The Mask of Millenia OOC

Anien. A world tormented by war, injustice, and evil. Kingdoms rise and fall in warfare with one another and with internal strife, and the people have long forgotten the days of peace and glory. Once, magic was used for healing and to uphold the former grandeur of the land; now, evil beings use magic to enslave, torture, kill, and destroy. Times of peace are few and far between--the story begins in one of these sporadic moments of peace, but that peace is not to last.

Tales have risen--tales, regarded as little more than rumour to those who know little of Anien's past--in other words, nearly all its people. These tales speak of an ancient artifact, a mask, which, when worn--should it judge the wearer worthy--will grant that wearer power unimaginable. The rumour is written off as untrue, but there are those few who know that perhaps there is truth to this ancient artifact. But even they do not know the whole of its truth--for the Mask of Millenia is far more wicked and evil than even the old tales indicate.

Three friends, their lives a story of tragedy and misfortune, see in the Mask of Millenia an opportunity to return light to their dark, tragic lives, or, perhaps, to shine light on Anien once again, to bring it from the despair and darkness in which it has wallowed. But they are not alone in their quest for the Mask. Three others, united only in their hunger for the mask, seek the Mask of Millenia as well--and they, unlike the three friends, are not afraid to wreak great havoc and evil in their quest.

The three others need not be evil--their intentions may even be good. It is their methods of gaining the mask at any cost that set them apart from the three friends who desire to gain the Mask without hurting others--unfortunately, their interests clash there. As to what I want from each character interaction wise, there will be a bit of combat here and there, but I'm hoping there will be more in depth development amongst the friends--rivalries, romance, friendship, so on.

About Anien

The Mask of Millenia

Basically the characters who are most necessary to the story are the three friends and the three 'others'--though other characters are certainly welcome; those who post here with interest are more likely to gain the character spot they want when the OOC goes up.

As a last note, I am not looking for RPers who will leave the whole thing to the GM. I am looking for RPers who want to be active in the making of the story.

Name: Marigold Thorne

Age: 19

History: Marigold is a orphan girl who lived alone in an abandoned building. She managed to find resources in and around that building in order to survive. When she first heard about the Mask of Millenia, she became interested. She wondered if this mask could bring her dead parents back, so she can have a family that'll love and support her. On her search for the mask, she meets two people that become her friends...and are, coincidently, looking for the mask too.

Personality: Because of her unhappy and lonely childhood, Marigold is often withdrawn and quiet. She rarely opens up to people, except for the two friends that she has. When she does open up, she is a hardworking, stubborn, and a girl of pride. When someone angers her, she becomes cold and merciless. Shooting the person with insults or threatening to knock them out with her sword.

Appearance:
Spoiler: click to toggle

Equipment: Marigold's main weapon is a sword, but she carries a dagger with her for backup.

Skills: Marigold is a skilled sword fighter. She learned it from watching other sword fighters from her "home".

Relation with other characters (this can be blank if you like; this is just for you to explain how your character feels about their companions; rivalry, friendship, or even romantic feelings):

Additional Information (anything you feel needs to be added that was not mentioned above):

I''m thinking 'Other' for this one.

Name: Dr. Avernus Cruor

Age: 28 years old

History:
His birth was a necessity thought up by an old man refusing to die without leaving behind a legacy. His mother was handpicked for her physical beauty and strong mental state. He was the third child birthed by the woman; his two elder sisters were discarded for being female. His father was a powerful and notorious magician who was responsible for numerous deaths and the intensive knowledge the human race has of magic. He might not have been the founder, but he was a well-known benefactor. His research wasn’t limited on magical experimentation on human beings, but on how the human body and mind worked.

Avernus was raised by this Death Magician to be a carbon copy and to continue his intensive research. He was taught everything his father knew, he was given all of his best qualities as well as his bad. His childhood was nearly non-existent. There was no time for playing; only time for studying and work. His innocence was ripped to shred as his father forced him to witness the abominable experimentations he forced prisoners of war to go through. He saw everything, and heard it all.

When the current lord was assassinated, his father’s fate was sealed, but Avernus avoided all blame; 12 years old and sent to an orphanage; a rather morbid environment full of children like him that saw their parents taken from them. There was hardly any food, it was cold but at least there was no bloodshed. Avernus remembered clearly his father’s dying words as he burned alive; his father’s eyes staring right into his soul was an image he’d forever remember. He’d continue his father’s research.

His magic powers were restricted at the time due to his young age, but his knowledge was extensive and is father specialised in blood magic. His father’s main theory was that the mysterious power that was responsible for magic was the embodiment of both the physical and the Spiritual and that the link was in the brain. The brain was an overly complex organ, and thousands of subjects died due to his experimentation. How was Avernus going to continue his father’s research stuck in an orphanage? The answer was evident. Avenus did not see the other orphans as playmates and the adults as a figure of authority. They were all potential guinea pigs. He did most of it at night, while his subjects slept.

Those that died in the process, IE waking up and having to be eliminated not to compromise his research, were turned into walking corpses. It was common practice among mages, though these “walking” corpses were just that walking. They use their magic to spark some of the brain’s basic functions and use them to do simple tasks, in this case he’d make them go away, walk in the forest to get eaten by hungry beasts. He wasn’t getting anywhere, and by the time he was 14, he had run of subjects.

The orphanage had been emptied entirely and Avernus didn’t see it fit to remain. There he wandered from village to village; an aimless drifter. He’d break into people’s homes, kill the people inside, experiment on their corpses, take their food and leave for the next village. He had people go after him, vigilantes, guards, but he always managed to avoid them. He was careful to only enter villages at night, and keep himself hidden in the wilderness. It worked, until his teens ended. He grew bored of the constant night travelling. He grew tired of going from place to place. He needed somewhere more stable. His erratic living arrangements were filled with unnecessary and unwanted variables. He realized he couldn’t get anywhere without constancy.

Since his experiments embodied the physical of human biology; he could pass out as a proficient doctor. A world filled with pain and misery, a doctor would be considered valuable. He knew more than anyone else how the human body worked, and what its limitations were; how to cause pain, and how to end it. He worked with people with many years, mending their wounds, and adding a few of his own. Things were much easier when they didn’t struggle and were compliant. He started off in a tiny village, and his reputation grew and he attracted more attention to himself.

He was employed by mayors, rich nobles and eventually he had them eating out of the palm of his hand. He didn’t use his influence to gain political favour, or to gain wealth. He wanted knowledge, obviously his father failed to educate him on all aspects of magic. He needed to study some more. It was during one of those long nights at a noble’s library that he learned of the mask; a mask that could grant its wearer power unimaginable. The possibilities were endless; perhaps with the mask he’ll uncover the secret of magical arts and technique.

No sooner did he learn of it, did he set off on his journey. He vanished once more as he set out on his journey, leaving everything behind.

Personality:
To describe him in a single word: cold. He’s emotionless, objective and pragmatic. The only thing he desires, the only thing he wants is to further push magical research, much like his father before him. The only thing that catches his attention is if it’s magical, then he’ll try his best to try and decipher it. He doesn’t care about human life, nor does he feel any guilt. He doesn’t feel any pleasure from his actions either, the only thing that matters are uncovering this power they take for granted, uncovering this body that was given to them and understanding the jelly like content that is responsible for everything.

Around people he says very little, though when he does speak it’s always in a soft-spoken voice. Speaking softly made people calm, when they were calm they were more receptive, the higher the receptiveness the more freedom he had. He’s not uncomfortable around people; just don’t expect him to start a conversation. He also has a strong preference for the direct route.

Appearance: He’s not impressive to look at as he stands at 5’4 and weighs barely 120 pounds. He’s thin and it’s apparent he doesn’t eat often. He has long black hair tied up into a pony tail, red eyes and pale skin. His traveling attire is a pair of rough boots, dirty green pants, a black long sleeved shirt with a slightly worn brown vest filled with pockets, above it all he has a big green hooded cloak.

Equipment: He wears a backpack that holds his essentials; food, surgical equipment and potions. There’s also the basic equipment needed in order to make simple magic potions should he gather the right ingredients. He also has a dagger on him, for emergency. There’s a large tome he carries with him, it contains all the notes and description of his experiments. It’s morbidly detailed and sealed with a spell.

Skills: He is a very skilled magician, and his specialization affects people directly, though he does need to establish a physical contact in order to alter ones emotions; fear, charm…. He doesn’t need one in order to stun them temporarily with a bright flash of light, or to frighten people with a spectacular light show.

His powers can also be used to heal others, to temporally boost a human’s normal regeneration, and degradation is possible, but both need physical contact.

Relation with other characters: None as of yet.

Additional Information:

He’s left handed.

He lost his virginity at the age of 16 and has two illegitimate children.

His natural eye color was brown, but trying to infuse magic into his eyeballs to gain night vision changed his eyes red without giving him night vision.

He’s very tolerant of alcohol.

His last name, given to him by his father, means “spilled blood” in latin.
King of Wackatopia: "I'll guarantee your safety, give you meaning, give you knowledge and something to believe in for the low cost of your personal freedom."

Fang: "Look at you, you're gorgeous, you're beautiful, and when i look into your beautiful eyes all I see is this magnificent elegant creature, full of grace, full of strength. You're mesmerizing. You're intoxicating. I want you near me. I want to indulge you."

Ryan: "If my survival means the death of innocents, then so be it"

Kyliden: "This one is strong. He's brave and takes what he needs. He's a better werewolf then i could ever wish to be."

Diego: "I can't control what i feel, querida mia. This spark will become a big lively fire. It will consume me, it will consume you and everyone around us, and once nothing is left, new life will spring eternal."

Wade: "She made me love her before she sired me. She wanted a companion, a friend, a lover to indulge her throughout the centuries. Her demise filled me with emptiness; she was to give me a purpose and now I'm alone."

Accepted, Wackatopia :)

Now for mine....

Name: Ivan Arcturus Venka

Age: 20

History: Ivan was born in the northern kingdom of Erebus during the height of the Erebus-Khador War. The war had been raging for four years prior to his birth, with neither power truly gaining the advantage; at times, Erebus was invading Khador, the next moment, Khador was pushing into Erebus.

The Venka family lived, as it happened, in a city that lay just beyond the border of the two kingdoms. Ivan was born into a time when the city was quiet and people hurried about their business, whispering of the threat of Khador forces, sometimes seeming to be just beyond in the mist. For the most part, up until the age of about five, however, Ivan saw nothing of the Khador forces everyone in his city seemed to so fear, and he grew to consider himself far away from the war and its casualties.

Unfortunately, it was not to be so. Soon after he turned seven years old, the forces of Khador attacked his little city on the border. With few defenses, the Erebus military being preoccupied in more 'important' theatres of battle, the city was quickly overrun. Ivan's parents just had enough time to hide their son before soldiers burst into the house. Through a tiny crack in his hiding spot, Ivan peeked out, unable to avert his eyes as he watched the soldiers ruthlessly cut down his parents and older sister before moving on to ransack and pillage the house of all its goods.

For days, terrified to go outside for fear of sharing his family's fate, Ivan remained trapped in the remains of his home, his fear of the soldiers overpowering the hunger and thirst that soon became overwhelming. After days of this painful interval, Erebus soldiers, having driven back the Khador invaders, returned to the house and rescued Ivan. For long after that, it seemed, he was unable to remove the sight of his parents' bodies, and the body of his older sister.

Many years passed, and Erebus and Khador began an uneasy peace. Ivan, aged seventeen, joined the Erebus military and began training in the arts of the sword and warfare. He was still disappointed, however, in the constant warring and suffering of Anien, and still remembered the pain of watching his family being killed. Thus, when he heard of the mask, and its capability to heal the long, torturous wounds of warfare and pain that Anien had for so long endured, Ivan set out, hoping to set things right and return Anien to an age of peace and prosperity.

Personality (should be detailed): One of the main aspects of Ivan is his strong sense of right and wrong. He refuses to harm innocents, and will only take up his sword for battle when he must, preferring to resolve conflict through peaceful means. He can seem withdrawn and quiet at times, but ultimately he is dedicated and unwaveringly loyal to his comrades and would rather throw himself into certain death than willingly leave one of them behind.

He can be very stubborn, especially where his friends are concerned. Once he makes up his mind, it's unlikely he will change it--even if he realises he is wrong, he'll stick with his decision just for his own pride.

Appearance: Ivan has wavy black hair that falls around his neck, and his skin, due to his Erebus lineage, is pale and cold. He stands at about 5'11, with broad shoulders and a slim but powerful build. Years of military training have crafted his body into a series of subtle but strong muscles; his eyes are almost black in colour, keen and sharp. He retains the armour of his time in the Erebus military, as well as a red cloak.

Equipment: The longsword, shield, and armour of the Erebus military, as well as a shortsword at his side, should he be unable to wield his longsword. His pack has the usual things such as food and drink, but in general he does not carry the more specialised items such as herbs and potions.

Skills: Having received training in the Erebus military, Ivan is a skilled fighter with a longsword and shield, and is also capable of fighting from horseback with skill.

Relation with other characters: None yet

I thought I'd leave it up to the RPers to sort of RP out what the kingdoms are like, but for the purposes of your character, I figured Nialan would be mostly desert and plains, with the second smallest population in Anien (before Erebus). Nialan is typically regarded as the weakest kingdom, with a subpar military and an almost nonexistant navy; it is technically ruled by a monarch, but the actual power is in the hands of the nobles, who keep the monarch as a figurehead.

Name: Millenia Burnsworth

Age: 21

History: Millenia grew up in a good family, never faced famine or any grave misfortunes and generally led a carefree life for the most part. All that was thanks to her parent's hard work who made breaking wars seem like such a distant thing. Both, her mother and father, however were more than aware of the calamities. It was Millenia's father who taught her how to handle crossbows. The lessons started when she was sixteen and almost every time she performed well during practice, the girl's mother would laugh and say that she seemed as if possessed by the Mask of Millenia... At first she thought it was a joke, but a couple of years later the remote village was attacked by a group of soldiers. In the name of their lord, those men searched each and every house in search of the legendary mask, everyone who tried to oppose got killed. Afraid for their own lives Millenia tried to flee with her parents, but they were caught and the girl was separated from her parents and taken into captivity.

Millenia came back to her senses only the following day. She found herself with two other people locked in a cage and miles away from her village. One of the two was a young healthy man, but locked with more locks than the cage they were in and the other was an old man, much like a druid. During the captivity, Millenia learned basic fire magic spells, but not being a magic user, she couldn't go beyond the beginner level. Once the Druid preached something about the Mask of Millenia, much like her mother did, but soon after the soldiers took him away and he didn't return. Coincidentally, later the same night, a group of thieves infiltrated the camp causing havoc in the very heat of which, all the prisoners were set free. That included Millenia and suddenly not-so-locked thief, who just happened to be their leader.

The next three years Millenia spent with the man's group of thieves. While there, she picked up a lot of new skills, tricks and, of course, information about both, the lord who was the cause of her misery and The Mask... By the time she collected all the possible information, the young woman had made a decision: find the mask, destroy the lord along with the artifact...

Personality: The young woman tends to be capricious and hot headed, however it doesn't mean that she has no patience. She'll endure...for a while and then let you reap what you sowed. On rare occasions, she might go amuck, but even on those times, mercy does exist in her vocabulary.
If befriended, Millenia is loyal and a tad possessive, she'll act selfishly, but put him or her above herself when it really counts.

Appearance:
Millenia

Equipment: a crossbow and daggers.

Skills: Millenia's quite skilled at lock-picking, using almost any kind of weapon that shoots (except bows, she's terrible at using them) and handling whips and ropes. In addition to those, she has the ability to create fire, nothing too elaborate, if fact she only found the power great or good enough only when she wants to make a bonfire or melt some locks...

Relation with other characters: None yet.

Additional Information: Adores shiny and sparkly things.
Her body reacts in a peculiar way when exposed to alcohol. If usually she wont do anything to draw people's attention to herself, when drunk, it's vice versa. She'll do almost anything to be in the spotlight and her patience grows even shorter.

Sorry for the delay, the pic took me ages to make presentable ^^;

Vyte, I like the character, except for one problem. Terribly sorry if I hadn't made this clear, but Anien is more or less at medieval technology...so they have no guns :/ So soon as you replace that with arrows, or something else, the character is just fine :D

Yep, soon as I enter in Descartes' character, we will need only one more for the 'friends' (I'm hoping a magic oriented character since the Friends are lacking in the magic department) and then we can get this RP going.

Yay, a happy mage to counter my apathetic one would be nice :3

Though it wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't a mage. From reading the world's history, magic seemed to be used for purely EVIL things, such as blowing stuff/people up.

I am pleased thus far, i can already see the possible confrontations Friends and others will have.

One wants revenge and the destruction of the mask.

One wants to shift Anien from a desolate place into a peaceful one.

One wants her family back.

Two have not been made yet and mine wants to unlock the truth behind magic at whatever cost possible.

This feels like "Rat Race" except three are united and three others are solo >:3

Ohhh, guess it would be rare to have 'good' magicians around.... If the third friend isn't a mage; then they'd need a healer; no matter how morbid he is ;)

Well, the key to each of the two different 'forces' (if you will) is their methods. The 'friends' are different from the 'others' in that whereas the friends don't want to harm anyone or do damage in their quest for the mask, the 'others' want it at any cost. It's not so much 'good guys and bad guys' as 'good methods and morally questionable methods' XD

So the intentions of the others may even be good. It's the way they want to achieve that intention that sets them apart.

To be wrong for the right reasons, or be right for the wrong ones.

How interesting. Hopefully we'll get that last friend, and Descarte's character.

Name
Fiona Celamine

Age
25

History
Fiona Celamine will not be remembered in the tomes of Nialan's history amongst the other houses of nobility. Her name, her record, her entire life story will be burnt the ground with the House of Celamine. It won't change the fact she existed, she lived despite what the other houses might claim. Fiona was born into the House of Celamine under Lord and Lady Celamine, a surprise to many considering Lady Celamine was barren. So thus Fiona grew up in the lap of luxury in one of the lesser influential houses of Nialan. Like most of the other children that belonged to nobility, she received training into being a proper young lady of Celamine and an education. Fiona had a relatively dull childhood, the breaking wars didn't touch Nialan as it sat along the southern shores. So the stories of wars seemed ever so far off and distant as Nialan nobility desperately tried to remain neutral through the coming strife that threatened all the kingdoms spilling into bloodshed.

Though it would be in Fiona's childhood that the legends of the Mask would come to fruition. For every child loves to be entertained and so thus the House of Celamine did have something akin to that of a jester or a musically-impaired bard. He told stories of a mask, a mask that virtually made it's user a god. From the moment she heard of it during her adolescence she wanted it, if only because of another lesson she learned during her younger years. To have power is to have it all, the petty manipulative games the nobles played with and against each other, the monarch of Nialan who is controlled by marionette strings, all of these paled in comparison to the power Fiona had in mind. The power she began to desire after years of education and training was something that could sadly only be obtained by the Mask. The power she lusted for what Nialan could never do on their own, establish power over the four other kingdoms to form an empire. A perfect Nialan empire which she knew the Mask of Millenia could provide if the legends surrounding it had the least bit of truth to them. Though her wish would change before her journey to something a touch more dramatic, and so much more ambitious.

War would spill over and mix with the manipulative games played by the nobles. Like a twisted form of chess it was strategically played only taking into mild consideration the people hurt in the process. So the other noble houses decided that the House of Celamine should take the fall for a political blunder. A political blunder which involved a botched assassination attempt on the monarch of Nialan. Bloodshed quickly followed the accusation, Lords and Ladies executed for treason. It seemed all to quick that Fiona Celamine would be the last Celamine to stay in the world of living, she watched the ancestral House of Celamine be razed to the ground, witnessed the executions of many she had called friends, but the other houses left her alive if only because of one ancient law that determined the exile of nobles based on the generation of those who committed the crime. Fiona let bitterness, hatred, and distrust grow as she crossed the border out of Nialan, the last of the now destroyed House of Celamine. Her wish for the Mask had drastically changed, no empire of Nialan, only an Empire of Celamine. What didn't change was her ambitious, inquiring nature of the mask, she remembers her childhood stories word for word, and she is determined to find the Mask of Millenia. One phrase reverberates through her mind as she begins the journey for the mask, 'All hail, Queen Celamine'

Personality
Nobility has a lot of connotations, some of them flattering others less so. Even through exile it seems old habits die hard for Fiona. the elitism of her former nobility still has carried over despite all the events leading to her journey. There is a haughty weight to her words which conveys that she feels she is superior over others. All the manipulative games the nobility played also effected her in ways that now are becoming increasingly apparent, she'll manipulate, she'll deceive, and she'll betray you just to make sure she stays ahead of everyone else. On that note she'll always carry a small smile with lilting words, and a noble's politeness when she does pull the wool over your eyes; though to be frank it is the only way she knows how to live. This journey is making her fall further and further away from the hopeful adolescent that she used to be, she found quickly that all morals could be compromised as long as it provides a better end than other means. Though the former hope and life of Fiona does remain in the smallest of ways, for when she does metaphorically 'let her hair down', she is mildly humorous in a snarky and snide way however, but does like a decent conversation every once in a while regardless of whoever it might be with. Her make-shift companions however do inspire her to be in better spirits most of the time, even though she begrudgingly follows orders she'll at least do her part to help their pilgrimage for the Mask of Millenia. Even the nobility know that things are much easier to accomplish with like-minded people, so thus the last of the House of Celamine will assist in any way she can as long as it doesn't squander her personal ambitions.

Appearance
Fiona Celamine

Equipment
Her person always has the standard herbs and medicinal plants one could expect in the standard apothecary. Besides the helpful materials which she uses to better her healing, she also carries with her a darker variety of materials for poisons and dangerous tonics. Though of course her mainline of defense is her silver tongue of sorts paired with a silver dagger to both metaphorically and literally stab someone in the back.

Skills
She excelled in the both the intermediate and advanced healing training that she had chosen to receive as a young girl. When she was exiled she quickly trained herself to brew a more dangerous variety of materials. Aside from her potions work, she is considered a decent horse rider and is quite lithe though she does not have any formal weapons training. She is a skilled diplomat when it comes to dealing with confrontations and can usually get herself out of many a situation by words alone.

Relations
(None as of yet.)

Additional Information
(Nothing important that needs to be added immediately)

Yay, now we have someone who wants to rule over the world! (Of Course!)

All we need now is a friend to balance out all of the moral ambiguity and we'll be set to go. :D
