Accepted. Though after this, I'm not accepting any more Hawk Shifters. I might take one more Raven Shifter, and I will definitely accept humans. I'll be posting my half-breed in a few minutes. And once we get another human after him, I'll post the IC topic. But we do need more humans. |

Name: Samel Age: Appears to be in his late teens, but is actually in his thirties. Gender: Male Race: Half-Breed (mother was a human, father was a Raven Shifter) --If Shifter: n/a Role/Occupation: Mercenary (Second-in-Command) --If Leader: n/a --Of Other: n/a Side: Mercenary Alignment: Neutral Appearance: Samel could easily be summed up as being short and scrawny. He is 5'3" in height and looks like a particularly strong breeze could blow him off his feet. He has shoulder-length black hair and eyes which are such a dark brown that they are almost black. A nod to his heritage, which he despises. He wears clothes which are loose-fitting, trying to disguise how small he really is. He doesn't do a very good job of that, though... Personality: Samel is a quiet and shy individual. He doesn't like talking to people he doesn't know, and he tends to hide behind his taller companions to avoid being looked at too closely. He often doesn't make eye-contact with people as though that will disguise his eye color. But all of his shyness aside, he is brilliant. He is a strategist to the core, and he is a skilled navigator when at sea. His sense of direction is flawless, and when he does gather the courage for it, he can be very harsh and blunt in his words and opinions. History: Samel's mother was the wife of a soldier-turned-merchant. The piracy of the Shifters hit their business hard, and so the once-soldier decided to go along on his ship in order to fight off any attacks and defend his wares himself. Samel's mother went along with him. They were attacked while at sea by a flock of Raven Shifters, and one of them decided to violate her. She was impregnated by the Raven, and she hid the fact that she had gone through such an ordeal from her husband, who thought that she was carrying his child. She hoped he was right, and she fooled herself into thinking that the child she carried was indeed her husband's. That was dispelled rather quickly when Samel was born. Both of his parents were blond with blue eyes, and the sight of Samel's dark hair and eyes caused his mother to break down and confess what had occurred. The merchant tried to kill the newly-born Samel, but the mother convinced him not to. Half-breed or not, he was still her son. Instead, they hid Samel's existence, saying that the baby had been still-born. They buried an empty casket, and that was the end of the inquiries about the baby. Samel's father refused to give him his last name, and Samel never thought of himself as being his son. He was far closer to his mother, always hiding when his father was around. It was no mystery that the man hated him, and his mother never told him who his real father was. He assumed correctly that it was someone his mother was not married to, and the shame of being a bastard child kept him quiet and compliant with his mother's multitude of rules about when he was allowed outside and when he needed to stay indoors to avoid being seen. When Samel was ten, he overheard his mother arguing with her husband. The fact that his father was a Raven Shifter came up, and Samel couldn't believe it. He'd known he'd been a bastard, but to be a half-breed... That was too much for him. No wonder the merchant hated him, and to spare them the shame of having an abomination living under their roof, he ran away from home. He learned very quickly to keep what he was a secret. That was the only way he could survive. He'd heard what would happen to him if he was found out. Not only him, though. His mother would be hunted down and killed, as well. No one would care that she hadn't willingly conceived him. She was "tainted," and so she'd die as well. After several years of wandering and doing any odd job he could find, he eventually joined with a group of mercenaries. His sharp mind marked him quickly as an able strategist, and the mage of the troupe saw in him a great potential for magic. He was tutored in Elemental magic, and he quickly became a skilled mage, himself. It took only a few years for him to rise to the position of second-in-command of the group. His ideas had gotten them a good bit of money, but perhaps his worst idea was accepting this job of kidnapping a Heron Prince. Perhaps his own racism was fueling his decision, but he wanted to make all of the Shifters pay for what that one Raven Shifter had done. He wanted to make them pay for him ever being born. Weapons: n/a Magic: Elemental --If Elemental: Wind and Fire Other Information: n/a Edited by That Butler, June 13, 2011, 10:41 pm.

Name: Jiàn Wu Age: 28 Gender: Male Race: Human Role/Occupation: Mercenary Side: Mercenary Alignment: Jiàn's alignment is difficult to describe. He would without hesitation kill someone, human or Shifter, if paid to do so; however, he would just as quickly save that same human or Shifter--if paid enough. Otherwise, Jiàn just doesn't really care. Maybe that makes him as neutral as one can be--or as evil as can be. Jiàn Personality: Jiàn in all truth has no real sense of morality. His life is driven not by ethics but by one, materiel thing: money. Money brings anything and everything you would need in life--power, comfort, wellbeing, happiness. As such Jiàn finds no use for obsolete codes of honour or moralities, considering them to be mere impediments; he will take on any challenge, do anything, regardless of how morally low it seems, if the pay is high enough. Jiàn typically goes things solo, as he dislikes the thought of having to split the pay or the valuables found along the way, not to mention the possibility that some other fool he is forced to work with may ruin the job for him; he does note that mercenary bands tend to get better paying jobs more often. When he does work with others, however, he tends to act something like a stereotypical Raven Shifter--charismatic, silky, devious, and on the whole untrustworthy. One constantly gets the feeling he wouldn't mind letting a fellow mercenary get killed (or kill them himself) if said mercenary had something valuable Jiàn could take and sell; if the mission's pay is high enough, as it is here, however, he won't take the chance. History: Jiàn Wu was born in one of the small Eastern human kingdoms, bordering the Hawk Kingdom's lands. He grew up with no father; according to his mother, the man had left her after discovering she was pregnant. As a result, Jiàn and his mother were alone and utterly poverty-stricken, and through this Jiàn came to understand the great value money held to men in this world. He was forced to take every job he could get, appreciate every dirt-caked coin he acquired, to support him and his mother. His childhood passed slowly and laboriously in this manner. His mother passed away in that interval, but to Jiàn it seemed less like losing a loved one and more like the loss of a burden; the fact that there was one less mouth to feed (leaving, of course, his own alone) meant Jiàn would not need to 'waste' precious money on anyone else. With this kind of mindset, Jiàn realised that mercenary work appealed to him--in those days, in the Eastern kingdoms, one could make far more money being a mercenary for hire in the outside world than they could doing domestic work. As such, Jiàn soon left the Eastern kingdoms to pursue a career as a professional soldier. Fast-forwarding about ten years later, Jiàn is now one of the more well-known mercenaries in the outer kingdoms. For the past year he has been traveling with a band of fellow mercenaries (not that he feels any loyalty to them), if only because mercenary bands tend to get better jobs more often than solo mercenaries. As such, though the other mercenaries don't trust him nearly as much as they trust one another, having been traveling together for many years, Jiàn was recruited for the mission to kidnap Razael as well. Weapons: Jiàn utilises many weapons in his work, but his weapon of choice is one from his homeland--a miao dao two-handed sabre, with a blade easily reaching 1.2 metres in length. Accepted. I would be happy with another human in the mix, but this should be fine for starters. I'll have the IC topic posted later tonight. I'll post the link when it's done. But if anyone wants to squeeze in another human profile in the meantime... *is hopeful* |

Actually, I did recall that you used to have a whole Belkar theme going, so I reckoned you'd call me out on it. I only used the name Vaarsuvius because when I started creating the character I had just been (re)reading Order of the Stick. I'm sure we can all agree elf Vaarsuvius and Hawk Vaarsuvius are rather nothing alike

I like how all of the shifter royality names end in ael. Maybe that coupling signifies royalty to the shifters? I shall be making my mercenary shortly but I'm going to pm you Butler first for approval of my idea. |

I would prefer it if you didn't find their ship so soon. Samel hired a bunch of other ships to act as decoys, so chances are they didn't find the real ship yet. |

I believe that is how it should be, the ship being the mercenaries'. On the other hand, it may not be a good thing to have a violent encounter so soon in the story. I dunno, I'll wait and see what y'all think, I guess. |

I don't necessarily mind either way. If it's a decoy we can just force the answer out of one of the sailors. |

It would be very counter productive to the lifespan of the rp to initiate a conflict with the main ship so soon. |
