Legendary Creatures It is probably best to cover all of these individually, as they share little in common aside from the fact that they are magical like the Fey, so cold iron and noon-forged steel harms them more than normal weapons. Also, they are unable to breed in the human world, and lose their immortality if they remain too long among mortals. They are extremely rare, and not many are intelligent or skilled enough in magic to blend in among humans, so keep that in mind if you wish to play one. Most of these creatures are for background flavor, and to give the ESPers some stock creatures to deal with on a day-to-day basis. ~*~ Dragons Huge beasts that range in appearance and shape, but most have certain traits in common: they enjoy collecting treasure, they can fly, and they are vaguely reptilian. Some are more serpentine, while others resemble giant winged lizards. The ones more commonly found in eastern Asia can fly without wings, and some in the colder climates are actually covered in fur or feathers instead of scales. All dragons are intelligent, have voracious appetites, and are magpies for precious metals, stones, and works of art. A few specifically collect books or paintings. Most dragons are possessed of powerful magics that allow them to change their shape, and some have even walked among us in human form to accumulate more exotic treasures for their hordes. However, they are very secretive of this, and rarely reveal their true natures to others in the human world. Unicorns Vain, capricious, and beautiful, unicorns are generally considered creatures of goodness and light. They have the ability to heal with a touch from their spiraling single horns, and are possessed of many older magics as well. Superficially, they resemble white horses with a single horn set above and between their eyes, but they are smaller and more slender than any horse. They are also swifter, and can outrun even a cheetah in the human world. Unicorns have cloven hooves like a goat or a deer, a long tufted tail like a lion, and the males have goat-like beards. They have sometimes been known to take on human form, due to their capricious natures, and live among mortals for a time. A unicorn may live as a homeless person (to observe humanity in all its squalor), or an actor (for they do love the attention), or just to be perverse, a racing jockey. Unicorns get along well with the Fey in the human world, and will sometimes seek their company. They prefer natural glades with a small, clear pool that shows their reflection (for they are quite vain). They are fascinated with the human world and are the most likely of the intelligent legendary beasts to visit; however, they never stay for very long. Griffins Fierce, clever beasts that have the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. They love the taste of horse meat and will hunt it exclusively above all other types of food. For that reason, they often cross to the human world, for regular horses are rare in Phantasia (and pegasi are too hard to catch). They have no true magic of their own, but are intelligent enough to steal certain spells from the dragons, and have occasionally taken human form to find easier access to horses. Horses, of course, instinctively shy away from a disguised griffin. Some griffins realize that there are other opportunities in the human world, and since griffins are very opportunistic, they will go into business for themselves. Phoenixes These splendid birds are the color of flames, about the size of eagles, with a magnificent tail. Every five hundred years or so, they build a nest of spices and lay a single egg, before bursting into flame and burning to death. The warm ashes incubate the egg, and the phoenix is born anew. A phoenix feather can bring a person back to life if brushed across the person's brow within an hour of death, while an unhatched egg can make a person immortal if the egg is swallowed whole. Phoenix feathers and eggs are sold by human poachers that cross into Phantasia illegally, though a few of these items may be obtained through legitimate means. Though eternal, phoenixes can be killed permanently, and therefore are considered an endangered species since their numbers never increase. They are under protected status by the ESPers. Note: Magical beast of low intelligence, and therefore unplayable. Sphynxes These creatures have the heads of humans, bodies of lions, and wings of a great bird of prey. They traditionally guard valuables, but since that job gets boring, they amuse themselves with riddles and puzzles. Any intruder that is unable to answer their riddles is devoured, while a correct answer will either allow passage to the treasure, or at least the opportunity to run for one's life. A pair of sphynxes guards the vaults of the ESPers at all times, though a new pair comes through to replace them every decade or so. Note: Though intelligent, these creatures are rare outside of Phantasia and usually have a post to guard. Please consider carefully and PM the Director before playing one. Manticores Vicious, scorpion-tailed cousins of the sphynxes, these creatures have very basic intelligence (a little more advanced than a chimpanzee, a little slower than most humans) and are only barely capable of human speech. They have triple rows of teeth like a shark, bat-like wings, and a leonine body with a human-like face. These creatures sometimes slip through the rifts for better hunting grounds and need to be captured or put down permanently. Note: Magical beast of low intelligence, and therefore unplayable. Hippogriffs These bizarre creatures are the rare product of a griffin mating with a horse. They have the head, wings, and forelegs of a griffin, with the hindquarters of a horse. Such beasts are usually rounded up and shoved through the rifts to Phantasia, where they have a better chance to live in freedom and relative peace. There are whole herds of hippogriffs flying wild over the vast plains of Phantasia. On rare occasion, they can be tamed and kept in our world as pets, for they are already sterile and mortal, so do not suffer some of the same side-effects as other legendary creatures. Note: Magical beast of low intelligence, and therefore unplayable. Centaurs From a distance, this may appear to be an ordinary horse, but where its head and neck should be is a human torso. These intelligent creatures are usually peaceful and cultured, reveling in music and games, but they are also very prideful and can be moved to war if they feel it is necessary. Centaurs don't often cross to the human world, mostly because they have no magic to disguise themselves, and so they are only playable in the Phantasia forum. Merfolk/Merrow Your typical mermaid or merman looks like a human with slightly webbed fingers, gills, and a fish-like tail instead of legs. Rifts deep beneath the sea can be found, and merfolk rarely notice the difference between the oceans of Phantasia and the oceans of Earth. Some have the magic to take on legs and air-breathing lungs to explore the land, but most stick to the sea where they belong. They have a highly developed society with undersea cities made of stone and living coral, and are just as intelligent as humans. Dolphins and whales are kept as pets and beasts of burden, though they are always treated well. Wyverns Smaller cousins to dragons, these beasts have very little intelligence. They generally resemble feathered serpents with wings, only one pair of legs, and a mouth full of poisonous fangs. Like manticores, these creatures may slip through the rifts by accident and need to be rounded up or destroyed before they can wreak havoc on the mortal plane. Note: Magical beast of low intelligence, and therefore unplayable. Perytons Another troublesome beast, a peryton resembles a winged stag with wild eyes and sharp teeth. They have the voice of a human, cast a human shadow even in their beast forms, and can temporarily take the shape of a human as well in order to better hunt their preferred prey: humans. These creatures did not develop as they are today until the first rift opened between the human world and Phantasia, and their very specific adaptations would mean their extinction if the rifts between worlds were closed. Note: Though intelligent, these are generally not recommended as player characters due to their nature. Edited by Director, Oct 20 2008, 05:27 PM.
