Role playing is when you act out a specific character in a relatively unscripted environment. The Role playing forums are your stage and your task as player is to assume the role of your fictional persona and post stories about your adventures on those forums. Your character can do almost anything you imagine. This is a free-formed role playing game, which means Edean is shaped by its players as they role play. The only limits are set by your own creativity (as well as a few rules set down by the administration). If you are new to role playing, we suggest that you read the following guide. It will guide you in assuming your persona and creating excellent role playing posts.

INTERACTION
At the heart of role playing is interaction with other players. When you role play, your text should provide an opening for other players to role play. You should only post what your character does, not what happens afterwards because this provides an opening for other players to also respond and provide their characters' actions. Controlling the actions of other players is called powerplaying and should be avoided. Let the owners of the other characters post responses to you. Also, it is common courtesy to avoid double-posting and allow other members a chance to respond and reply to your posts before posting again.

REALISM
Role playing is all about immersing yourself in and experiencing a different world, and even though Edean's setting is set in a time of magic and high fantasy, your stories still have to make sense. When you signed up, you chose a role. Your task as player is to play your character and to act - from the character's logical point of view. Try, as often as possible, to stick to your chosen role and ensure that the decisions your character makes are consistent with that role. That is to say, act as your characters nature is. That being said, all actions, words and thoughts should be a natural extension of your character's knowledge, skill, age etc to avoid "godmoding".

CONTINUITY
Continuity is of the utmost importance because it maintains the flow of time on the forums where players typically post more than one topic on any given day. Realistically, your characters should not appear in multiple threads (or take part in role playing situations) that take place at the same time. That being said, players can avoid confusion by declaring the date and time that a certain situation is taking place. This should be done every time a player creates a new post (not every time a reply is made), so that all posts can be neatly and logically ordered into a timeline. There is no set format for your declaration, the only requirements are that they include the current year, month and day and that they are posted at the very beginning of the qualifying threads. Here are some examples.

Quote:

Dawn, 12th of Sygwenion, year 1208
12 Sygwenion 1208
2nd Week of Sygwenion, year 1208
Dawn, Early Sygwenion, 1208

PLOTS & STORYLINES
While roleplaying, the setting is one of the most important aspects of the whole game. It is the thing that sets up where, when, and what is going on at the time of your post. Strive to refer to location, time and surroundings in your roleplaying posts.

Quote:

Location: Describe where your character is.
Time: When is your roleplay taking place?
Surroundings: What is going on around your character? What surrounds surrounds them? How do they about that place, at that time? How do others feel about him/her? What are the emotional, physical, and social things that surround him/her?

TYPES OF POSTS
IC AND OOC
IC, or in character, refers to everything that is said from one character to another. OOC, out of character, indicates everything said by a character out of role play. Most of the OOC chat takes play on the General Discussion forums. It should be noted that OOC chat should be kept to a minimum on the role playing forums. Members should use the private messaging system to communicate privately. If you must explain your character's intentions while roleplaying, you must clearly indicate what is OOC. This can be done two ways.

OOC: [Insert message here]
OR
(( [Insert message here] ))

FLAGGING POSTS
Role playing is an open experience however, there are times when it is appropriate to close or limit a thread, where thread authors reserve the right to regulate anyone who participates in that particular role playing situation. These types of threads must be flagged. To do this simply insert the appropriate code in the subject line before your text. Use your discretion when it comes to flagging, as they have been known to create cliques. It should be noted that threads that are unflagged are considered 'Open', where there anyone can post.

Quote:

[P] refers to a private thread, where you may not add but you may still enjoy the drama.
[L:#] refers to a limited thread. The # indicates the maximum number of people that can post in the thread, including the post author.

STYLE & FORMAT
TENSE & PERSON
All role playing should be done in narrative prose. Sentences should be written in the third person (he, she, they, etc.) where your roleplaying refers to the character by name. Sentences should also be written in the past tense. This means, your character's actions occur in the past, rather than the present. Spoken word should be in the first person. When written, it should resemble a paragraph from your favourite fantasy novel where the reader is an observer watching the actions unfold before him/her. The following is a great example of proper role playing in this style.

LENGTH
Edean is a game for all roleplayers of every skill level. All players should strive to be thorough and descriptive in their roleplaying and achieve a post length of at least 50 words. While beginner roleplayers may just meet the required minimum words per post, advanced roleplayers and expert players may type an upwards of 450 words. As long as you communicate what you would like to communicate, and feel good about your writing, then you are participating in a rich creative experience that should reward you and encourage others to post back.

SPELLING & GRAMMAR
Poor spelling and grammar are distracting, that is why all players must take care when posting. If your posts are barely legible, some people may not even bother to read your post or role play.
Quote:

- Punctuate properly to avoid long runon sentences.
- Capitalize proper names of items, people and places, as well as the first letter of each sentence.
- Avoid netspeak within your roleplay. This includes terms such as lol, plz, g2g, ttyl.
- Write out numbers that are equal to or less than one hundred.
