The Eisen house, a manor on the border of a small town just beyond civilization. Recently its owner had died and the house and just about everything the old man owned was passd on to the only living relative, Tera Hearn.
Currently Tera was driving out to the manor, not thinking about how this totally didn't sound like the start of some haunted house movie she saw a few days ago.
She had met with the old mans lawyer and learned that there was one maid in the house, about everything else she inherited, and to receive the keys.

Her car gradually moved closer and closer to the house, she could see that it was older, but not by much it looked like it was built just about fifty years ago and in fact it was.
It was a larger house, from the outside one could tell it had at least four bedrooms and possibly just as many baths. Its paint was a light grey color, not quite white but close. The main double doors were slightly larger than your average doors and the knockers were large iron rings.

Tera parked her car and stood walking toward the house. She had learned about the inside from the lawyer. It had exactly four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large kitchen, a fairly large dining room, large entry hall with stairs toward the back, a storeroom for the food, a study, and a miniature library. From that she could tell the building was huge, but standing outside of it was simply awe inspiring.

As she reached the doors she unlocked them, then pushed them open, surprised at the lack of sound they made.

"Hello?" She called as she walked inside. "Anyone here?" She expected to see the maid, see if she can't learn more about this place.

From the shadows emerged the small maid, the plain black dress that came down to her knees, coupled with the slightly worn apron identifying her as such. Her shoes were neat dress shoes that made an equally neat tap sound with every step she took. The entrance hall was silent, except for this sound.

The maid went into a deep bow, practically folding in two.
"Welcome home, my new Master." came her humble greeting. She stood straight again, holding her hands gently together. Though she would normally wait for her orders, this maid thought it only proper that she introduce herself, and her function.
"My name is Harriet Woodrow, though you may call me what you like, my master. I belong to you, and I am yours to command."

Harriet's eyes sparkled. It had been so lonely without a master to serve. She had never known freedom and frankly didn't enjoy it when she did have it.

Tera heard the foot steps as they neared, she moved into the manor completely and closed the door. Turning around she saw the owner of the footfalls, a young woman, about her own age, dressed in a basic maids outfit.
She was about to say her 'hello's when the maid bowed deeply. "I…I'm not your master. I simply inherited the house. I guess that does make me your master…" Tera sighed some then moved over and held out her hand to shake the womans, a light smile forming on her lips, "But I don't own you, I would prefer if you thought of me as your employer." She casually looked around some and added, "Can you show me around some?"

Tera didn't much like the idea of 'owning' the woman infront of her, and even just having her as a maid seemed to tug at Teras mind. But the woman did look cute, she had to admit that.

"Yes, master. I suppose it would be best if I showed you to your sleeping quarters first...? I shall bring your luggage up later, master, when you are done with me." Harriet nodded. Turning sharply on the spot, she calmly gestured for her master to follow her. She still had no idea what the woman's name was, but it was not something that she needed to know. To her, Master was Master, and that was that.

Tera was led up the stairs, through a doorway, down a small corridor and into an immense room. The master bedroom, clearly.
"Here is your bedroom. Your bed is made." she pointed to the massive four-poster bed in the centre of the room. Pulling an old key from a pocket in her apron, she firmly pressed it into the hand of Tera.
"The master key. It will open any door for you." Harriet explained.

The tour continued, showing the rest of the house. Everything was absolutely glorious, with paintings and busts of fine craftsmanship. There was not a speck of dirt or dust, as it seemed that this maid had spent the couple of weeks after her previous master's death doing exactly what she did every day.

They finished in the grand dining room, a long table down the centre emphasising the loneliness of it's situation with only one chair set at the end. It didn't seem like this relative enjoyed company that often.
"I should be preparing lunch soon. Do you require anything?" she asked. With a sudden start, it looked like she was about to burst into tears. "I have to get your bags first! I sincerely apologise..." the maid bowed again.

Tera was guided up, she was clearly growing uneasy about being called master a lot. She noted how clean everything was, clearly Harriet did a good job.
When they entered the master bed Tera looked around, clearly in awe. She had never been in such a place before, and the bedroom itself was larger than any of her old livingrooms. "Amazing." She stated before feeling a key pressed into her hand. "Oh? Thank you." She said with a smile.

The tour took the pair through the house, showing everything from the study, to the bathrooms, to office, and finally ending in the large dining room, with its large table and only one seat. She moved over and sat on the chair, her eyes looking down the table as a sigh came from her. "Were going to need more chairs." She stated. It unnerved her to see such emptiness so more chairs will at least help that fact.

She was about to ask what all could be made when Harriet became worried and seemed to be about to cry. Tera quickly stood and went over, pulling Harriet to a right position then smiling, "No, no. It's okay. I can get my own bags." She said with a smile, "You can go fix me and you something to eat. Oh and instead of master you can call me 'Tera' its my name."

"Yes, master Tera. If you wish to get your own bags, I shall fix you lunch. It is not too much to ask for me to do both..." Harriet finished on a somewhat pathetic note. It seemed she truly craved to do everything in her power to serve Tera.

"I suppose I could make lunch first, unless you have great need of the contents of your luggage? Unfortunately, we are low on food, as I have been unable to buy any more, so there is not much I can make." Harriet seemed absolutely dismayed that her master could not be greeted with a feast.

Tera gave a light laugh as she left the room, "Its okay, I'm fine with just a sandwich. Later we can go out and get some food."

As she got outside she gave a sigh as she opened her trunk. The maid seemed to live to serve. It wasn't right, "I guess I could try and get her out of the house some." She laughed as she pulled a suitcase out of the trunk. This was all she packed, everything else she owned was moved into a storage compartment.

Closing the trunk she started carrying her stuff up to her room, where she then proceeded to unpack everything, putting all her cloths into their own respective drawers.

Harriet tried to be as helpful as possible, despite the fact that she couldn't be allowed to carry the bag. Every door was pushed open and carefully shut behind Tera. When it came to unpacking, she immediately jumped in and started neatly folding clothes with an inhuman efficiency, placing them wherever Tera had put similar items. Once all was done, she quickly scurried back to the kitchen.

Several minutes later, the sound of a loud bell could be heard throughout the house. Lunch was served. It wasn't just a sandwich, despite the 'lack of food'. There was a large bowl of tomato soup, bread sticks and bread, butter, a bowl of fruit (though the fruit looked like it had been sitting around for a couple of weeks), and even a cup of rich smelling black coffee. Standing half in the shadows, as she seemed to do, Harriet was waiting.
"Please enjoy your meal." came her quiet wish, along with a deep bow.

Tera didn't really notice that Harriet was opening doors for her, and she liked how Harriet helped her put away her cloths. She thanked Harriet, but it was unsure if it was heard as the maid scurried away to the kitchen to make the lunch.

Tera spent that time in the library, looking over the various books, very little seemed to jump out at her.

When she heard the bell she guessed what it was, though it did startle her as it was quite silent up until then.
She then made her way down stairs and into the dining room, before she paused amazed at the lunch that was made for her. "Thank you, Harriet." She stated with a light laugh before moving over and sitting down, "Please, sit eat with me." She made her offer while extending her arms to a spot close by, "I doubt I can eat all this without spoiling my appetite for dinner. Besides I'm sure your hungry."

Tera smiled as she started eating, lightly dipping the breadsticks into the tomato soup to add some moisture to the bread as she ate it.

Obediently, Harriet left the room to retrieve a chair. While Tera's chair was an expensive looking thing, with cushions and even bits of gold, Harriet's chair was a work of simplicity. It looked hand-carved from a single piece of wood, and it looked like it was absolutely ancient. This chair probably could have worked as a family heirloom. She sat down next to Tera and waited.

Harriet was a little hungry. She hadn't eaten breakfast, as she had been too busy making preparations for Tera's arrival. She was yet to have lunch, though she might be forced to admit with a little guilt that she did taste some of her master's soup. Yet, it was not her place to eat lunch before her master, let alone with her master!

"I can wait for my lunch afterwards, master Tera. This is for you, not for me." Harriet smiled, proud that she could insist on waiting. Her stomach rumbled, betraying her true feelings. Looking away, the maid blushed a deep scarlet.
"M-My apologies for such a crude noise..."

Tera watched as Harriet left the room, then returned with an older carved chair. She sighed some at the sight of it.
Harriet sat next to her, but then insisted on waiting. But the maids stomach gave away her hunger.
"Mhmm…It seems like your stomach wishes for you to eat." Tera gave a light laugh as she broke off a piece of her bread stick, dipped it into the soup, then handed it to Harriet. "Here, eat." She stated before starting to eat her sandwich.
It was chicken, ham, and cheese. Mmm. This is good." She said before motioning for Harriet to eat.

Harriet took the bread stick nervously, chewing it down slowly and tentatively. With every tiny nibble she would closely watch her master, just in case she would snap out of this strange mood she was in and tell her servant off for eating her food.

But, all these strange courtesies were giving Harriet a bit of courage. With her bread stick finished, her hand slowly snaked it's way over to one of the apples in the fruit bowl. It didn't look particularly nice, an idea that was reinforced by Harriet's poorly concealed look of distaste. If she kept eating that, she was likely to make herself sick!

Tera smiled as Harriet ate. By the time the maid had managed to finish her slow eating of the single breadstick Tera had already ate just about everything else and was currently eating the soup.
However when Harriet took the apple Tera shook her head. "Ugh, don't eat that." She stated taking the apple before Harriet could take a second bite. "Its probably rotten or something." She pushed the soup over in front of Harriet. "Here, eat this."

Tera stood and stretched some, putting the fruit back into the bowl, making a mental note that it had to be thrown out. "Closest bathroom is in the main hall to the right correct." She asked while already walking out there.

Harriet looked particularly sad that the meal she had made her master was mostly being pushed off on her. Was her cooking bad, or had she done something wrong? Quietly, the maid sipped at the soup. It was delicious, of course. Her speciality.

Her master stood. Harriet stood too. It was dishonourable to remain seated while one's master stood.
"L-Let me show you where it is!" Harriet cried, rushing ahead of her master. Master Tera was certainly an independent spirit, something which Harriet found somewhat annoying. She couldn't help the master if the master was constantly helping herself!

Tera heard Harriet standing, and heard, then saw as the maid rushed ahead to show her to the bathroom. "Thanks." Tera laughed as she followed Harriet.

Tera used the bathroom, washed her hands, washed her face, then stood staring at the mirror for a few minuets.

Once she finally left the bathroom she went up into the study and started going over various notes the lawer gave her, trying to find the part about how much she needed to pay Harriet.

Needless to say she couldn't find that information so after much debate she just decided to call Harriet in and ask.

"Payment, Master Tera?" the maid looked confused. What was payment? Didn't the word mean something along the lines of receiving goods for a service? Well, that answered it!
"The only payment I require is a bed to sleep in, food to eat, and a master to serve!" Harriet bowed deeply, whipping up with a massive smile on her face. This strange new master seemed so insistent on giving her something for whatever she was doing, that maybe this would show her what Harriet was receiving! Who needs freedom when your cage is gilt so?

Tera took note of the confused look on Harriet's face, her mind slowly connecting the dots. It was a sudden hit that made just about everything that Harriet did fall into place. Why she was so dead set on making her 'master' happy, why she was confused by Teras actions, everything.

"Your…a slave." Her hesitant voice spoke what was on her mind but even then she didn't want to believe it. "I'm so sorry." She didn't actually believe it was her fault, but it was more for the pity of realizing Harriet probably never had a life of her own.

Teras head slowly fell to the desk as she continued thinking everything over.
She had recognized Harriets aversion to freedom, her willingness to serve. There had to be a way to slowly introduce Harriet to freedom, but slowly. "I will start paying you minimum wage." It was a start, seven dollars per hour, it would give Harriet some money, but then again what would she do with it as she probably never had money before.

"Minimum... wage? Do you mean like money?" Harriet questioned with a smile. The only use that she could think of for money was entirely altruistic. Buying food for the master. Paying for repairs to her master's house. Acquiring things for her master. All for her master.

"If you wish to pay me, you are free to do so," she bowed momentarily, "but if you want me to buy something, you just need to give me the money, and I shall go and buy it for you!"

Obviously, freedom just didn't seem like an idea yet. At least, not a good one.

Tera nodded some before standing, "Yea." She turned and walked toward Harriet, "If you see anything you would want just tell me."
Slowly she walked past Harriet before adding, "I'm going to go to sleep, tomorrow we are going into town to buy some food." She made sure to stress the 'we' factor for two reasons, first she didn't know what Harriet liked, second because Harriet didn't know what she liked.

Tera slept shockingly comfortably, she honestly could not believe how comfortable the bed was. In the morning, where she normally woke about seven, this time she did not. Her body refused to wake up and leave the bed which was just this comfortable.

Harriet followed her to her bedroom, but stopped at the bedroom door. From the sounds of footsteps (and the silent house was a perfect place to hear them), she didn't leave the side of the door for almost half an hour.

The rooms either side of Tera's room were the guest bedrooms. Her bedroom was a tiny thing down the hall, which she had only barely shown to Tera. It was simplistic and spartan. A small bed, a single pillow and woollen blanket, a drawer with possibly every item of clothing she owned. It was here she slept uneasily, worried about the welfare of her new master.

Many questions came to her during the night. Who was this woman? Why was she acting so strange? Did she dislike her new servant? Her sleep was sparse, and she woke at the crack of dawn with barely three hours sleep. She stood at her master's door diligently, awaiting Tera to come out. The poor girl was sleeping on her feet when Tera finally opened the door.

Tera continued sleeping until about ten, a first for her. She yawned some before getting up and stretching. She gathered her cloths and used the bathroom then got dressed. Splashing some cold water on her face to help wake up.

Opening her door she stopped to see Harriet standing there, asleep. "Wow…Sleeping standing up…" She wasn't used to seeing people sleeping while standing so it was fairly interesting. However after the initial 'wow' factor she carefully wrapped her arms around the maid, stabilizing her some before whispering, "If your tired you can sleep in. I won't mind."

Harriet jumped back in shock. Now that she had been sleeping for a couple of hours more, and with such an awakening as her master (unintentionally) gave her, she was wide awake.

"I-I am so sorry, Master!" she bowed with haste, close enough that her head almost hit Tera on the way down, "I merely wished to ask your preference for breakfast, but you slept for longer than I anticipated..."

Whipping back up, the poor maid was almost in tears again. It didn't take much to upset her, it seemed, especially when she was out of her element. Not to mention, she was blushing a little. Her master had been so close...

"No Its my fault really." Tera laughed, "I slept far longer than I intended to." She stated.

She had to admit the maid was very cute, and she seemed to make the maid get a little flustered. She noted that the maid was blushing some. "Why don't we go out and stock up on food? This was we can throw out the old rotting food. Plus you will have more of a selection."

"If you wish to go shopping, I ask only that you take me." Harriet bowed again, her composure regained. Normally her master would take her out to the marketplace, or the supermarket, give her some money and meet her back in a short amount of time. Harriet had a feeling that her new master wasn't going to leave her alone this time.

Any normal slave might run, given chance to. Harriet had been born, raised and grown to be fiercely loyal. The last thing she wanted was to leave her master.

"Do you wish for breakfast first? I shall prepare something simple for you, Master, so that you may continue your day."

Tera laughed some as Harriet requested to come along, "That's the idea, after all how are you going to tell me what you want to get. I might wind up coming back and finding out you needed x spice to make something. That just wouldn't be good."

When asked if she wanted some breakfast before going Tera looked toward the roof, "Sure, lets have some eggs. And by 'lets' I mean your eating something too."
