THE SOURCE
The Aether is the fundamental force of magic that permeates the world, from which spellcasters draw their strength. It is a barrier and a gate between raw magic and the world. With the Aether in place, mortals can access magic and are protected from the harmful effects of contacting raw magic while still able to tap its refined energy. Aether is present in everything, whether living, dead, undead, inanimate, solid, liquid or gas. It permeates the soil, suffuses the deeps of the ocean and stretched to the limits of the air in the sky and beyond. The Aether is like a great base fabric upon which the substance of the world is embroidered. Spellcasters cause spells to work by drawing power from Aether, adjusting the balance of energy so that its power comes forth and is shaped by their actions and will. Reckless spellcasting has been known to damage the Aether by tearing and shredding it, leaving dead magic and wild magical areas.

ABOUT MAGIC USERS
Not everyone can use magic, but those that can are able to harness and manipulate the world's natural energies in the Aether and channel them into their magics. They focus their magics through the use of various objects and thoughts, spoken word and song. Many are scholars and adventurers that have followed the ley lines in search of magical artefacts. Many magic users scribe their magical lore within tomes, especially during their studies.

SPELLCRAFT
This is not necessary, but I like to assign my spells to a school of magic. I use the Dungeons & Dragon schools which are Abjuration, Conjuration, Enchantment, Transmutation, Divination, Evocation and Necromancy. If you choose to follow this system, your character may specialize in a single class or dabble in many. In regards to magic, there are essentially no limits as to what your character can accomplish, as long as the workings fall within one of the schools. Please be creative! The casting of spells often requires the caster to do, say, or use something in order for the spell to work. Spells may require a verbal, somatic, or material component or a magical focus. More information on D&D Spellcraft can be found here.

MAGICAL STUDY
The Enclave acted first and foremost as a residence for the Magi and then finally as a place of teaching. The most important structure within the enclave is the temple, where the residents take time to meditate and reflect as well as take part in the periodic services and rituals. The second most important structure in the enclave is the Arcanum, housing, most importantly, the Elder Council chambers consisting of the most senior mages. For the most part, they do not take part in the judicial system, that is left to the Sentries. The Arcanum also houses The University and the Archive. The Archive is the enclave’s main repository of ancient wisdom and knowledge, housing tomes, scrolls and texts of great literature, history and legend. The residents of the enclave live in small cottages within the perimeter. Most of the Magi residing at the enclave work there as well, in the fields or in the workshops.
