Actually, these first few are "frequently UNasked questions", but "FUQ" sounded a bit dirty. ;) If you have questions of your own, feel free to PM the Director, and I will add them here. Q: How do all of these otherworld creatures exist in our world without anybody noticing them? A: Simply put, they can disguise themselves, and they're usually very careful. However, there is also a greater, more far-reaching reason than this: most humans don't see the shadows because they don't want to see them. Even when they think they do, reality consensus wins out over the “supernatural”, and they would see an ordinary horse and rider where a centaur is standing, or an ordinary human being where there was actually a demon or faerie. For those select humans who can see past the shadows of acceptable reality, they find the true nature of their surroundings. Some of these people are called sorcerers or psychics, but a greater number of them are just plain called “crazy”. Q: How does the Shadow Paradigm work? Is it like Men in Black, or what? A: In some ways, the ESPers operate very much like the Men in Black, but the resemblance is superficial. Like the MIB, their purpose is to protect humanity from otherworldly invaders, and to maintain harmony between these otherworlders and humans without actually letting the humans in on the secret for the most part. However, they also serve the otherworlds themselves, by protecting the creatures that live among us from a harsh human world that has no place for them except in fictional literature. They also make sure the cracked barriers between the worlds do not shatter entirely, resulting in chaos and the possible collapse of the multiverse. It's a big job, but somebody's gotta do it. Q: What's with all the angels and demons? Is this some kind of Christian thing? Or the pentagrams-- is that demon-worship or Pagan stuff? A: Not exactly. I use a lot of Judeo-Christian terminology for the Higher Plane beings, but only for the sake of convenience and recognition in American/other predominantly Judeo-Christian cultures. As mentioned before, in this setting, religions like Christianity are based on partial understanding and interpretation of the “true” nature of the relationships between the worlds. The pentagrams are just convenient symbols, and have no particular connection in this context to the occult or Pagan beliefs-- at least, not necessarily the traditional associations with the symbol. If this bothers you for religious reasons, just step back and tell yourself it's only a work of fiction and a game, not a jab at your personal beliefs. I welcome players of all creeds and religions to play on this board and enjoy the fantasy playground that I've created. Also, this fictional worldview is not my own personal worldview or in any way a reflection of my own religious beliefs, as I consider myself agnostic. Just for the record. Q: This sounds an awful lot like that other RP, the Veil Keepers. Is this a rip-off? A: Not really. I originally created the Veil Keepers, so you could almost call it a prototype of this new setting. However, the title “Veil Keepers” has already been copyrighted by a series of fantasy porn novels, so I had to come up with a new name for it anyway. Also, the current Veil Keepers is now being run by my friend Darren, who has taken the setting and the role-play board itself in a very different direction and built upon the very basic groundwork I laid. I did not create this new board to compete with the old one by any means, merely to continue to explore my own vision of the modern fantasy setting, and to have a board I could enjoy and share with friends and other role-players. I encourage anyone who is interested in this board to also check out Veil Keepers, as Darren and I have very different styles, and you may find one more to your liking than the other. Or, if you're so inclined, join both! The more the merrier. Q: Isn't this like every other dark modern/urban fantasy setting? A: Yes, and no. I suppose you could say it's a little like Rifts, or Modern D20, or White Wolf's World of Darkness, or Nightwatch/Daywatch, or Anita Blake, but at the same time it's really its own thing. I'm drawing from my lifelong love of fantasy, especially modern/urban fantasy, and organizing things into my own ideal modern fantasy setting. If you like that sort of thing, you'll probably enjoy yourself here. If this genre doesn't appeal to you, then you probably won't find anything here that will convert you. |
