Caeli sat on her old cot in the middle of her small abode house. She was tenderly holding a picture of her Mom and Dad. Val had been in it too, but Caeli tore her face right out of it. Val didn't deserve to be in her most beloved family photo, even though she was dead and Caeli should feel sympathy for her sister. She sighed and looked outside at the rising sun that silhouetted the desert horizon and cacti in the distance. If only she could've stopped Val...
Her cell phone trilled. She had a call, but nobody, besides the robber that she took the phone from and national security, due to an incident involving her parents, had her number. Curious, she picked up the phone.
"Friday, May 29, 2023.
Good morning. This is an automated message from Lieutenant John Macamera. You are being called due to your involvement with Dr. William Ballard's research project that took place in the year 2019 through 2020, and possibly continuing on to this year. We are requesting your presence on the battlefield on 1 June of this year to overthrow Dr. Vick Tenia. Please respond as soon as possible, by calling this number: 201-337-8194. I repeat. 201-337-8194. Thank you and have a good day." Before Caeli could react, the message stopped and she heard a dial tone.
"Get a pen, get a pen, get some paper, write it down. 201-337-8194. 201-337-8194. 201-337-8194." She repeated, running around the house, looking for a pen and something to write on. She knocked over a half-drunk mug of black coffee that she hadn't finished. She didn't even acknowledge the fact that the spill could ruin her floor.
Caeli stopped at her makeshift driftwood desk that she had bought from some shady guy that walked by her house a few weeks ago. Rummaging frantically through the drawers, she found a pen and a loose, crumpled up, blue sticky note. Scrawling down the number while she still remembered it, she stuck the paper on the kitchen wall as she walked back to the table to clean up her dripping coffee.

Morning. With a sigh, the black-haired teen rolled out of bed. He streached, his large black wings spread wide behind him. He shivered, his wings flexing as he did so. It was time for another day of living in virtual seclusion.

The young raven showered quickly, spending as little time as possible under the water. He didn't like getting his wings wet. They reacted funny, and made it difficult to fly until they were dry. He dressed himself quicly in his usual attire of black jeans and a metal-studded black belt, the studded collar never being removed from his neck.

Dressed and ready for the day, Erik opened the door to his treehouse-type home. That was basically what it was, a treehouse. Set high in the branches of a large oak tree, the structure seemed to be part of nature itself. It was a fitting home for the bird child.

Spreading his wings wide, Erik launched himself off the edge of the doorway. With a powerful thrust of his wings, he soared into the sky. Freedom.

A buzz-like ringing shook the young man from his peaceful flight. With frozen fingers, he fished through his pocket in search of the contraption. Flipping it open, he placed it to his ear, where he heard a voice;

"Friday, May 29, 2023.

Erik swore. The one who almost never showed any sort of emotion swore. It may have been a surprise to most, but to him, it wasn't. He never wanted to talk to those people again. So why was he dialing the number even as he thought? He waited through the ring, until someone answered. "Hello." he stated as soon as someone picked up. "I am the Raven."
I'll whisper in your ear,
You are mine, and you will never have to be alone.
And when I pull you near,
You'll know I love you like I never loved anyone.
So let me be the one to lift you up,
I'll carry you home.
'Cause now I'm here to keep you safe,
And to catch you when you fall.

Derek woke up the same as he did every day, 7:30 sharp. He got out of bed threw on a cut off and some chorts , spent a few seconds pulling his tail through the hole cut into all of his pants. He went into the fridge grabbed an apple and a protein shake. He downed the protein shake, and ate the apple. then he went into the basement and started bench pressing some. He went at that for 15 minutes then did some squats. Then he did the one type of exercise that was totally unique to him. Tail curls. He wrapped his tail around a rubber gripped 20 lb. dumbell and started to curl his tail up then left then down then right.

Before he had the surgery he spent his excersize time divided evenly among all his muscle groups, but since he had got his tail, and furry arms, chest and legs he'd more time on tail to make sure it was developed enough to use to climb. He threw the dumbell to the ground and jumped up to the bar hanigng from the ceiling and started doing pull ups. Afters his workout he sat on the couch and turned on tv.What do i wanna do today. he asked himself

As the lion girl dug out moderately-clean clothes from under her bed, she couldn't seem to keep her eyes from wandering back over to the phone number. Her thoughts danced around the subject and her overly-active imagination immediately drew out the most gory and horrible outcomes that could happen if she went there to fight.

Caeli, really. What's the worst that could happen?

The room is black. Void of anything but her blood-covered body and the person- no, monster- that was attacking her. Its sharpened teeth were ominously reflective, and the drop of moonlight that managed to squeeze itself through the cracks in the concrete walls made them glow. Saliva and blood dripped onto her stomach as it stalked her, deciding...
Do I kill her now, or make her die slowly of her injuries?
She didn't flinch when its long, bony, sharp finger emerged from the darkness and reached for her throat. She was too tired, hurt... And the only way to heal was to die....

Caeli opened her eyes quickly and tried to get the thought out of her mind by busying herself.
Pick up some pants, extra shirts, pocket knife, energy bar, a couple Red Bulls... And my toothbrush! Can't forget the toothbrush. That would be bad. Bad, bad, bad. It's a weird word.... Bad.
She thought to herself, stuffing her clothes, weapons, foodstuffs, and her toothbrush into the bag before slipping on her brown combat boots and grabbing the note off the counter, dialing the mysterious number as she paced around her little hut.
Send.
Ring, ring. Ring, ring. Ring, ri-
"Hello, you've reached the United States Army Base in Dunes City, Oregon! Who's calling, please?"
What seemed to be the most excited Barbie tour guide to ever work for the Army picked up the other line. She could hear generals yelling and soldiers marching faintly in the background. Caeli fumbled. It wasn't a prank, apparently.
"U-uh. I'm Caeli... Margolis. From the Genome project. Lieutenant John Macamera called me. Well, it was an automated message, but in essence--"
The Barbie girl interrupted.
"Yeah, okay! Hon, just sit tight, we'll send a few men over to pick you up."
"What do you mean, a few men--"
"Please hold!"
Patriotic elevator music answered her, followed by a silky-voiced general who was probably not actually a general blabbering on about joining the army and fighting for our country and what have you. Army crap that she didn't need- or want- to hear. She had other things to do.

Approximately eighty seconds later, Caeli heard the rumbling of jet engines and the sound yelling men. Curious, she picked her backpack up and threw the note on her tiny kitchen table, padding over to her front door. She grabbed the worn knob and twisted, pulling the door open carefully.
The wind created from the powerful jet engine blew her hair back and made her stumble a bit, but she managed to keep her balance enough to stay standing up and take in what was happening.
There was a jet. Outside her house. And soldiers were swarming around it like ants stuck in a bowl half-filled with pudding.
Rookies, most likely.

What, am I not dangerous enough to get the big guys with the bazookas and the rocket launchers? This is outrageous.

The sea of soldiers parted for a man dressed in olive with metal stars pinned all over his shoulders to walk down the ramp and onto the ground. He was very tall, with buzz-cutted blond hair and a defined jawline.
"Don't lose your balance, girl, it's just a supersonic jet!" The man barked. Caeli stood up straight and looked the man up and down.
"Are you Lieutenant Macamera?" She yelled over the loud engine. The man laughed curtly.
"No. I'm the bad cop, General Grant Whitney." He tipped his hat at her and motioned for Caeli to follow him into the plane. Still partly stupefied, she got down on all fours and galloped up the ramp, following the General into his giant machine. She was quickly followed by the clearly untrained soldiers.
Caeli sat down in the minimalist back seat and buckled herself into the chair. Once all the soldiers were inside, the door slid closed and the turbines made the plane shake with the force of them turning on. The jet's nose pointed upwards as they sped along the desert sand and into the cloudless sky.

Shit.

I forgot my toothbrush.

Derek was on his way out of his apartment to go see some friends.
"Keys, wallet, cash, phone....where is it?" he went over to the computer to see he had missed a call on his cell. DErek didn't have a house phone, he never answered his old house phone and it only ever wasw called my telemarketers, so why bother paying for it?

He put in his voicemail password and listened to it before heading out.

"Friday, May 29, 2023.

As the click sounded anouncing the end of the call he pressed the 7 key to delete the message. As he put the phone in his pocket he said to himself "Dumbass parnk caller's, like I dont have enought shit to deal with applying to a career now I gotta deal with there freaking morons, and how the hell did I not notice thatvoicemail sitting in my voicemail for two weeks."

As he was walking downtown he turned back cause he had heard a scream and wanted to see what it was (a girl had fallen out of her chair at at a neraby restaurant), there was a man in a black suit and sunglasses who he noticed was trying to act very inconspicuous. He turned around and kept walking. he took a sharp turn down an alley he knew turned into a dead end, but also had a fire escape. He waited on the rooftop looking down, waiting for the man to walk down the alley.

The man reached the end of the alley and Derek could hear him talking but he only causeght a little bit of it "Da.. we .o.t .hi., .all for .ack. .p" he slid down the wall some pushed off, launching himself over to the fire escape, and climbed his way down from there landing right in front of the man, trapping him between him and the wall. "Who are you, why are you following me, and who you working for?" Well Derek the united states governmen and if you ju... I didnt do anything wrong so you can go tell your peaople to blow it out their ass, and how the hell do you know my name? "Im sorry it had to go like this Derek" and at that Derek felt a very quick jab in the back of his neck, he are flew bac there to kill whatever bug just bit him, but bugs arent furry... he thought to himself, and theryre not usually sahped like darts.. and at that Derek passed out on the sidewalk in the alley.

The ravenboy nearly tossed his cell phone down mid-flight. Those bastards wanted him to do what?! Help them? It seemed ridiculous in the purest sense, but sure enough, even as he cursed their existence, he was turning himself in the direction they gave. He didn't know why he was doing it. He didn't owe those people anything. He should hate them, when it came right down to it. But, in all honesty, it was just what he did. He served people. And that was what they needed. They needed someone to help them defeat the evil scientist and his army of wolves. Someone who wouldn't let emotions get in the way. And that was where Erik came in. Of course, it couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact that, being part bird, Erik would have a significant advantage over any land creature.

Those were just a select few of the thoughts running through the young man's head as he made the flight over to the base. They offered to send a plane, but that just wasn't going to happen. Erik had a huge fear of airplanes, a fact that he himself often laughed at the irony of. Him, the bird, was scared of flying in an airplane? He assumed it was due to the enclosed feel of it, but he wasn't going to test the theory. It also took him a lot less time to get there than it would have otherwise.

Erik landed just outside the gates of the base. He looked around for a moment before walking up to the door. "Hello. I am from the Genome project. I was told to come here." he said, his voice showing no inflection whatsoever. He sounded monotone, just as he always did.

You'll know I love you like I never loved anyone.

"KID! Hey! Get up, lazy ass."
The General yelled in Caeli's ear and she awoke, growling. She was having a dream- General Whitney was a meatball and she tried to eat him. Definitely the weirdest she'd had in a while.
Caeli had fallen asleep a few minutes after the jet had taken flight. She wasn't tired; the lion-girl was just a bit overwhelmed and she figured the best way to overcome it was to just rest. When she slept, Caeli was in a world of adventures, pirates, soldiers, princes, her parents...
"Soldiers, get into your lines." Whitney barked at the men, who were totally oblivious to whatever was going on, and Caeli could've sworn that half of the bums were asleep.
They were in it for the glory- they didn't give a crap to what was happening in the real world. The one she left after her parents and sister died.
The world that Caeli was about to walk back into.
Soldiers scrambled into their sloppy lines and began marching kind of in time. The giant high-tech-only-a-military-jet-would-have-this-kind-of-thing ramp-door swung down and they descended into the dreary hangar.
There were planes and helicopters everywhere and men marched around, some stood in line for flight simulators. It was very impressive in size-- and in technology, as a matter of fact. The sounds of combat boots hitting concrete and jet engines taking off echoed off the aluminum walls.
Caeli pushed past the awkward soldiers and into the bright room. A vaguely handsome man in a loose olive t-shirt, jeans, and a lieutenant's cap on who couldn't be older than 20 walked up to them.
"Good morning, men! And... Lady, apparently." He smiled. "I'm Lieutenant John Macamera. And you are?"
Caeli just stared at him for a couple seconds. This boy was her age, maybe a little older, and he was a Lieutenant? What?
"Uh, hi. I'm Caeli. How old are you, exactly?" She asked, slightly confused. John laughed.
"Ah, you're from the Genome project, aren't you? I'm 19. I was recruited a few years ago-- because of my scores on the M.S.K.A.'s. Got a 1906, the highest score on tests anyone has ever gotten. I was immediately recruited, and well, I've done some for the old United States."
"So... What is this M.S.K.A thing?"
"It stands for the Military and Strategic Knowledge Assessments. The highest score you can get is a 1910, and you take it when you're 17-- old enough to join in the fight."

Caeli nodded. She dropped out of school shortly after her parents died, so she never got the chance to take it, apparently. Not that they'd let a lion into a high school...
"So, if you'd follow, me, Caeli, I could take you to meet your trainer, and I believe there is a young man here from the same project as you... Erik, I believe it was. He arrived moments ago." John grabbed Caeli's wrist and gently pulled her through the hangar and to a set of gigantic metal double doors.

Damn, this guy's got a grip. He's not even very muscular... Not like he's scrawny, but still. Weird.

He let go of her arm and flipped open a small panel. A woman's voice spoke.
"Please enter the 50-digit password, then press enter. You have ten seconds before security is called."
Immediately, John began punching in a flurry of numbers and letters, finishing the code in about 7 seconds.

What. Just happened. He remembers 50 digits, types them in in 7 seconds, and doesn't even break a mental sweat? No wonder he's a Lieutenant...

The double doors slid apart, revealing a long corridor with offices and weapons on each side. He led her down, humming some tune she couldn't quite recognize.
As they reached the end of the hallway, John stopped humming and turned to Caeli.
"You know, Caeli, you've got quite a small army on your hands here. There were only two other boys that called in- so far. We're going to have to train you. A lot. Before you go after Tenia. So, let's meet up with Erik and move on to the training room. I want to watch you two spar."

Do I have any real choice

Yes

No. Im not dying for someone else's cause. I'm leaving. At that he made his way to the door, no one stopped him but on his way out Macamera said

Its a shame about that college thing, you know we coulda gotten you back into college, but your not interested so I guess I'll just have you escorted out. Derek stopped dead in the doorway. Another chance at college... He turned around You can do that?

A Tenia Post!

Victor Tenia had been watching his prodigal experiment from the doorway of the building. He had been looking out into the field, keeping an eye on Asae. His eyes glinted as he saw the situation- one of his newest recruits pinned to a tree. Definitely what he liked to see... gore and violence, death, what had to happen to the rest of them. The humans. The maggots
"Asae."
The girl turned, ready to strike, to Vic. He paused.
"Good work. Come inside."
He led the way, moving through the dark, metallic hallways as Asae followed. Their footsteps echoed through the wide hall. At the end of the corridor, large twin doors slid open at Vic's word. The two walked into a large, dim room with two spinning chairs and an entire wall dedicated to guns and rocket launchers. Dry blood stained the floor in one corner, right above a primitive operating table with metal straps to hold whatever test subject being injected down. A plethora of needles and syringes sat in a metal bucket.
Vic sat Asae down in one of the chairs and made himself comfortable in the other.
"Asae, you know you have come a long way. Longer than most, with more progress; you are superior. Am I right?"
Asae nodded.
"Good. Now, our plan. We must put it into motion. Soon. I have received intel that the Military are putting together an army. This army is of people- and mutants, like you. But again, you are superior to them. You can kill them all. The mutants are Genome X, most of them still not perfected by Ballard. But you... You are the future. We are the new world. The new Earth."
Asae nodded again. She listened attentively as Tenia spoke of destruction and killing the humans.
"So, Asae, our mission is to destroy all the humans. But before we do that, we must eliminate the army. Not the mutants, though- save them for me."
"How strange it is to be anything at all..."
