Tirisaa’s seaside promenade lies where the sourthern courtyard transitions into the docks and harbor. It is the site of the city’s most famous tavern and inn, The Crimson Queen. Long has it been favoured by local residents, seafarers and merchants alike. The board above the door bares the image of a keg and sways slightly in salty breeze. Laughter, organ music and the sounds of mugs clinking drift through the cracks in the slightly shabby establishment. The main room of the tavern is quite dark, the only light coming from a fire in the hearth at far side of the room and a few scarce oil lamps. The handsome middle-aged man behind the bar fills his customers mugs with a dark amber liquid from a large keg. Dark stained tables with clusters of matching chairs litter the floor. In one corner, the town drunks engage in a friendly game of cards and in the other, cloaked figures speak in hushed whispers. The cook brings out hearty meals to a group of seafarers who just returned from a long journey. A set of stairs lead down to the dark and damp cellar where the kegs are kept. Another staircase on the main floor lead to the second floor. Halfway up, there is a landing where the inn’s organ is situated where a gruff old man plays a swashbuckling tune. Continuing up the staircase leads to a bank of guest rooms. The Queen has long been known for its clean rooms and good service. Standard accommodations provide guests with a small, private room with a single bed, the use of a blanket, a pillow, some amenities and a covered chamber pot in the corner. Typical meals include oatmeal, soft cheese and strawberries for breakfast, sausage, duckeggs and yams for lunch and broiled sunfish, broccoli and berry pie for dinner. Of course no meal is complete without a sampling of the tavern’s famous ale. |
