Right, here's the OOC thread. There isn't much to discuss, but there IS one thing. In our (my group of RPing buddies) group, we use a very simple but effective system. The first player attacks, then the second player determines what the outcome of that attack should be, and then performs their own turn. The first player then does the same, responding to the second player's actions, and so on. An example usually helps to clarify things. Let's say the first player throws a punch. He'll detail a few things such as how he punched, where he punched, etc, and it's up to the second player to consider things like how fast their character is, their skill with martial arts, and other factors such as perhaps having an injury or shaky footing to figure out what the most reasonable outcome should be. This might seem like a strange system prone to exploitation, but it's fairly easy to call other players out on bullshit, and isn't a problem when both RPers respect one another. Given that this thread shouldn't be any more than a bit of light sparring, this shouldn't end up mattering anyway. A very brief version of this, in writing, might look like (also notice that I use a somewhat uncommon "screenplay" style for RPing), fought between two warriors, one with a two-handed sword and one with sword and board: ----- Player 1: :: The warrior brings down yet another overhead strike on his shielded opponent, but this time he puts a special twist on it: He puts a LEAP into the attack this time, the maneuver bringing extra force to his attack! :: Player 2: Shield Fighter: Hah! Using the SAME strike again? Don't you know that I'm just gonna... :: But he's caught off guard! He had struck with that SAME overhead swing a few times in a row now, and it seems that his plan all along was to intentionally mislead his reflexes! The Shield Fighter is unprepared for the sheer power this blow had brought down on him! He's knocked straight to the ground, but skillfully manages to breakfall into a backwards roll, coming to rest in a kneeling position with his shield covering his body at a 90 degree angle. :: Player 1: :: The mighty warrior doesn't let the wimpy shield user get the chance to recover! He's immediately beset upon by vicious strikes at his opponent, giving him no chance to raise to his feet. :: ----- Fairly straight-forward. Player 1 uses a repetitive series of overhead strikes to throw off Player 2's defenses. Player 2, acknowledging a good plan he didn't anticipate, realizes that the most likely outcome to the sudden leap strike is that he'd get knocked down, but partially salvages the situation with a well-done breakfall. However, Player 1 has gained the momentum, and attempts to secure it by continuing his assault. I hope this all seems easy. All other rules are fairly minor. You don't HAVE to post a character sheet, but for pragmatic purposes I'll include one for my character. However, fighting opponents of unknown capabilities is an art of it's own, and tactics such as ways to safely draw out an opponent's abilities so you know what to expect later are things I'm well-versed in, if you wish to conceal your character sheet. Also, there's a couple of game mechanic nuances we tend to use, but this is pretty unimportant. The only real thing I'm bringing in here in that regard is that tin disrupts the effects of psionics and other related "psychic" abilities, and that'll be relevant because the character I'll be using is something called a "Psi Blade", a warrior-type that uses telekinetic powers to augment their melee fighting style. This mechanic is derived from the classic "tinfoil hat preventing the government from reading your mind" trope. There is another thing, and that "mithril" is commonly understood to be simply titanium, but is known for it's receptiveness to magical enchantment. This is only relevant in regards to my character's equipment. Really, common sense should help you through the rest. This is just a nice, easy, breezy meet and greet...with your fist! There's no incentive to "win" here, so just relax and have fun. Also, in regards to the environment, nearby objects, setting, etc: Feel free to take the initiative on this. As far as I'm concerned, outside of the flat, grassy arena I'll have my guy standing in, anything can exist. I'll emphasize again that the point here is for us to get used to each other's "styles", so you're free to introduce whatever elements you feel will enrich the thread. And that's it! Here's my bio: Hurrikane Hektor Phew, that's it! Edited by Stiletto, March 4, 2012, 8:17 am.

The Demon You look like you could be fun to rp with. Don't worry I play Jaq to a J so he will be fooling around during the fight. He may be an assassin but he loves sparring just to test people. Edited by Poise&Poison, March 4, 2012, 9:06 am.

Well, my first impression of that bio is that it's well-done. Everything is well-explained and it's also thorough and organized like a pro. Should be good! Looks like we're gonna get to have a battle of the charisma specialists, which should be especially interesting. [edit] Now that spoiler thingie is nifty! [edit 2] Although it takes an actual "field test" to really measure, so far that guy seems like at least a solid Tier 2, could be Tier 3 territory when he's powered up. Since I'm at it, I might as well give the other ones a small digression. Tier 0 represents your average human with average abilities. Tier 1 represents a typical person that's been trained for combat, or has the means to effectively participate in it. Soldiers, police officers, mercenaries, etc fall into this category. Tier 1.5 represents actors such as spec-ops commandos that represent the upper end of human fighting capacities. People without such skills but possessing otherwise useful abilities in a combat situation also fall here. Tier 2 represents the peak of human abilities at the lower end, to superhuman at the higher end. A cop with Olympian endurance, strength, reflexes, intelligence, with world-class training and expertise could fit this. Real humans with these kind of capabilities are exceedingly rare, but still possible. Tier 1.5-quality people with access to noteworthy supernatural or technological means also fall here. The Terminator from the first and second movies would be a good example of a Tier 2 character. The terminator is tough enough to shrug off small arms fire, is stronger and faster than any human, etc, but you get the distinct feeling that enough humans armed with the right gear, or backed up by a tank or two could take down a T-800. Tier 3 represents a clear step up from the abilities of Tier 2 people. These people will have combinations of both elite personal abilities, powers, and gear. Wolverine, for example, has an EXTREMELY fast healing factor (hence a useful, strong power), and has physical capabilities that are peak level or beyond. Spiderman might also be a good example. There's a Tier 4 all the way to Tier 10 (Tier 8 is a deity, and Tier 10 is omnipotent), but they won't really be applicable here I don't think. Edited by Stiletto, March 4, 2012, 8:40 am.

Ahh... I appreciate the dossier on tiers. With my power level tiers (in the only tier rp ive done.) 3 is totally average human. (you and I) 2 is Peak human (Batman) 1 is superhuman (Grimmjow is a good example of a basic superhuman for me) 0- Divinity Tier 4 was my undead tier. Zombies had below human cababilities made up for by being you know... Undead. |

Well, I'll tell you what: If you can find some time in the week to put aside 2 hours for a posting session and we manage to do some quality RPing (And it has been by all means quality RPing, just....not enough of it), I'll be prompted to give it another go. But if not, or the pace cannot be maintained to at least one post per day, then I'll freely admit, I lose interest. I apologize if I sound a little disappointed here, but I've got a really long track record of this very thing happening to me, and while I love my small group of RPers, we're desperately looking for a larger community, just none seem to be really all that dedicated. |

I have lab 3-5pm NZT, and noon-1 pm on Thursdays. Any suitable times given that? I'm free for any other time Thursday. If that's too tricky, I'll settle for 1 post/day or 2 posts/2 days, something like that. Friday is a completely free day for me, if that could be a better date. Like I said I am interested, this is how I started out roleplaying and I would love to get back to my roots. I just got back from a four thousand mile trek across country so I didnt have any time to do anything before now but I would love to do something like this again. Might be a bit rusty since I have only written two posts in eight months, but gimme some practice and I will be a well function post aking machine. |

Sounds good. I'm not worried about anyone being rusty, I'm experienced in accommodating RPers of varying skill levels, so you should have all the time you need to scrape off that rust. What I AM worried about, however, is finding those illusive RPers that have that magic combination of both quality and quantity. |

Is this still open? I have a crapload of character I need to combat-test, and I was gonna start a sparring thread until I saw the IC thread for this. Some are NPCs planned out for my RP, some are characters I want to run, and some are just weird ideas. |
