LORE & BACKGROUND No one knows exactly how the universe began. It was first believed that a cosmic explosion sent the worlds spinning out into the great expanse of darkness. But no mere cosmic explosion could account for its wonders and intracacies, especially the existence of magic. It was undeniable that greater powers were at work and many have come to believe that the universe was forged by some divine force, an all-powerful entity known as the Goddess. She explored the universe and encountered the world of Edean. She shaped it by raising mighty mountains and dredging out vast seas and breathing the sky into being. She also wove the Aether, an ethereal dimension of her great magic. When she departed Edean, she empowered several individuals to draw on the Aether's magical properties so they could tend to her workings and maintain the integrity of the world she had created. They would be the ones to maintain order and ensure a safe future for the beings that would later come to birth. For hundreds of years, those blessed with the power of the Goddess hid their gifts, only to practice them in secret. The Realms were peaceful, but inevitably their secrets were disclosed. The Old Kings came to rely on the blessed and together, they forged great kingdoms as the Goddess had intended. They also formed a new religion based on a deep connection with the earth and the heavens with the Goddess as their deity. But the knowledge of magic was not widespread and there were many from the remote realms who were oblivious to it. King Tarran Saeraphin, ruler of the untouched kingdom of Galyn, landed upon the shores of Tierena, a coastal realm of the Eastern Kingdoms, in Gwydion of 1513. They came on a quest for land and treasures, but what they witnessed was beyond what they had ever seen before. Saeraphin cowered in fear at the sight of the land's magical wonders, praying to his Gods for protection and soon fled back to Galyn. He later formed the Silver Hand and traveled the lands in search of other tainted realms. They are group of maddened zealots and religious fanatics wholly dedicated to eradicating anyone capable of using magic. They worship the Old Gods, denying the Goddess and claiming that her magic is evil and not natural. They hunt the blessed with a zealousness that frightens and often resort to extreme measures to destroy them. This includes killing any mortal they assume to be blessed, killing mortals to get to the blessed or killing mortals who sympathize with the blessed. As such, many serve the Silver Hand out of fear. They were once a powerful force in the Eastern Kingdoms, having destroyed Tierena's capital city of Tirisaa during the Second War. They fled Tierena once again and traveled to the distant kingdom of Valyr, where they were finally destroyed. Almost 500 years have passed, almost enough time for the wounds of war to heal. Hyrule has been rebuilt from the ground up but the brief peace the Realms have known may be at an end. Whispers of a new Silver Hand have been heard upon the winds and the kingdoms have been thrown into chaos. The non-blessed grow angry, claiming their lands would be safe if they had not made such foolish alliances. Tensions growing between the mighty city-states means Edean teeters again on the edge of open conflict. The dark hour approaches, but hope remains. RACES Edean's realms are inhabited by numerous races, including the standard humans, mischievous halflings, stout dwarves, tiny gnomes as well as many different subraces of elves and of course, half-elves. Many planetouched races exist as well. New races are encouraged, as long as they are proper humanoids. GEOGRAPHY & ECOLOGY Edean has a very diverse geography. Tierena is a large temperate realm surrounded on the east and south by vast seas. It is a land of lush verdant woodlands, rolling hills and grassy plains inhabited by many fantastic creatures. It’s principle city is Tirisaa under the command of Baron Asrienus although many other small towns and settlements exist. It is a powerful military center and Hyrul, the seat of Lady Grane, is naturally a powerful economic and military centre. It stands proudly on the banks of the Teil'yn Sea and also serves as the realm's premier center of trade and exchange. |
