First. This is a vampire roleplay. No, no, don't run away, please. This isn't Twilight.

You see, I'm a horror fan. I love scary movies, always have. I also love the myth of the vampire. Specifically, the original myth. I don't like the idea of the redeemed vampire, or the friendly werewolf. These creatures were monsters, nothing more, until silly people got their hands on these creatures and tried to humanise them. So, I'm making an RP to bring the fear back to the fangs.

So, here's the plot. I hope you like lots of words.

Mark of the Vampire

Wallachia, 1458. Five years ago, the Byzantine Empire crumbled under the heel of the Ottoman Turks, and now Vladislaus III, Voivode of Wallachia, fights to keep his own principality alive. However, he has brought terror in his reign, slaughtering boyars and impaling all who oppose him. Still, the people remain upon his side, fearing for the loss of their own home to Muslim invaders. However, the Ottomans make more advances every day, and it is beginning to seem hopeless.

Zoom to a small village in the South called Lacul Durerea. There, the people have faced an ever-switching rulership, currently under the power of Wallachia but not so long ago controlled by the Turks. It has near only 200 hundred people living there, but recently, they have begun to drop like flies, their bodies floating in the saline lake, drained completely of blood. The priests switch between blaming the Muslim Turks being the cause, to the Voivode's alliance with the heretical Catholics being the source of God's wrath upon them. But some are whispering the word "vampire"...

Rules of the Vampire
(these are based upon mythological rules, not modern rules)

  • The Garlic Flower repels vampires, and hanging a garlic flower over your door may do enough to keep you safe
  • Staking a vampire will pin them to ground, and render them immobile
  • The proper way to kill a vampire is to cut off its head while it is sleeping, and place the head at its feet.
  • Those who have been preyed upon by the vampire can be prevented from turning into one upon at death by cutting out the vampire's heart, burning it, and making an elixir of the ashes for the victim to drink.
  • The vampire is not at all the person they were in life. Their own soul has gone to damnation, and a demon has taken the place. Thus, vampires are incapable of being good, or anything less than the most evil being possible.
  • Vampires look like corpses. Their bodies bloat, they smell of rot, and sometimes they turn odd colours, like black or green. This is slowed down significantly by feeding upon humans.
  • Vampires instinctively go after their loved ones first, and that is why the relatives of the vampire are always the first to go in a village.
  • Vampires can take the form of a pumpkin, or turn invisible if they so choose.
  • Supreme agony is caused in vampires by the sound of Church bells.
  • Vampires are not harmed by sunlight. They simply hunt at night since that is when everyone is sleeping.

Now, to give you an idea of the village, it is a small one, next to a saline lake. The town square is a small market, where the people there sell whatever they can and bring home some goods. The local chapel is a tiny stone building, 10 by 10 by 15 feet, with stained glass windows and icons upon the ceiling. Around the villages are several family farms, not capable of producing much thanks to the arid conditions but still survivable. They are scattered, without any real pattern. Further south is where the most recent battle took place, some few months ago, and now several poles sit high in their air, Turkish bodies still barely clinging to them.

Now, for the Character sheet.

Code:

[b]Name[/b]:
[b]Age[/b]: (I do not mind child characters, and actually find them great in a horror RP, so if any of you want to, go ahead)
[b]Gender[/b]:
[b]Ethnicity[/b]: (I would prefer Slavic/Balkan groups and Turks, but if you can make a good argument for someone of a different ethnicity beinf there, go ahead.)
[b]Occupation[/b]:
[b]Social Status[/b]: (The general grouping is poor = Serf, poor but free = yeoman, middle-class = bourgeoisie, and wealthy = boyar)

Name: Bojidar
Age: 34
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Bulgar
Occupation: Huntsman/rebel
Social Status: Yeoman
Biography: Bojidar was born as a bastard, from a young mother who lived out in the community and a man who she never saw after that night. She herself was a seamstress in Plovdiv, but had to work hard thanks to the prejudices against her and the changing social strata. Still, she succeeded in raising him, getting Bojidar a job by apprenticing him to a hunter who hunted high-priced game. This gave Bojidar the skills he needed to survive in the wild, which he felt called to. More and more he spent his time outside of the city, until he reached the age of sixteen, where he finally bid his mother goodbye and went out on his own.
For the most part, he simply went from town to town, trading whatever he hunted, but as the Ottomans gained more ground, he felt obliged to do something about it. So, he began working with militias and armies to help fight off the Ottomans wherever they rose. Sometimes he got captured, but he was always broken out before he could be executed. But as time went on, the Ottoman forces got stronger, and when they toppled the Byzantine Empire, Bojidar lost the fight in him. So, now he's back to just wandering aimlessly, going village to town to the occasional city and selling his wares.
Recently he has come to Wallachia out of interest, hoping that perhaps the new Voivode can keep control of the region out of Ottoman hands. Maybe then, he can fight again, with new hope for his former cause.
Appearance: Bojidar is a tall, stocky man with a thick black beard on his chin, tied into a braid. His hair is wild and curly, made long from the fact that he never cuts it. His skin is ruddy and dark, with some heavy scars on him from the battles he's been in, though a lot of them are just from living in the wild. His eyes are a deep brown, sunken in but still vibrant enough to look like perhaps they belonged on an animal.
He has only one pair of clothes, like many people for the day: A thick, heavy coat with a wolf-fur trim down the middle, head together by cord and bone pegs, a pair of rough green canvas pants, and leather boots enforced with bits of iron. Over that he wears a leather cloak, and a pair of leather gloves actually meant more for falconry than anything that he may use it for.
Possessions: Iron short sword, silver crucifix, 3 gold pieces, a yurt, one Arabian horse, a Sipahi Cavalry musket, all clothes mentioned, 15 musket balls, a rucksack, and 1 quart of Greek wine.

You forgot about using bolts and other weapons drenched in holy water as a way to kill vampires or atleast by the old myths, oh and wolfsbane from a werewolf.

Also if it accrues enough interest then I shall be joining.

I doubt I'd use werewolves since they're more France/Germany, but thanks for the other thing. And I'm glad to hear that. Much appreciated.

Well a good vampire hunter would carry anything effective on a vampire. They just have to beware the wolfsbane from a wolf since it in turn makes them stronger instead of weakening them.

I suppose. I'm hoping more to focus on the horror aspect, but okay.

This looks really good, but I'm not sure I'm up to the level of role playing. I'm rusty and the amount of detail you put into your work is a little daunting. And I'm not really familiar with all of the history and folklore. I just know the basics of "real" vampires.

I am interested in the horror aspect of it though, I haven't been in a good horror role play.

The folklore there is really all you need to know. Just use that as a reference if you do join.

I know the historical connection is a little difficult, but you could easily play one of the villagers, who are pretty much in their own little world so you don't need to know much about the history of the region at all. Orthodox Priests, Turkish cavalrymen, farmers... They're all people affected by this so there's a lot of different kinds of things you can play without having to know too much.
