Humans and Their Subtypes Humans, of course, are humans. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors with a dazzling array of cultures, religions, and nations. And those are just the garden-variety humans! Add magic or psionics to the mix, and you have a whole different animal... ~*~ Magic Users All human magic users must draw their power from one of the otherworlds, so if the rifts were sealed, they would be unable to work any magic on Earth. Depending on which otherworld they tap into, they are able to control very different forces. -Clerics and Paladins Those who can attune themselves with the Higher Plane are able to wield what is called High or “Holy” Magic. This magic includes the power of healing, helping things grow, mending broken things, expelling dark magics, and banishing or destroying the denizens of Mara Nocnitsa. The gentler types that use this magic are called clerics, and they use their powers to aid others. The ones that consider themselves “champions” of the higher plane call themselves paladins, and they wield their power like a weapon against demons and undead monsters. Most, but not all, High Magic users are allied with the ESPers, if they don't work for them directly. -Necromancers and Sorcerers The darker magics of Mara Nocnitsa are dangerous for any human to touch, but the allure of them is unmistakable. Necromancers have the power to raise zombies and control undead creatures, including ethereal ones. They can also affect wraiths, though not to as great an extent because wraiths are still living. Sorcerers dabble with the demons themselves, though some wind up summoning imps or devils by mistake. The ESPers keep a close watch on this sort of magical activity, and stop it when they can. -Witches Channeling the wild magic of the faeries, witches can use the same glamors and elemental powers that the fey can. In fact, witches have a wider variety to choose from, since most fey have only very specific glamors they can perform, but witches aren't restricted that way. They are usually nature-loving and easily mistaken for your average neo-pagan. The only difference is, their magic is real. -Shamans Those who tap into the animal spirits of the Beastlands are called shamans. Though not shifters themselves, they can imbue themselves with certain animal traits like heightened senses, speed, or even flight by calling upon the appropriate animal spirit. Some can only call upon their specific “totem animal(s)”, but others may summon any variety of animal spirit they like. Shamans are exceedingly rare, and almost exclusively found among shifterkin. -Mages Even rarer than shamans are the mages, for they have access to the most difficult magics for humans to handle: the magic of Phantasia. Drawing directly on the powers of dragons, unicorns, and the otherworld itself, they have a seemingly endless array of spells they can cast. Most of these magics must be performed by doing a ritual of some kind, though some just have intuitive control over the power and can cast the spells at will. However, because Phantasia is the least compatible with the human world in terms of magic, such spells often cause very noticeable disruptions. The ESPers don't like these sorts of disruptions, and make a point of ensuring that mages are very, very rare. -Wizards A relatively modern type of magic user, this is a human that has made a lifelong commitment to studying magic. They may pick a particular type, but more often than not they study any and all types of magic that exist in the human world. Some talented wizards are even able to create new rituals and spells and magical objects based on their studies. They usually don't have more than a tiny spark of inherent magical talent, and thus do not have any strong pull from any of the otherworlds where their powers are concerned. This allows them to experiment and even blend different types of magic, creating a class all their own. Though ingenuitive and full of endless potential, wizards are few and well-monitored, with most of them snapped up for employment by the ESPers. ~*~ Psychics It is a commonly known fact that humans do not use the full potential of their brains. However, some do push things a little further, and develop powers that spring entirely from the mind. Such humans are called psychics, and they wield a very special power that relies only on themselves, not an outside source. If the rifts were completely sealed between worlds, psychics would still retain their powers. For this reason, some psychics actually WANT the otherworlds sealed off completely, for that would leave them as the new big power in town. Of course, they tend to keep quiet about that goal... -Telekinetics Those who can move objects with their minds. Bending spoons, levitation-- you name it, there's probably a telekinetic that can do it. Poltergeists are usually just telekinetics that don't realize their own powers yet. -Pyrokinetics A special type of telekinetic that has the ability to make objects burst into flames-- even objects that you wouldn't normally think are flammable. Spontaneous human combustions can usually be traced back to a pyrokinetic with a grudge. -Clairvoyants Simply put, psychics who can hear or see things that are happening somewhere else. Some call it scrying. This only includes things that are happening in the present; psychometrics deal more with the past, and precognitives deal with the future. -Psychometrics Psychics that can “read” the history of an object by touching it. If the object is a personal belonging, the psychometric can glean details about the owner. All physical items contain a psychic impression if humans have touched them, so all a psychometric has to do is find the clues left behind. Most psychometrics have trouble touching people, because the readings are so intense they can drive the psychic mad. -Precognitives Psychics that can “see” the future before it happens. Usually this is something in the very near future, so subtle that it's usually called “reflex”, but other precogs will receive visions of an impending future that could be days, months, years in the making. These “oracles” often don't understand their visions fully, for the future is not a fixed thing, but the good ones write them down for further study. People with even a small amount of precog ability tend to experience deja vu often. -Astral Travelers Some psychics can enter a trance-like state and "project" their spirit selves into an alternate state of being. In this way, they can travel to places far from where their bodies are located without moving a muscle. How far and how long one can do this depends on how powerful the psychic is. A rarer variant of these Travelers is known as a Dream Walker, who specifically travels while in a lucid dreaming state, and can enter-- even alter-- the dreams of others. Such travel has its risks, however... ~*~ Mostly Human There are other subtypes of humans, usually those with some ties to the otherworlds without being a denizen of those worlds, or that don't quite fit into the other categories. The Penitent These are angels trapped in mortal form as penance for their rebellion, for those that did not choose to flee to Mara Nocnitsa. On the surface, they are like any other human, but they often have visions or dreams that awaken them to their true nature. The Penitent have the option of returning to the Higher Plane, but must first reconcile their past mistakes and accept the goodness of Creation once more. Other Penitent never learn their true nature, or ignore it, and live and die as humans over and over again, eternally reincarnating as a mortal, until they either ascend or fall so thoroughly from grace that they are cast into Mara Nocnitsa with their brethren. Half-Angels and Demons In exceedingly rare circumstances, an angel or demon with its own physical form (not a possessed human) will mate with a human. If a child is produced, it will have the inclinations of its otherworldly parent, and may even develop powers relating to that home plane. Half-angel children frequently become clerics or paladins, while half-demon children tend to pick up necromancy or sorcery. Some of these children are embraced by the Higher Plane or Mara Nocnitsa and eventually become full angels or demons, while others continue to live a mortal life among their human relations. Though technically mortal, they are unusually long-lived for humans, and can have a life span that is nearly double that of a normal human being. Half-Fae Humans and Faeries have been neighbors for so long, that it would be unusual for there NOT to be any half-blood children. These special babies are usually whisked away to Tuatha de Danaan immediately after they are born, but some are raised among humans. They are a little wild, a little mischievous, and seem like they are always standing with one foot in another world. Often they have some physical trait that betrays them, like a special birthmark, or vivid green eyes, or slightly pointed ears. These children are always more likely to become witches, for the wild magic runs in their veins. In fact, most witches have some amount of fey blood in them. Shifterkin Some children are born of shifter parents, but for whatever reason the bond does not take, or it skips a generation. These children are still special, and have affinity for the Beastlands even though they cannot take an animal shape. They have ways to commune with the animal spirits through meditation and astral projection, and the Native Americans are best known for this sort of “totem” seeking. They are very likely to take up Shamanic magic. Edited by Director, Dec 2 2008, 10:57 PM.
