentally, but physically, she depserately needed it.

The dream repeated and repeated as if begging her to remember. But finally she woke with a strong shiver. She looked up with terrified eyes not really knowing where she was. The faces and places started to come back as she saw Ki'ehr and Een. Anna looked down at the fur that was starting to warm her. It then occured to her that she wasn't shivering as frequently as before. Her voice sounded raw as she spoke. "Are we.." She caughed to clear it. "Are we almost there?" She was surprised to sound that her voice sounded younger than normal, as if she were that injured teen again. It was the first time in the life she remembered that she had ever felt so vunerable around others. Normally she wasn't as worried or scared becaus she knew she could easily slip away. But this time, the woman was trapped by a blizard and needed help.

Of course she'd been sick before, but not like this. She reached up to feel her scar, it was stinging as if it were fresh and seemed more agitated than normal. But as she tried to remember why, the dream faded away. The scar was a few years old now and shouldn't be paining her. It's just the fever.. She tried to tell herself.

Ki'ehr was broken out of his unusually silent trance by Anna's cough. He looked ahead to see how far they were from the town and then turned back to Anna. "Yes, Anna. We're nearly there." Soon after, he took his first steps into the town. His leather boots tapped on the hard path as he stepped and he noticed that everything was covered in snow or sleet. He began taking the furs off Anna's body and thanked the dwarves as they helped.

They had stopped by the Winsome Inn, as Ki'ehr could tell from the snow-stricken sign outside that hung above it's door. "Are you alright to walk?" he asked, hoping that he would not have to carry her into the inn. He smiled at the consequences of such a thing, although this time he made no effort to hide it.
