Zodiac's Game; Doomshifter and Tyberias

The room was falling apart. The strangely glistening metal sheets that made the walls were losing their lustre. The floor had collapsed in places, revealing an endless abyss of darkness beneath. The only piece of furniture in the room, an immense throne of pure gold, was bent and dented in places, the gems that once studded it now cracked and littering the floor. The only occupant of this odd place seemed pensive. He knew it was time for the Zodiac Game to begin again. His replacement needed to come soon. It was time for the universe to begin anew, and He was tasked only with finding the one who would make it. Twelve players would be chosen, each with the powers of their Sign. The winner would replace Him, and create the next universe as he or she saw fit. He sighed.

LET THE ZODIAC GAME COMMENCE WHEN ALL THE PLAYERS ARE AWAKENED, boomed His unnatural voice...

---

A blonde-haired girl, with sparkling eyes of blue, walked unhappily up the hill. Her date for the evening, the man who dwarfed her with his height, had suggested a hill-top dinner. It had been romantic at first, the idea of eating out under the stars, watching over the city lights. It was also the first time she'd ever managed to ask a boy on a date. But, with storm clouds brewing above them, Laila Jungfrau just knew that their date would have a turn for the worst.

Her dress whipped about in the wind and made it hard to walk too fast. She had very shyly attempted to brace herself by holding hands with the tall boy she walked with, though it looked more like father leading daughter than a couple hand in hand.

"Shouldn't we find cover?" Laila shouted over the whipping wind.

Travis Leon gripped his date's hand tightly, thinking it rather chivalrous considering the weather, but also kinda nice, just simple hand-holding. He couldn't remember the last time a girl just wanted to hold his hand, rather than hold something else. He could barely hear her request to find shelter as the wind howled fiercely, threatening to carry her away. She was rather small, but that never even came across as a problem to him. She was rather cute. I can't believe this. The storm came on so quickly.. There wasn't a cloud in the sky a couple hours ago. thought the boy to himself.

As if to torment the pair on their now almost ruined date, the storm seemed to worsen with every step they took. Thunder rolled across the sky in time with the lightning strikes that came down all around them. "Good idea!" He yelled in response, knowing that his voice carried a little more volume than hers. The boy scanned ahead through the heavy rain, searching for any kind of shelter. Trees were not a good idea for cover - least of all in a lightning storm. After a few moments of uncertainty however, Travis' eyes locked onto what looked like a hole in the hillside.

Judging the distance as best he could, the boy knew that they'd get there quickly so long as Lalia didn't mind a little woman-handling. "Hold on tight!" his voice boomed as he turned to face her. Without any more warning, he placed his hands under her arms and lifted her up into the air with ease. As she came down, he pulled her close to him, one hand under her butt keeping her from dropping, and the other wrapped around her back to keep her from falling that way. With his date secured, Travis began to rush off towards the cave. Adrenaline rushed through him as he ran, tearing through the rain and laughing with the thunderclaps.

And suddenly, they were inside the cave. "Well, that was a lot of fun!" He laughed rather loudly, setting Lalia down on her feet. The laughter soon settled however, and a serious look came over his face. "You alright?"

Laila squealed with fright as he grabbed her. She hadn't expected him to do that in the slightest, and the glow of embarrassment radiating from her cheeks could have evaporated the rain around her. If she wasn't soaked to the bone and about to be swept away by a storm, Laila would have slapped him silly.

As soon as her feet touched the ground, she stumbled back and against a cave wall. "P-Please don't pick me up like that..." she muttered, her voice trembling with nerves. Laila had felt like them merely touching hands had been enough, but a small part of her had this hint of thrill, like a forbidden pleasure. Despite it all, she was still shaking like a leaf from the cold, while her heart raced at a hundred miles an hour.

"M-maybe w-w-we sh-should m-m-move f-further inside, where i-it's w-warmer." Laila shivered. She had a strange feeling about the cave, as though there would definitely be somewhere nicer just down the way.

Travis' words were sincere as he glanced at his now slightly terrified date. He hadn't meant to scare her. "Sorry about that Lalia... I just wanted to get you out of the storm. It was absolutely shocking, don’t you reckon?" He asked, his head turning to stare out of the mouth of the cave. The rain continued to pour outside and white flashes lit the darkness momentarily as the lightning came down. The thunderclaps themselves actually made the cave shake; something Travis wasn’t too happy about. But then, his date decided that going further into the place was a good idea.

“Hmm..” was his initial reply. Hesitation was completely justified; the cave didn’t seem all that stable – like it had been sitting here through thousands of years of erosion. But regardless of that, he knew he was here to show her a good time, and she deserved no less. Besides, Travis was a brave boy – he could handle a possibly collapsing cave, no worries. “Alright, but stay close to me.”

Holding out a hand, he simply hoped that she wasn’t holding his actions earlier against him.

Laila grabbed his hand. She looked like she was freezing cold, but the poor girl was far too shy to make any comment on it.

As they proceeded further into the cave, it did indeed get warmer. The passage also widened out, allowing them to walk normally. The ground was even and flat, as though it was meant for walking on. The only problem was the fact that it was pitch black in here. There was no light, except the pin-prick of moonlight from behind them and a strangely warm glow ahead.

Within moments, they had reached a small chamber, light emanating from an unknown source. The sound of wind blowing over an opening could be heard here, and it generated an eerie atmosphere. In the centre of the room was a deep carving in the ground. It was a perfect circular shape, with another perfect circle inside of it. Around the walls of this chamber (which upon inspection was almost perfectly round) there were various other symbols with an uneasy familiarity. Directly above the shape on the floor was an easily recognisable shape; a carving of a crescent moon. That symbol on the ground seemed to tug at their hearts and minds, beckoning them to have a closer look.

"W-What is th-this p-place?" Laila shivered.

Travis smiled as she took his hand so quickly - it made him feel like she was still interested. As much as he would've loved to give her something warmer to wear, he was just as soaked as she was.. Thankfully though, and surprisingly enough, the cave got geniunely warmer as they ventured further in. Depsite the fact that the ground was flat, the poor boy sitll found himself stumbling over loose rocks and what not. Pitch blackness was really crappy for co-ordination skills...

As the wind rushed through, a chill was sent straight through Travis' spine. The place was really creepy, without a doubt one of them more eerie places he'd ever set foot - and he'd set foot in his Grandad's house, complete with hunted animals glaring at anyone who walked inside. As they entered the room however, and the light began to appear, it was clear that the place was certainly formed by man, and not nature. The symbols were honestly not ones that he recognised - he'd never been one for ancient or indigenous rituals. Heck, he wasn't really religious to begin with...

"I'm not sure.." his eyes flew around the room, it was officially creeping him out more than the Room of Death at his Grandfather's. However, it didn't stop him from looking out for his date. She came first, as it should always be. "Here.. Despite the warmth of this place, you still look a little cold." Slowly, he wrapped his arms around Lalia, holding her close to himself as he continued scanning the room. It was then he noticed the circle shape in the centre of the room. Surely he would've seen it as the focal point of the room from the beginning. But regardless...

"...Wait a sec.." he whispered, edging closer. The distance between them and the circle grew less and less, until finally, they were standing right on top of it.

As Travis and Laila stood upon the symbol, the sound of the wind changed. It sounded more intense, like the storm had picked up. There was no time to contemplate this sudden change in wind speed, as a very peculiar thing happened.

Travis and Laila could feel their bodies numbing, freezing up. They could barely move, or feel anything. A silver light from above shone out of the moon symbol, while golden light shone from below out of the round symbol. It felt like moonlight and sunlight was pouring out of these cracks, and the world around them was fading to white.

When everything stopped being so white, it was plain to see that they were not in the cave chamber any longer. The room they stood in was massive, as though they were ants in the home of man. The walls looked like metal, but seemed to be slowly rusting. In the centre, a throne built for a giant out of gold and gems, though those gems littered the ground and that throne seemed warped and bent. The same symbols in the cave chamber were repeated here, twelve around the walls, one moon on the roof and one circle shape covering the ground.

It was like as if one couldn't help but noticing all these things before the one thing that should have stood out - The occupant of the throne. It was almost like the silhouette of a man, with one glistening symbol on it's face. To look into the symbol on it's 'head', one could tell that it was staring right at them.

LEO AND VIRGO HAVE FINALLY ARRIVED, AND SO THE ZODIAC IS COMPLETE. boomed a voice with no origin. NOW THAT YOU ARE ALL ASSEMBLED, THE ZODIAC GAME MAY COMMENCE. THE VICTOR SHALL REPLACE ME AS GOD OF ALL EXISTENCE. THE LOSERS SHALL BE KILLED. YOUR POWER STEMS FROM THE STARS THAT YOU WERE BORN UNDER, AND SO SHALL THOSE STARS GRANT YOU POWER. THESE POWERS ARE TO DEFEAT THE PLAYERS OF THE ZODIAC GAME AND EMERGE AS VICTOR, WORTHY OF GOD HOOD.

I, PLUTO, SHALL GRANT YOUR POWERS NOW.

The silhouette waved it's mighty arm. In front of Travis, a lion composed entirely of flame appeared. It looked mighty, proud, energetic. With a roar it charged, leapt and passed through Travis, vanishing into nothing! A fire burnt inside his heart, as though the beast had moved inside of him. In front of Laila, a young woman composed of sand appeared. A thing of beauty, she reached forward and embraced Laila, before seeming to melt into her. It could be seen that similar scenes were occuring for other silhouettes, around them, the true forms and faces of which could not be discerned. These were likely the other players.

DO YOU QUESTION THIS ROLE, GIVEN UNTO YOU BY THE GOD OF ALL THINGS, PLUTO? OF COURSE YOU DO NOT. BEGONE WITH YOU.

A blinding flash knocked everyone unconscious. When Travis came to, they were lying in that strange, rocky chamber. The sounds of wind had stopped, and Laila was sprawled against him. Travis' body was filled with a strange and warm energy, but what it was or what it did could not be understood at this moment...

"...ugh.. What the crap was that..?" Travis groaned as his consciousness returned. His eyes scanned the room.. but it was no longer a room. They had been returned to the chamber. Who had all of those people.. no, all of those things been? Some had been human, he remembered that much. But some had definitely been far from even sentient. Vague short term memories showed images on a majestic lion in his head, red-hot flames covering it from head to toe. It had charged him, he could still feel the burning impact all over his chest and gut.

But, the strangest thing was.. it was indeed burning, but there was no pain.. The boy lifted himself up and into a sitting position. Now feeling the weight on his legs, he realised that Lalia seemed to still be out. What had happened here, it was all just a little too strange. And what the heck was 'The Zodiac Game'..? Travis repositioned himself so that the unconscious girl was face up with her head in his lap, both of his hands cradling the back of her neck and cranium. He ran his fingers through her blonde hair, and moved it out of her face. It was a surprise when he removed his hand and received a few grains of sand.

"That's not right.." he said aloud, hoping that she hadn't heard it. However, and needless to say, it was time for her to awaken. If he could get her to wake up.. "Hey, Lalia... wake up, Hun. Are you alright..?"

Laila's experience had been very, very slightly different, the difference being her perspective. It was not entirely unpleasant, the feeling of a sand-woman seeping into her, but it made her feel somewhat gritty and in need of a shower. Of course, wherever she was now was comfortable, and the girl was tempted to just lie there and never open her eyes. Unfortunately, her nerves got the better of her. She just had to see who was running their fingers through her hair.

"Mein gott!" she cried, scrabbling up to standing. The completely insane experience, coupled with the fact that there was a boy stroking her hair, was making her a little on edge. Laila stood back and stroked the sand particles off of her dress. Either that was the strangest dream of her life, evoked by a sandy floor, or she really had seen a woman made of sand jump into her.

"What in the world happened?!" she said aloud, her voice trembling. Laila was looking at the boy with an accusing glance. She'd never gone out with a boy properly before, and never alone in such a place. Who knows what this wild man could have done! Laila was flushed red with all manner of 'ideas' of that nature.

Lalia had shot up quite fast, so quickly that she'd caused Travis a slight aching in his groin.. The boy sat still, hands cupped around the area as though it would help; quite obviously just protection in case it happened again by some random circumstance. His date seemed slightly stressed out about something, possibly by the very same thing that had him puzzled since he'd awoken. But then he saw her eyes, and instantly realised that she was focusing on something entirely different. The girl was staring right through him..

"Eyeyeyey!" he vocalised, throwing his arms in front of him and shaking them from side to side to try and calm her down. "I swear that I haven't done anything to you. I was just trying to wake you up - Lalia, you were out cold." his voice was sincere and serene as he tried to help her keep her cool before she made any wild assumptions. But suddenly, the thought ticked over in his head. The recent memory returning. "Wait!" he cried, now attempting to scramble on to his own feet.

"Ok, I know that this'll sound a little crazy, but bear with me..." Piecing the pictures together in his head was harder than he thought. "Do you remember anything about a lion made entirely out of fire, or a girl made outta sand? Or, even better, anything about a Zodiac Game..?"

"Zodiac Game... mein gott, you mean that wasn't a dream?" Laila looked shocked, frightened. So, was all of what Pluto said true? From the sounds of it, there were 10 other 'players' of this game, each with a power of the Zodiac. They were to kill each other to achieve godhood! It sounded like a terrible predicament. This naturally meant that there were also 10 people who sincerely wanted them dead. It was all very quickly sinking in to her head. But, what if...!

Laila jumped back against the cavern wall, looking like a cornered animal, staring at Travis like he was the devil itself.
"Y-You're not going to kill me, ja?" she slowly sidled her way towards the corridor they came from.

The thought snapped in both of their heads simultaneously; for all they knew, the two of them were now targets to 10 other people.. Maybe even 11 others. As Lalia had jumped back, Travis had reached into his jean's pocket and pulled out his zippo lighter. Well.. yeah, that wasn't going to do much damage unless she stayed still while he held the blasted thing to a body part, and the draft calmed down... And heck, as if he'd try and hurt her.

The boy sighed at his lack of thinking. "Hold it, Lalia. There's no way I'm going to hurt you for a few reasons.. First of all, I really like you and me harming you is the last thing on my mind." he smiled softly then, hoping that she would see the sincerity in his words. "Second, we have a better chance of staying alive if we stick together - numbers will be a vital asset in this kind of game." He was indeed right on the money with that - it was just like that in all the video games he enjoyed online.

"And third, if we do get to the end of this thing, by that time I honestly don't think I'd be able to destroy someone that I'd been through so much with, least of all you.."

Laila stopped and stood straight, sorting herself out.
"I-I knew that. I was simply testing you." she waved away his words, all her propriety returned. "It's not like I'm going to fight you, but I won't hesitate if I have to..."

Her words were hollow. She was saying them because that was what she would say to anyone. It was definitively German to be a bit more straightforward than was expected or required, but it was also definitively Laila to pretend she didn't care.

"Well, we'll have to be careful then. So, you lead us out of here and we shall return home. I need to speak to Vater." she nodded. Her father, she meant. The man seemed kind-hearted, at least in that most fathers gave a stern warning when their daughter was being taken out while Laila's father gave him a wink, a nudge, and something (likely dirty) in German.

"Vater?" He repeated, unsure of the meaning for a moment. "Oh.. you mean your Father.. right. Ain't it a little earlier for me to meet the parents just yet..?" he joked, trying to keep the mood light, in spite of all that had happened. "Alright, we'll go pay your Dad a visit. You reckon he'll have an answer for us..?"

He wasn't really too sure of himself, and for the first time in a long time Travis was sincerely concerned for the safety of himself instead of the usual concern for the saftey of someone else. He'd always been the protector of others; a big strong guardian for all those who needed him. But what was he going to do now that *he* was the target, now that *he* was in danger. The thought had honestly never crossed his mind before.

"Well, in any case; the sooner we get out of here the better. Follow me Hun.." placing the lighter back in his pocket, Travis took Lalia's hand and began to guide her out of the hole they'd found themselves in..

Laila hesitantly took his hand, following him out of the hole. It was day time now. Seemingly, they had been in there the whole night. If that wasn't evidence enough of something strange, then it likely wouldn't take long to get greater proof.

Out here in the sunlight, that fire that burned strongly inside Travis seemed to pick up. It was like as if the darkness had been smothering him, and now he was free. Laila seemed to notice something different too, in as much as she was looking quite pleased about being on soft earth. It was quite muddy out here.

"Do you remember the way back to my house?"

"...How long had we been in there?" Travis asked, though he wasn't really looking for an answer. It was one of those.. rhetorical things. In any case, it was clear that it had been more than just a few hours. "Uh.. Yeah, I remember." he smiled back at Lalia, attempting to keep her spirits up.

However, when he turned back to get a look at her, she seemed alright.. If anything, she looked to be feeling more or less content now that they were outside. And come to think of it, so was he. The way the sun shone so brightly against their skin, it was enough to make the boy shout with glee. "It feels good to be outdoors again, don't you think?" this time, it wasn't a rhetorical question.

"The ground feels... nice, for some reason." Laila had a confused, but pleased look on her face. She could feel some sort of energy, resonating from the earth and into her heart. It was strange, but enjoyable.

Laila had almost forgotten that he had driven them up to the hill. It was cool that he could drive as it meant that they could go to lots of cool places. Going to the mountain had been an idea that was only possible with his car. It was as though fate had called to them. She got into the car and strapped in. Directions were given and a destination was reached. It was a nice little house, well-kept with a neat front garden.

Stepping out of the car, Laila ran up to the front door and straight inside. She likely meant for Travis to follow, but she hadn't exactly gestured or anything.

"Wow.. not a bad little setup you got here, Hun." he smiled as she left the car. He hesitated in following suit, unsure whether he was supposed to go after her. Surely it wasn't a heart to heart with her father all of a sudden. Stepping out of the car, Travis closed the door behind him and pressed the lock button on his key. With that, he walked up the driveway slowly, careful not to step too close to the plants. "I wish the garden at my place was this clean.." he chuckled to himself.

Lalia had left the front door wide open, so the boy took it as an open invitation. Making sure the bottoms of his shoes were decent enough to walk on carpet, he stepped inside, choosing to close the door behind him. The house was immaculate, just as the gardens had been. Not a single item seemed out of place, and nothing looked like it had been used yet.. It was crazily spotless. All the boy could do was whistle in shocked approval. Though it was clear that it wasn't Lalia's parents who seeked approval...

Laila had run off into the house itself. Travis had only been here once before, to pick Laila up in the first place. Somehow, her house retained an air of perfect silence and stillness. The only sound that could be heard as he walked in was the pitter-patter of Laila's feet as she ran further in the house. Her shoes were left by the door, neatly placed next to two further pairs.

Without warning, the door closed behind Travis and a strong hand took a hold of shoulder. This had also happened once before. The first time had been met with surprise, but this time it was easy to know exactly what grabbed him. Laila's father did this last time.
"Welcome back, Travis. I hope Laila did not trouble you too much, junge?" came his thick accent. The man forcefully span Travis around. He was a kindly thing, very large. It was obvious to see why Laila had decided to run home.

"Vater! Stoppen sie es!" Laila told him off. She had a backpack in her hand. It looked disturbingly full.
"Mein kleines mädchen, speak English when our guest is here!" the man laughed.
"Vater, this is important! I think something bad is going to happen! We went into a cave and there was a god-thing and a woman made of sand!"
"I see. We shall discuss this, then."

Laila's father seemed entirely serious about this. Could it be that he actually believed the first thing his daughter blurted out? Was it a trick of the light, or was the nearby book-case covered in books on the occult...?

((As a random statement; this is what I believe her father looks like; http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/284/6/5/fma_poster_major_armstrong_by_dachamp21x-d30kn1h.jpg ))

Travis could only stand there and accept Lalia's Father's friendly gesture. The boy was huge, to be sure, but when you placed him next to his date's daddy, ho-ly cow. It was like placing a small Dog next to an Eagle - in all senses of the word. The guy was slightly intimidating - but once you got past those massive hands and monstrous strength, he was a really nice guy.

But then, the conversation took a turn for the strange. Travis was rather puzzled as to why Lalia's father was so accepting of the events that had transpired in the cave earlier that day. A feeling in the pit of his stomach was beginning to tell him that something was about to go down. But for some reason, he felt ready for it; there was a warmness in his chest that he couldn't describe. It drove him forward, making him alert and ready for anything. "Wait a minute. What exactly do you think are we dealing with.. Sir?"

(( Haha, something like that, yeah. Also, might want to fix your italics there. ))

"It is as I have predicted!" the man stood up, gesturing wildly in the air. He grabbed a book from the bookshelf and slammed it down on the table. 'Games of the Gods' read the title. The author was a Valentin Jungfrau. Wasn't Jungfrau Laila's last name...?

"You see, the gods," he pointed harshly upwards, "they are cruel, fickle! Like to play games, you see. But there is one god who refuses to play the childish games, the only one powerful enough to play the game to end all games! He is Pluto, the mightiest of the gods! His game is that of the Zodiac, where 12 players are chosen."

Valentin, as that was probably his name, pointed harshly at Travis.
"You've been chosen, along with mein kleines mädchen. The goal is to be the last one standing and become Pluto, for he is dying. Mein gott, to think that it would be my own daughter... Laila. Gehen sie zu ihrem raum."
Laila stood and left the room. Obviously, Mr. Jungfrau had a word to say. With an intense glare, he leant in close.
"My daughter is meaning the world to me. You will protect her with your life, or I shall kill you personally. You are both in grave danger, but it is a man's duty to protect his woman."

A sinister note hung in the air as Valentin leant back.

Travis was completely shaken by what he'd heard. He'd have to fight... kill people in some sick game to see who was tough enough to take over a job suited to a God. The confidence that had been there moments ago, the very warmth of his blood seemingly stolen away and the fire in his chest burned out. Mr. Jungfrau was not a man who looked like he'd joke around about something such as this. Especially not if it concerned his own daughter. No, this was entirely real; a nightmare neither Travis or Laila could escape.

Suddenly, Laila was gone, a large - and once again intimidating - Valentin Jungfrau was bearing down on him. The lack of confidence dropped even further and the boy could feel his heart rate increase in his chest. He'd never felt such fear before. He was being told that there was no way out and that if he didn't stand by his "woman's" side and protect her, his remaining lifespan was sure to disappear in a flash. With those words, the fire within him flared right back, burning strongly once more.

"Let me tell you something, if I may, Sir." He felt the strength surging within him, and suddenly - in Travis' eyes - Valentin didn't generate such a frightening vibe anymore. "Laila means a lot to me; more than she knows, I think. If I was to even think about doing anything to put her in danger, I would first put an end my own life on my own. I will, time and time again, throw my life down, in order for her to live. Because truth be told Valentin. I'm in love with your daughter."

Come what may, he was ready.

Valentin inspected him with a harsh look, staring into his eyes. For a moment that seemed like eternity, there was nothing but those staring blue eyes. His heavy hand fell on Travis' shoulder and, finally, a smile broke out on the man's face.
"I can feel it in you, a fire for survival and a burning love. I haven't known you for long, but I can tell you are devoted. I leave Laila in your hands." he nodded. Standing and gesturing for Travis to do the same, he took on a somewhat mischievous look.

"You're going to marry my daughter, ja? You have my approval. I can tell that you and Laila will... will win." Valentin gave him another hearty slap on the back. There was something suspicious about his pause, but it was likely nothing important.

Travis was taken slightly aback by the sudden topic change, but nonetheless kept his cool. He'd thought about it a little while earlier, on the trip back. He was definitely into the idea, but it was still far too soon for anything like that to happen. A smile appeared on his face regardless, and as he stood, his posture changed - he looked taller, prouder than before. "Yes, I do intend to marry Laila." he nodded respectfully. "But if you would please refrain from telling her, Sir. I'm not sure exactly how she would take the news..."

The man slapped him on the back once more, in the exact same spot as the previous one. Though he tried not to show it, the boy couldn't help but feel his face twitch slightly as the massive hand clipped him on the spine. It felt like getting thumped with a two-by-four. "I have no doubt we will triumph." he smiled once more. And he knew that as far as he was concerned, neither Laila nor himself would fall.

"Just you remember, you will always put my daughter before even your own personal safety." Valentin pointed at him. Laila came back into the room. She had a bag packed.
"We are headed to the countryside, just for now. There is no chance of this all blowing over, but at least we will be safer in a place with less people." he nodded. "Are you ready, my dear?"

Laila nodded and grabbed Travis' hand. She seemed to want to keep him close.
"We will be okay if you're here to help, right Travis?" Laila smiled weakly. The gravity of the situation was weighing her down and it seemed like she was quite eager to be back outside. They went out and Laila walked over to the dirt. It seemed she wasn't wearing shoes or socks and was quite content to just root herself there. Valentin had opened the garage and revealed a very nice looking car, a big SUV.
"Our journey should only take us an hour away, to relatives in Foundation." Valentin informed them as he hopped into the car. Laila was staring into the dirt and seemingly hadn't noticed that they were to leave...
