There was a bit of a sickeningly moist sucking sound as the knife pulled itself free of the rodent's back. The rat thrashed and bit at Malark's foot as he set it on him but the position was wrong. However, after the knife was free, it bit at him again. And at the same time, there was yet another rat that was leaping at the farm boy. This rat bit also at his leg which was the easiest to target of his various body parts.
The man over to the side let out a yelp of pain as the rat bit down onto his forearm. The man started to dig his fingers down into the rats red beady eyes.

Tears ran down Malark's face as the second rat bit down on his unprotected leg. Despite the pain he was experiencing, the boy knew that he needed to help his other companion (who was also being attacked) and the woman from before.

Malark got a better grip of the bloody knife in his hand, and moved to stab the rat on his leg through the throat.

Aiming for such a small target on the throat on a writhing gnawing rat proved to be rather complicated because it was against his leg however the blow fell onto the creatures body anyways, and it hissed and let go in turn. It would appear that holding on when being stabbed was not a dire rat's strong suit.

The man to the side had managed to the rat off of him, his shoulder and arm of and his other hand now bloody. His shoulder and arm from the sizable bite left in him, but his other hand from the bleeding holes in the rat's head where it's eyes used to be. the man had gouged them into nothing with his fingers, and the rat was now hissing and writhing on the ground as well, which the man took to stomping the little bastards very out of.

Fearing he was going to be bitten again, Malark moved away from the two, dying rats and made his way over to the man from before.

"How many could be left?", Malark wondered.

The man managed to stop smashing the squishy moist juts out of the dead rat after a moment and huffed. "I have no idea." He said. "you were down here, how many were there?" He pointed out and nursed his right shoulder a bit as he looked about.

This of course didn't rightly matter because soon as they had finished the task thus far, the poor woman on the crate ran over to the stairs and bolted up them.

Malark looked up as the woman ran up the stairs.

'At least that's one person I don't have to worry about.', he though, relieved that she had gotten out safely.

He looked at the bloody mess of rats on the floor, then over to the man, and his wound.

"Maybe we should go." He pointed his thumb at the stairs.

The man smirked and turned starting to make his way up the stairs, each step slightly wet, and leaving a moist bloody footprint on the stairs. He got up to the top of the stairs and called out. "someone get me something to drink." He swore rather unpleasantly and walked over to some men who were curious as to what had happened.

As Malark climbed the stairs, he couldn't help but realize how much damage he took.

Now that the adrenaline had run out, each bite inflicted on him was as fully painful as intended. Still, Malark didn't think too much about the toll it would take on his body. Instead, he wondered about the rats themselves. Obviously, those were not normal rats (even he could tell that).

Where had they come from?

Why were they so...vicious?

Then again, maybe he was just overthinking it....

The main room was in a low chatter. The patrons talking amongst themselves. The man who had come to help him was headed out the door. Several patrons looked to Malark as he reentered the room and a few gave nods of approval. Though one, noting his condition walked up. "Ye'd best run ta the Doc with him as well." He said.
The town was too small to have a magic healer, instead they simply had a man who know how to patch people up. It wouldn't heal the wounds, but it would help to keep them together while they healed.

Malark picked at the disgusting caked blood on his arm.

"Um...alright," he answered absentmindedly.

If not for the pain he felt, Malark wouldn't have thought that he was really injured.

It just didn't feel real to him.

Where Malark was raised, he had gotten many cuts, bruises, and broken several things in his body by accident . But never had an animal (or anyone else, for that matter,) ever actually hurt him with such intent. The mere thought that someone had so much hate for him, even if they were rats, made his stomach turn in a very distressing way.

He raised his deep glare from his arm, and looked up just as the other injured man was leaving.

Following the patron's instructions, Malark dragged himself over to the exit, and opened it, never laying his eyes on anything other than the door.

The small town's doctor was really just an old woman whom had learned how to help patch people up through her years and learned natural remedies. She lived a little bit off the main town. When they arrived at her home the they were greeted by the elderly woman. She motioned for them to come in and started working on patching up the man's shoulder while she had the young girl who lived with her start work on applying some salve to Malark's arms. The girl was learning the elder woman's profession for when she herself was grown. It was a respectable position to hold. The salve smelled slightly and felt odd and stung a little, but the girl assured him that it was to help it heal faster.
