The summer sun had beat down upon the Murelhellous. The double masted vestal road high on the summer waters as waves crashed against it’s hull. The Ship was sailing down along the western side of the Empire of Corith, the voyage taking the ship well beyond sight of any land. As the Murelhellous sailed along the frothing sea, the sky began to darken and winds became unruly. The waves crashed form firmly against the bow of the ship, the subtle swaying of the ship becoming more noticeable, choppy, cohesive. The ship, hearty and stocked with well seasoned sailors pressed on though, determined to breach the other side of the storm. For two days they sailed in search of such an end, but to no avail.. The vestal, soaked ad near waterlogged, finally succumbed to the wrath of the sea and the Murelhellous was swallowed up by the waves.
But amongst the passengers upon the doomed vestal, that were not destined to share the watery fate of the ship that bore them just yet. During the time when the last of the masts snapped and the hull broke, the content of the ship; both cargo and passengers were flung into the sea. Of those flung into the unforgiving ocean, fate would have it that a few would see the sun once more.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun had set over the horizon and the world had slipped into night. The sounds of waves washing against the shore as bodies and debris laid motionless on the sandy ground. Some of the wreckage had washed ashore of a beach, the sandy ground leading up to tropical looking trees just off of the beach head, and the night was approaching as the sounds of the world around began to come alive.
Thirteen degrees left, twenty two degrees right, fifteen degrees left, nine degrees right, the rocking of the ship had begun to imprint itself in the cleric's body and though he couldn't actually give the specific degree he was being tilted every time the ship rolled over a wave he could guess that given enough time he might be able to figure it out. For several days now Vahn had been on this ship waiting, praying that they might make it to their destination safely. The crew was full of rough but knowledgeable people and while Vahn was more than happy to eat with them and remember the feelings of the people of his hometown his mind told him that it was better to stay by himself so that he couldn't be influenced as much.
For two days now the dipping and rising of the ship had changed into something much more dramatic and accompanying the sound of water crashing against the ship were the shouts of the crew and a loud rumble of thunder and lightning constantly echoing through the thick walls of the ship. Today though everything would change on this ship, after the days of being submitted to the pounding waves the ship couldn't take the strain and broke. Vahn while not entirely conscious was able to survive the sinking ship and after a long while of floating had ended up on the shore of an unfamiliar area.
Rising shakily and weakly from his place on the shore Vahn said a quick prayer for any of the sailors who may have died unable to escape the ship and those that may have escaped but were still out floating in the waters unable to make it to a shoreline yet. "Rest in peace," he mumbled before looking around himself for his items. Taking a quick inventory Vahn was pleased to find that while he had lost some of his items he had managed to keep at least some food, his bedroll, pack, and whatever else was on him at the time. His dagger was gone but it was of no consequence, they were common enough to find and his Morningstar would protect him until he could find a replacement.
Looking around Vahn began to wander about looking for anything on the shoreline, survivors, supplies that may have washed ashore, even the dead. While not one to immediately disturb the dead after a quick prayer and making absolutely sure that there was no way the person might still be alive, Vahn would check the corpse for anything worth using.
Debris was not abundant. There was what seemed to be a chunk of one of the decks about four foot by 5 foot in size laying nearly imbedded in the sand with maybe 4 chunks of planks lay strewn about, and even most of the bodies of the crew-members were not to be found. Only two bodies lay upon the sand One being the body of a Dwarf male, and the other a Gnome or halfling who was turned over and couldn't be identified.
(make a search check and a knowledge religion check on the dwarf)
From such a intimidating ship and crew there was hardly anything that had landed on the beach with him. What he found of the ship was only a rather small section of what was probably once a deck on the ship and a handful of other boards. From what he could tell it was probably easiest to make a temporary shelter for the night with the available material than search through the nearby forest.
Along with the decking Vahn had found two bodies one a dwarf and the other what was possibly a halfling or maybe a gnome. Taking the chance with the dwarf first Vahn searched the body hoping to find something.
Caked in wet sand, the Dwarf's worn and torn red and brown clothing was soaked and heavy. It seemed to be made of wool, though the pants seemed burlap and torn far worse than the shirt. He was dead, and his body had begun to become stiff. On the index finger of the dwarf's right hand was a thick band, looking to be a unfinished metal (of rough silver coloration), and on the side of the dwarf's neck was a tattoo comprised of a eight pointed start that seemed to be comprised of spears and clubs, which the cleric recognized as the symbol for Kord, the God of strength. Hung round the dwarf's neck on a chain that had only remained due to it being tangled in his now matted black beard was a metal bar, maybe three and a half inches long and an inch in diameter. The shoes he had worn seemed in none too worse a shape, though soaked as was the rest of him. While he was examined, he seemed to stare out with unseeing eyes at is inspector.
The sea was not a kind place to an earthling such as herself. Aurora, had kept to herself, out from underneath the feet of the soldiers and in the quiet to be tormented by the sea in peace from worried eyes. It only got worse as the ship traveled through the storm, but, Aurora was determined to not make too much a fool out of herself, and managed to keep her stomach in place, barely.
From below deck Aurora heard a new groan from the ship then a series of small sharp cracks, then one terrible thunderous crack and the grating of large timber, she knew that sound well enough to guess what had just happened. A mast had just broken! Feeling a surge of panic she suddenly felt lost and very alone. As the ship began to sink she tried to work her way to the deck of the ship and barely made it before it submerged completely.
She began floating losing track of time and self. And drifted into the blackness.
Looking at the different items he had found Vahn let out a soft sigh, he wasn't sure what he had been looking for maybe a map, maybe a glimmer of hope. Saying a small prayer Vahn removed the chain from the dwarf's neck, the ring from his finger, and the strange bar. In the fading light Vahn made an attempt to inspect each item to determine what kind of things he had found and maybe some kind of value.
Once he had attempted that he would cross the dwarfs arms over his chest and forever close the man's eyes. Standing up slowly Vahn found his way to the next body and ever so cautiously checked to make sure the small being was alive.
The small creature, which turned out to be a gnome from the looks of things was indeed still alive, though her breathing was rasped and shallow with a slightly wet sound to it. It didn't seem as though her life was in immediate danger, though attempts at rousing her seemed ineffective. (yeah, I'm pulling it that way even though you're a cleric she's not online much till friday so you have to bring her along rather than just heal her till then! >:O )
The small creature was alive, unconscious but alive. Taking the time to make one more attempt at waking the gnome up Vahn was content that it was no longer in his favor to keep trying with the sun going down. Rolling the gnome over so that breathing would be easier Vahn took off away from the beach scanning and testing out rocks so that he might be able to produce fire with whatever wood he could scrape together around the area.
As Vahn searched around in the dimming light, the presence of stones were notable here and there, but the kind was tough to tell in the dark. Upon attempts to see if they might spark, none of them seemed to be of the sufficient caliber to make such reaction. The sun was quite far down by the time he was done, and though the night was warm, the cloths still soaked with sea water were getting rather cold, the metal of his armor not helping.
Despite all of his efforts finding stones that could spark wasn't going to happen today and changing his tactics to starting a fire from rubbing sticks together wasn't going to go over well with how quickly the sun was sinking. As the sun sunk the chill of the night began to hit Vahn's soaked clothes and slight shivers began to erupt around his body. With no fire to return to the best he could do was build a shelter to block the wind. Returning to the shore and the wreckage Vahn found the planks and wall of decking and tried his hand at building a shelter.
She was dreaming. She had to be. The sun was shinning, the smell of fresh baked food still hung in the air. She was standing in a field. This was the field that was just south of her home. She was home! Oh, she missed her mother so much, and her father! How wonderful to be home! She started running north to her family. Once home, she tried the door and found it locked. So she knocked on the door, or at least she tried to. Her hand went right through the door. She gasped and jumped back away from the door. She looked around and tried to knock again. And, same as last time, her hand passed right through the door. This time she stepped through the door, and found her home in shambles. She wandered through the house trying to piece her thoughts together. Why? Who? When? Where is everybody? Is this my fault? She had just left the kitchen when a woman, just a little taller the she was, stepped around the corner. She stopped and looked at Aurora as if puzzled, then she looked as if she understood something “This is no longer your home child. You do not belong here. This is what would have been if you had stayed with your family, but this is no more. You have saved your family. But, you cannot linger here. You must return, let your heart rest and be well.” And her home vanished.
Aurora coughed, and it burned. She ached all over. She opened her eyes to darkness, and began to assess. She would leave her dream to think about later once she was sure she was safe. She was lying on a beach, it was dark, and she was cold. She tried to sit up and winced as a pain in her right shoulder caused her to fall back down. Being careful to avoid putting any weight on her shoulder she sat up and slowly looked around at what she could see. To the right there were planks and other minor debris from the ship, what looked like a body down the shore a little bit, water at her feet. Turning her head to the left she saw a human! Or at least it looked like a human, taller than her and didn't seem to have any distinguishing features that might mark him as something else. It was hauling away bits of the ship wreckage. She wanted to call out to it, assuming it would be friendly, but no sound would come to her lips. She tried to wave, but taking her weight off her left arm caused her to fall back over, she was just to tired to hold up her own weight by strength alone. She huffed out a rough sigh of frustration.
Vahn's attempts at making a shelter were flimsy at best, and it took several tries just to get the lumps of wood to stay up. It would likely keep almost no rain out and if knocked into it would probably fall over onto itself, or anyone who might be unfortunate enough to be within it. The added fact that they were on sand did no assist in the matter.
So it wasn't the best shelter ever, and there was no fire to keep him warm. This wouldn't get Vahn down too much but just how much would fate conspire against him today? Sighing heavily Vahn prayed that somehow Pelor would see his plight and smile on him with either a fire or some kind of blessing. Taking one last look around Vahn wondered how quickly said miracle might come if it did.
perhaps such a blessing wasn't so far off, though not quite in the manor believed at first. Who could say, for some, Gnomes were a issue in of themselves. Though, out of the corner of his eye Vahn noticed moving coming from where the gnome lay.
His shelter a mess Vahn had prayed for a miracle of some sort but rather than what he had originally thought might be a great miracle like fire or his shelter magically getting better. Instead the small person that had washed ashore and been knocked unconscious was stirring and while they made no noise the movement of small arms caught Vahn's attention. Reacting as one might to a ghost Vahn jumped startled at the sudden movement.
Regaining his composure though he walked over to the person and gave them a wave of greeting before asking, "Are you all right? Can you remember anything from before washing ashore here?" These were basic questions to gauge the health of a person that had been through something as nasty as a ship wreck and whether or not they retained memory would greatly gauge what might be wrong.
Excellent! He noticed me. Aurora sat up again, carefully keeping her weight off of her right shoulder, and turned to look at him. She thought about his question, what did she remember? She thought out loud “I remember I was traveling, I had just left home. I had boarded a ship. Oh! There was a terrible storm; I thought I wasn’t going to make it the whole trip without making a fool out of myself. But then, I remember the ship sinking, I couldn’t get out. I must have made it out huh?” All of this came out in a raspy painful whisper, and she touched her throat gingerly. She looked out toward the sea, “I knew I should have stayed on land,” She turned back toward him, “who are you and do you know where we are?” She shuddered from the cold and from her fear of this unknown place.
Well, all the details weren't there and her voice was extremely week but she wasn't suffering from memory loss. The fact that Vahn had been unable to make a fire made seeing the small girl pretty much impossible. Either way as long as she made some sort of noise he would be able to keep track of her. In response to her question he replied, "My name is Vahn Fielderson, unfortunately I don't know where we are."
Taking a wary glance to the sunset Vahn figured they would have to finish up anything else they needed to right now or wait until morning. "Are you alright to move? I've built a... structure that we can rest near. Unfortunately though I wasn't able to find anything I knew to use to build a fire in a timely manner with," he explained waiting for the gnome to reply before moving back to his shelter.
"Vahn, my name is Aurora Mageweaver" She was glad to have a name for this stranger, "Did you save me?"
She pushed off the ground with her left arm and stood and rocked to her left foot immediately because her whole right shin was on fire. She tried to limp forward a few paces, the soft sand gave underneath her and made it very difficult "this might prove to be a little difficult for me apparently."
Suddenly her face turned down into a heartbroken look of dismay "Oh, Oh no!" She sobbed. "My staff was in my room on the ship! What have I done!" She turned back to the sea and sobbed softly at the loss of her staff.
The gnome appeared to be struggling with an injury that she had received in the shipwreck and even though she couldn't stand on her own very easily it did appear that she was fine to move. From what Vahn could tell he might have to help her but the difference in height would make that rather difficult without just carrying her.
In response to her cries of a missing staff Vahn wasn't sure what to do, he hadn't lost much in the wreck which wasn't easily replaced. "Maybe it washed ashore somewhere. We can try looking for it in the morning if you'd like," he replied quickly making his way to the gnome's side and helping her over to the dark empty shelter.
She let him lead her to the shelter, and sat down to get her weight off her leg. "I hope you're right. That staff meant a lot to me, I've had it since my coming of age, there was a lot of sentimental value to it." she sighed, "I hope we can find it somehow."
She checked her pockets, "My spell components are ruined but I can still take a watch so that you can rest if you would like me to. I can still cast a few spells to defend us if need be." Then she looked down at herself, "good thing I can still see pretty well in the dark because I don't think I could get very far on my own, to watch."
The gnome seemed to take solace in the fact that her staff might be somewhere nearby and there was the possibility of finding it in the morning. Of course the likely hood of one small piece of wood from the sunk vessel floating all the way to this place with them was highly unlikely. At the mention of ruined spell components Vahn could only feel a slight bit of dread, if it were up to him to defend them from wildlife or otherwise he would wear out quickly.
That being the case Vahn was relieved when Aurora said she would still take a watch. Nodding his head Vahn replied, "Thank you, I'm having trouble seeing what's in front of my face right now so if you have any kind of ability to see in this darkness you're faring better than I." Slowly dropping into a laying position Vahn decided it might be best to keep his armor and other items on while he rested. Before closing his eyes though he made mention, "If you start to feel tired feel free to wake me and I will take over on watch."
After Vahn had laid down Aurora worked to make it so that she could face away from the water, figuring that little would be coming from that direction.
She did her best to keep her eyes and ears alert for anything that might mean her or Vahn trouble. She she could only stay focused on what wasn't there for so long and let her mind wander to her 'dream' and what it might have meant.
the sounds of the night were quite nerve wracking to the small wizard as she waited. The night seemed to be churning in the dark, with little to no visual affirmation to the sounds. In addition to this, there seemed to be movement when there was no sound, as though the world and the sounds it made were not in sink. Leaves and brush crunched, sand shifted, and waves rolled in, all sounding as though there could be some creature hidden in the sound. But despite this, she managed to stay awake for a fair amount of time, till at last her eyes grew heavier her fatigue began to beckon her towards it.
Bright colors and sounds surrounded her. The faces of her friends and family were oddly mixed in within the bright colors. The sounds were them whispering secrets to her, but she couldn't make out what they were saying. After struggling to her feet to try and hear them better she realized that she didn't have difficulty standing, and reality rushed back to her, she had fallen asleep!
Aurora opened her eyes wearily and looked around her. Not much had changed since she had fallen asleep so she must not have slept long. She decided that it was time to wake up Vahn, if she was going to sleep she might as well do it knowing someone was watching her back. She slowly stood up to go wake him.
