Do Not Use Snaplink!; DC rule change
Topic Started: November 28, 2008, 11:21 pm (5,944 Views)
BIll the Llama

Here's a hint, folks: Games like DC are pretty much designed to get people to look at ads. TJ makes money off of ad sales. If a person uses something like Snaplinks to open up a crapload of tabs/windows and then closes them all, TJ probably doesn't get credit for the ad being "viewed" and doesn't get the money from it.

I'm not saying that there's anything nefarious going on, but server space takes money, bandwidth takes money, and TJ's time is also worth something. No individual clicks means no ads. No ads means no money. No money means no reason for TJ to continue the game.

Well, I don't use SnapLinks, so I don't worry about it... But I was just about to put my eggs into the hatchery today when I heard about this.... And here I used the tried-and-true Ctrl+Click way that I learned from someone here. Is that similar to SnapLinks?

is this why the automated hatchery isn't working?

Possibly. TJ warned that if snaplinks continued to be used after he "asked us nicely" to stop using it that he would take action against it.

Personally, I'll miss using snaplinks to click the hatchery... but rules are rules. If we can't trust our members to follow them, this hatchery site may go away completely.

Click them! ...you know you want to!

Personally, I don't see this as a problem. Since I've no idea of how snaplinks work or are set, I've been clicking eggs one by one since I started in this game, and I can assure you that clicking 100 or so eggs for day doesn't take so much time, especially if you use Firefox.

It sucks. It makes sense. Like many things in this world, add this to the list of 'back in /my/ day' reminiscing stories and either work with it or stop playing. But honestly, I think all of us SL users can agree that this is an unfortunate outcome, but what's more unfortunate is having to stare at a page full of "This site has been banned from using DC images" posters. So, guys, let's roll with the punches.

Nnnnnnnnnnnnn.. Not happy about this.

There's that quota that we have to do, but having to click egg after egg when you don't have the time for it? Highly frustrating.

Don't get me wrong, I love this site, but.. :/ Do we really have to meet a quota?

All you have to do is hold the ctrl button down while clicking and it opens in a new tab in Firefox. I can click 100 in a couple of minutes, and I do click slowly. Then I just close the whole browser window. It's easy and it doesn't choke the DC servers.

TJ could -eliminate- the server strain caused by mass-clicking.

Eliminate clicks as having any effect on dragon growth.

If he wanted to be nice, he could also reduce the number of views/unique views required for a dragon to grow.

He won't do that because, contrary to everyone who has been loudly proclaiming otherwise, it's not a 'free' site. We don't pay for it (except for those who choose to donate using the paypal button), but there are ads -everywhere-.

Eliminating his server strain would also eliminate most of his ad views.

Hmm, the only I thing I do that may relate to a snaplink is click on the dragon with my middle mouse button.

Is that a snaplink?
Currently hunting for: Male Spilt dragon and Silver egg. Possibly any other rare.

Dang, my computer's so slow...T_T

No, that is not a snaplink. A snaplink is an add-on for Firefox that allows you to open hundred's of tabs at once.

Isn't the auto hatchery here just one giant "snap link"? When you open the hatchery doesn't it query the DC site to load all those thousands of dragon images all at once? I just assumed that was why it was being banned.

Nae's out on an errand. Would you like to leave a message?
Quite honestly, I can understand not using Snaplinks anymore. It made FF crash on me several times anyway... >_< I admit, this rule does suck epically, especially with the quota. But what can we do about it? TJ can't do anything else to reduce lag, so he's having to cut down on some of the conveniences. Imagine trying to keep up with the server strain on a site that he is having to pour his own money into to keep going. As for me, I can live without SL if it means that DC stays. It's the cost of growth. (Have you seen how many people are viewing any part of the site at any given time? It's usually upward of 800 people, 1k now with the new autumn eggs.)
Hatchling and eggie-palooza (Changed to UniCreatures since DC images are spazzy)~

Well, I suppose that explains why all the links were scrolls instead of eggs for a while. o.O;

Then you are going to have a lot of unhappy people if you ban snaplinks, why the hell should any of us spend endless days clicking eggs to meet the quota you decided on
Then those people should take a moment to realize that they are being 'unhappy' about someone setting terms for the free service that the hatchery is providing them with, in order to _assist_ them with DC, which is another free service provided for them. Perhaps then they'll realize exactly how petulant and spoiled they sound when they whine about having to follow the rules to receive their free services.

And it takes about five minutes to click a hundred dragons, so your 'endless days clicking' is ridiculously melodramatic. You open the page. You put your finger over the 't' key. Right-click your mouse on any picture, then hit 't'. This will open the link in a different tab, but leave you where you were. Move over, repeat. Rightclick-t. Rightclick-t. Click-tap. Click-tap. It takes about a second. Then afterward, it may take another thirty seconds to close the tabs you opened, but that's about it.

Amen.

Honestly, all this drama about not being able to use snap link is ridiculous. You play his game, therefore his rules. You don't like it? Then leave. It's that simple. He gave a perfectly reasonable explanation for why he had to ban snap linking, and I can see no fault with it.

On that note, how hard is it to click for at least 20/day? Keep doing that for a week, and you actually have 40 excess click on your automated counter. And yes, clicking for 100 times is perfectly doable. Even if you only spend 30 minutes in the internet, you can still click about 30 to 40 easy. You do it all the time in your mad clicking spree to get rare eggs in the dragon site, why is the hatchery clicking quota any different?

To the person who asked do we have to meet the quota, if you don't want to, go right ahead and don't do it. But please be fair to the clickers and inform us you don't click, just view. I'm sure plenty would be happy to just 'view' your eggs and not click it, while they click those users who likewise are more than happy to meet the quota themselves.

That's my opinion. You can argue it, but again, why bother? The amount of time you click the keys on the keyboards would have been better spent clicking those eggs and getting your quota.

Edit: -sigh- And I just checked the hatchery. Darn it. >.> Well, here's hoping it all clears up soon. Weezee and the rest of her mods, I'm more than happy to back up any decision/ideas you have for the place <3

Okay, to the people saying use ctrl or t to open multiple windows fast, you should consider this. You do too many at once, it's not much better then SL.

Well Snaplinks doesn't mean anything to me...I've NEVER even heard of it.

So I guess I'm not missing out on anything then.

Wish we knew whats goin on with the hatchery & when it'll be fixed.
I feel the same why, no clue on what it is

There's no way opening multiple tabs by hand is the equivalent of opening hundreds of tabs at once. The most a person can hand click is 3-4 per second. Snaplinks can attempt to open hundreds in a second.

What really slows things down over there is the constant refreshing by hundreds of people looking for rares at egg drops
