personally, I like the D&D elements in the rp game...it gives everything a bit more definition to what you can and can't do to NPC's, creatures, and other players...

October 2010 MOTM!
I myself am not really that concerned about it either way. Granted I think that setting .hack into a D&D style system with classes and so forth makes it interesting, but at the same time takes away the concept of it really being .Hack and makes it more of a remodeled DDO. (Dungeons and Dragons Online for those who aren't familiar with it.) I'm willing to go with what ever you decide.
Though regardless of what you choose, I think that it is very off putting for a RolePlayer to come in and see the mixture of all of this and not a clear defined explanation and set up in the first few posts. So I'd recommend personally that when it is all worked out and we know what it is we're going to do and have the setting fixed, you go back and possible close this one and start a fresh new one that isn't so wide spread.

I went all 14's because I was wanting a nice even balance to it you dork. Also on that note I'll be going with the extra HP for the favored class. On that note, are we maxing HP? I don't quite know whether we're continuing on or scrapping it and going with the original .hack classes.

@Jester: You're very right. I didn't get all the information up there before people started posting and everything ended up unevenly placed around the thread.

@Kira: I agree with you whole heartedly. Mechanics allow for defined abilities, actions, and progression. But the price in this situation is far too high. I am considering attempting a hybrid between having mechanics, and not having them. The idea is that for critical encounters, such as chapter finales, pvp, and "boss battles". For those characters who are created specifically for PK, PKK, and tournaments (all of which will be available in the game itself), making D&D characters will be required. But forcing this upon the people who just want to RP the .hack world and experience the plot I have in store isa little cruel... or at least that's how I feel about it now that I've come this far.

honestly...a little extra time on a character is a small price to pay for a quality rp...especially something like .hack

more often than not I found that the more time I spend on a char the more I develop them and more quirks, faults, and such come out with more time.

Yes, but it takes significantly more than a "little bit of time" for most other players. So far as I can tell the only people who have shown any interest in this rp are those with prior D&D experience, and while I'm glad to know that there ARE those like yourself willing to jump through the extra hoops for the chance I don't want to cater only to the D&D crowd. We have the advantage of prior D&D exposure, we understand the differences in abilities between the classes and how best to bring out their strengths, but we're the only ones.

Like I said, I'm not going to remove the whole D&D aspect of the RP, but rather allow those who are not interested in it to create their own specific characters and classes. I am the king of making up rules on the fly, and if necessary I will do this for those non-mechanic characters as the situation arises.

okay...so my suggestion for those not inclined to spend the time to make custom chars...make a pregenerated sheet for classes...basically roll up a sheet of standardized stats and skills...hell I'd do that for ya since I have the stuff down now...if you wanna go that way I'll save you some time and start on that now.

I thought about doing exactly that. Jester also suggested a similar idea at the beginning. I suppose since I already have role suggestions up there I can create some character suggestions too. And if I'm going to do that, having more character options open to the players would be preferable...

Alright, how about this, if you're really interested pm me with your email and* I'll send you a copy of the PDF character sheet I have, which makes creating characters much easier. In addition, adobe offers a free trial of their acrobat 9.0 program, which means that for the duration of the trial you'll be able to actually save any changes you make to PDFs, so download and install that if you can. What we'll do is start making basic level 1 characters with specific progression paths that players will be able to alter if they are so inclined.

*I got your email off your profile and went ahead and sent you a message with the character sheet attached.

alright, it's all yours. Try to keep the .hack series in mind when making the characters and email the sheets to me once you're finished. Something to remember, if you don't have a full (paid or trial) version of adobe acrobat, you'll be able to edit the character sheet, but not save any of the work you've done. Hence the 9.0 trial suggestion.

I'll also send you two a copy of one of the sheets I've already finished so you can sort of see the format I want them in.

Oh, I didn't put it on that sheet, but on the top left of page 1 there is a section for Favored Class. Put whatever class you're making that character and then choose whether to give them an extra HP or an extra skill point.

like this: Barbarian/HP

that way when I auditing the character I know. Also, note the racial ability modifiers next to their Base score, under the Inherent field. That's important as it'll save me a lot of headaches

okay, I just realized something... with three of us all working on random generated characters we're bound to start overlapping. So lets list what we're working on and what ideas we have for future characters.

Right now I'm working on a dual wielding kitani bard who focuses on skills. Next I plan on making a summoner druid and then maybe a sorcerer or wizard who focuses on defensive spells and ablities.

I'm basically going for a Beast Mastery Druid. Having a strong animal companion being backed up by fodder summons.

Oh and just so I'm clear on this, we can spend points on an Ability Score up until 18 and let the Racial scores bump it up to 20 or do we have to stop at 16 and let the Racials bump it up to 18?

Yeah, I saw that one coming a mile away. Bet you had to redo the entire thing over again because you did up the character sheet before you started acrobat 9.0, didn't you? I know because I did the exact same thing when I first started running play-by-post games.

I figured Death out.

If a character is reduced to 0 HP they are unconscious. If a character is solo, or if the entire party died, the character loses experience equal to that which she would have gained if she had cleared the encounter. If a character is unconscious at the end of combat, but at least one of her allies are above 0 HP that character may attempt a Heal check (DC 10+total experience lost) to bring the target to 1hp and cut the experience loss in half. Players who have been revived this way must return to the Root Town before they are able to further recover lost HP.

Reviving a character nullifies the loss of experience and allows normal healing to resume without the necessity of return to the Root Town.
