It’s day three of San Con, San Diego‘s own gaming convention. Open Gaming officially starts in about an hour, sign-ups are done, and those taking part have time to run loose until they need to start finding your way towards the gaming rooms. The convention center is crowded, and the gamer funk is definitely wafting through the air as the AC units struggle to match the body heat of hundreds of nerds, but at least it’s not as bad as Competitive Gaming yesterday. Fifity groups slugging through the tomb of the Ooze Lord makes for a lot of noise and confusion, and at least a few elbows in other people‘s ribs.

The food court is starting to empty out as people wander off to get early starts on their games, and some of the tables hosting the authors, artists, and other minor celebrities are starting to get packed up. At the end of the row of gaming rooms along the south wall, hidden by the vending machines, is Room 6. A few benches are lined along the wall, and the door is closed. A piece of notebook paper is taped to it. Written in sharpie in large letters is “5 minutes.” Five minutes until or from when is not clear. The lights are on, but the door remains locked and the room, silent.

Mei-Hua Ming was a shocker to most people. Short, sleek black hair, typically slanted eyes, petite stature, white complexion; she looked exactly as her parents wanted her too: The perfect student. She even had a jacket on that boldly declared the letters M, I, and T in school colors. One earbud was stuffed in her ear while the other dangled in front of Mei’s hoodie. The wire trailed into the pocket of Mei’s jeans as the girl stuck her hands in her hoodie. She had a broad smile that curled her lips.

And she was being very loud.

Many of the gamers had cleared a circle of space around her as she enthusiastically chatted with a few people her age, eyes alight and sparkling as she turned a peppermint over and over again in her mouth. There seemed to be no pause in her chatter, a never ending stream of a one sided conversation. She got quite a few strange looks. The topic of her discussion was not calculus, ancient literature, or even music. No, Mei would never want to revisit those things even though she loved them all. Instead, what she spoke of today was a full tilt rant upon why San Con was only three days. The little Chinese girl clearly got some strange looks, which she ignored gleefully.

Finally, Mei broke off and waved a goodbye to her frazzled looking audience, unwrapping a jolly rancher and popping that in her mouth as she danced [Literally, danced] away from the food court. She liked talking to people, she really did, but she also adored DnD. She didn’t want to be late for the session. Only one problem.

Mei was lost. It was just a matter of how long it took for her to realize this.

San Con, The smell of paper, the musk of hot adolescent and grown men, and overly enthusiastic gamers gathering together for purposes varying as much from person to person as their looks. Though many of those were quite similar for some. This was his third year attending the Con. He had only been in California for three years, sense he had moved from the south east. He had moved here for school, but he did love the thrill of the Con, the hustle and bustle, and the gathering of so many gamers in one place. It was something that he wished his father would have come and saw for himself this year as well. But the old man was busy with his own projects and his record of having never skipped a game night for the campaign he ran for his friends was not something to be broken. James was just glad that he was allowed to have his character retire form the adventure rather than be killed off should he return home after he graduated, he could return to the campaign if it was still running. After all, working ones way though 17 levels was not something to be thrown away so casually.

James was actually packing up his tote bag for the day. He had shared a stall in the shop section of the con with a friend of his. He had put his fondness for sowing to work, and had made various stuffed figures of different kinds of D&D characters and monsters. He had sold quite a lot, and had commission for custom figures which he had the information written down for when he had the time.

Picking up the tote and held it at his side, it wasn't that big sense the crate he had taken the already made ones in was being taken care of by his friend. He was clad in a button up dress shirt which had the first two or three buttons undone and the shirt sleeves rolled up. He had on is waist a kilt, accompanied by a sporran. He was rather fond of the article of clothing, given to him by a gamer friend from Scotland. ((Taken from me directly. >.> )) He made his way casually though the food court, his boots licking at the ground as he went, though the sound was lost in the low mummer of those who still remained there. It was settling down, and though the thinning crowds of the socially awkward and the overly zealous he made his way. His tote bag in his left hand, and his messenger style book bag on his back, the seasoned gamer made his way over towards the vending machines. Earlier in the day he had checked where the room had been. Much for the same reason as why he was now heading right there rather than mulling around a bit as he'd like to. James was a punctual person, and he was well used to severe scoldings for being late to games, or worse, EXP loss.

Making his way over to the vending machine, he reached out and felt the metallic handle for the door with his hand. It moved only slightly when he went to open it, it was locked. The sign on the door said five minutes, as such he shrugged, glanced back, and walked over to the bench and took a seat on it, setting his tote bag down on the ground next to him as he took a deep breath and let it out as he relaxed slightly and waited.

Takeshi was walking around the first floor of the convention. He had his laptop open and was typing away. His fingers seemed to be a blue as he his keystroke was one hundred ninety word a minute. He was typing up his latest submission to the D&D makers. He would randomly submit character, scene, race, and monster ideas. He was something of a master when it came to D&D never missing a single tournament he had been invited to. Today was just another long list of conventions he had been to.
As he was typing on his computer he would bump into people either knocking them down or causing them to stumble. This never fased him as he had learned to keep him balance while on his computer. The memo he had gotten a few hours earlier had told him he would be participating in a tournament in room six.
As he looked up from his computer and closed it he got a serious look on his face. He casually shifted his glasses further up his nose as a few girls stepped in front of him. It seemed they were part of the Haruno fan club. He had gathered many fans being one of the top ranked D&D players in the country. They asked him for his autograph and he took a pen from his pocket protecter. He sighed thier notebooks in his elegant script and began to search for room six.
It took him a minute to find it. It seemed they wanted no unwanted guests the room being hidden behind a soda machine. He looked at the door and tried to open it, but his attempt failed. He sat down by the door and opened his laptop and began to type away while waiting for the DM to come and unlock the door.

Mei took her time. A silver watch was loosely but firmly clasped around her left wrist, but she didn’t bother to glance at it. Instead, she stopped here and there, examining anything that caught her eye. The halls were quite empty now, in comparison to earlier that morning, and Mei was beginning to realize that she probably needed to get moving. So she strode off, humming a pleasant tune under her voice. It wasn’t until she came back to the food court that she realized she was lost. What game room was it again? Thankfully, Mei’s memory was quite good, and the number popped into her head. She consulted one of the small maps pinned on the wall, eyes scouring the surface, wondering why there were so many rooms and why room six seemed so hard to find,

But Mei found room six and set off for it, calming down as she began to ready herself for a new game. It would be a while until she would be able to play DnD, and Mei intended to make the best off it. Soon, much to her relief, she found herself in front of room six, the bench already occupied by two waiting gamers. One of them was younger, and Mei had an inkling of who he might be. The other was slightly older, and looked serious. Mei’s lips curled into a pleased smile. She liked an age range. It made games much more fun.

Without warning, Mei offered up a hand and introduced herself, “Hi, I’m Mei. What’s your name?”

Naturally, she completely ignored the door.

James was sat at the bench and he watched as a young boy on a laptop walking up typing on a laptop. The boy was young, probably not yet 14. James couldn't help but be puzzled over the concept of how young people were getting things now a days. He was twenty before he got his laptop, and he only got it then for school. he still prefers the tower he has. Yet this kid, probably only starting puberty's already walking around with one. The child didn't seem to pay any mind to him as he walked and sat down. It would seem that he'd have the boy in the game. He wasn't sure he was thrilled about the idea either. He had nothing against young players. Personally the game had to bring new players in or else they would die out with the older generations, but younger players these days often did not have the experience and the knowledge to back, which makes a game like the ones at the cons rather difficult for someone to carry them through. Granted he didn't think all of them couldn't play the game, he himself had started well before this boys age, but he started and worked his way all the way though the entire series of games that became the various editions of D&D, and he wasn't really wanting to have to drag a premature player along when they lacked to know how to move along themselves. But James wasn't about to get negative. As he waited he reached into his back pack and had pulled out the first monster manual and started casually scanning through it. It was always good to brush up just in case it wasn't fresh in his mind. He had been looking over the material for years, but it was always good to freshen up on it before a session.

It wasn't too much longer before another person appeared. This one being a girl, and also of oriental decent. He glanced up to see here when she heard footsteps and she stopped. She was older than this boy most likely, at least James thought so. It was always kind of hard to judge the age of younger Asians....at least for him. But she still seemed to be somewhere under 19 or so. So far he was the oldest one to the line up, and he wasn't really that he was that old. The girl thrust an enthusiastic hand out and and introduced herself. James just chuckled and sticking his index finger into his book he closed it and held it with his left hand as he reached out and too the girls hand with his right giving it one firm shake. "James." He said with a nod and a light smile, then released the hand and drew his back.

Roy was an odd figure to see at a convention. Standing at 6'5'' he had all eyes on him. He was an ex marine and did not like big crowds to much. Crowds were dangerous and un predictable. As he leaned up against the wall he noted a small boy making his way through the crowd angry calls following after him as he bumped into people.
Roy was here for only one reason. The D&D game. It helped him keep his mind off of Iraq. The game was a great way to unwind though it could cause quite a deal of stress at times. He yawned as he looked at his watch. What time had they said the game would start? Had they even given a time? Well he didnt want to be late. He had scouted the entire building on day one of the convention. So he knew exactly where to go.
As he made his way past the soda machine he noticed a young girl entering in front of him.
So are yall who I will be gaming with today? His voice was loud and very deep. It had always been that way and people always assumed he was yelling. Though that wasnt the case.

A warm smile flitted across Mei’s lips as the older man introduced himself. James. A nice name, Mei thought. She then withdrew her hand and tilted her head quizzically at the younger boy. He seemed quite engrossed in his computer. Why anyone would spend so much time staring at a glowing screen Mei wasn’t sure. She, of course, liked her own laptop, but it tended to remind her of school, which was something Mei didn’t like to think of in her free time. Shrugging the thought off, Mei was about to ask him what he was doing when a deep, loud voice broke her thoughts. The girl literally jumped and stifled a squeak as she whirled around, hands flying to her mouth. It took her a moment to understand what the man had said, and another for her to take in his enormous form.

Mei blinked once, then her shock was wiped away with a flood of enthusiasm. Oh the variety! Offering up her hand again, Mei grinned, “I suppose so! I’m Mei.”

He had heard the three introducing himself but he did not want to break away from his computer. He sighed as he hit the last key and closed the computer. He took off his glasses and cleaned them then replace them. He placed the computer back in its bag and stood up. I am Takashi Haruno. It is a pleasure to meet you all. He looked at the diversity of the group. It seemed he was the youngest. That was the case in just about everything he did though. He sighed as he looked at the tall man. It seemed this would be fun indeed. The man seemed to be in his fourties, the girl in front of him seemed to be a teen. As he turned he noticed a boy sitting on the bench. Had he been there this whole time? Takashi has been so engrossed in his laptop he had not noticed him.

Someone unlocked the door from the inside. As it opened, the assembled gamers got their first look at their DM. He looked like a pretty ordinary guy. Balding, wire frame glasses, thin but not unusually so, maybe five-seven. He was some undeterminable age. He could have been 25 and a worrier, or a good 45. Blue jeans and a plaid shirt seemed like they’d be uncomfortable in a building where the air conditioner is struggling, but he didn’t look like it was bothering him. The sticker on his shirt declared that My Name Is God. He glanced from one person to the next, looking at the four people waiting outside the door. “You my group?”

James had noted the latest newcomer as a rather large man. It seemed that he at least wasn't to be the oldest in the group. But either way his attention was to be drawn away from the group of gamers when he heard the clicking sound from the door and the pathway opened to reveal the man that would be posing as their DM for the Game. He glanced at the name tag and smiled. It was a common enough thing for DM's to do, though he hadn't seen it in a few years. Brought back some good an humorous memories of shenanigans that had taken place. He just chuckled. "well, that or we're actually a new vending machine cult, known as the league of Funions." He said with small grin. He then slipped his book back into his back pack and stood. It wasn't a very good joke, but for some reason he was getting a serious vibe off of the group there at the moment, and even small jokes often times helped ease things.

Mei glanced back at the young oriental boy who looked up from his lap top and introduced himself. A Japanese name, no doubt. Mei decided her Chinese jokes would most definitely not work. Oh well, another day. Mei was about to turn her attention back to the large man and tell him he spoke loudly when the door clicked open and Mei almost gave herself whiplash when she turned to see who was there. It was only than that Mei even noticed the sign hanging on the door. But her eyes were drawn from the door to the man who was clearly their DM. His name tag made Mei laugh. Really laugh. It had not been the first time she had seen the joke, of course, but it cracked her up every time. And when the man who introduced himself as James made a joke about the “League of Funions” Mei doubled over with glee, almost to the point where tears were streaming from her eyes. No doubt if this was the time to make an impression, Mei was not doing a very good job.

When Mei finally recovered, her face was a slight pink from all of her laughter. She pulled her the earbud out of her ear and rolled it up around her hand before stuffing the coils into her pocket. Still smiling widely, Mei rummaged around in her other pocket and withdrew an unidentifiable candy, tearing the wrapper open and popping the candy into her mouth. Glancing from left to right, as if crossing a road, Mei nodded and stuck her hands in her hoodie, rolling the candy in her mouth happily. She had a good feeling that this session would be a good one. A good way to end the convention.

Haha, The booming laugh came from him as he placed his hand on the young mans shoulder. It appears we have a jokester among us. Roy always liked a good laugh before he became serious for a session. He looked at the small boy. His name seemed familiar he had heared it before. Oh well that did not matter. Yes we are your group for today. Shall we get started? He walked around the young lady and into the room. He called back after them My name is Roy it is nice to meet you all.

He looked towards the three with disdain. Now was no time to joke. It was rare for Takashi to have a smile on his face. He was always the serious type always taking what he was doing head on. That is how he got the where he was so fast. He looked towards the DM. It is a pleasure to meet you. I do believe we are your group for today. He thrust his hand towards the man as he grabbed his laptop bag with the other. Shall we get started then? I see no reason to delay unless we are still short one person.

Mr. God smiled a weird, lopsided smile that was almost a smirk. "Okey dokey. Let's get going. I'm Ed Gossman, but I guess you probably remember that from the sign-in sheet."

Room 6 looked like Ed did some last-minute decorating to help set the scene. Big dribbly candles were set in a large ring around the folding table at the center of the room, though none of them were actually lit, and a translucent, ruby-red d20 the size of a fist is dominating the center of the table itself. A black felt cloth had been thrown over the table, and five chairs were set up around it, one slightly away from the rest. A stack of blue folders and some pencils sat on the table in front of the lone chair, where Ed settled in, looking comfortable in the folding chair.

Ed looked around the group. "Well, time for introductions, I guess," he said. "Given that we only have one Chinese girl present, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that you're Ms. Mei-Hua Ming," nodding towards Mei and getting the pronunciation perfectly. Looking to Takashi, he continued, "And by a similar line of thought, that'd make you Takashi Haruno." His line of sight moved on to James, "You just kind of look like a Jim, so I'll guess that you're James Forrest, which leaves you," continuing towards Roy, "as Roy Hardin."

He smiled again. "So, how'd I do?"

James carried his things onwards into the room and smiled as he entered it. It was simple enough, and seemed to be a bit of personal decoration which Jame himself always found amusing. The big d20 was a nice add to the lot. He made his way over towards the chairs that where not off to the side and picking one on the left he dropped off his tote beside it. He chuckled as the 'introductions' began. When it was all said and down he just smiled and shook his head. "pinned me right, but I always thought I looked more like a Robert." He said with a grin as he settled himself down in the chair he had chosen after unslinging his backpack and resting it at his foot. He blinked and stood up. "Hold on one moment, sorry I forgot." He said, walking back out the door and slipping over to the vending machine. He reached down into his sporran and pulled out his wallet. He fed some money into the machine and after a moment's time he returned to the room with three mountain dew bottles. Ah, it was cliche, but true enough in James' case. He did enjoy a bit of due. So he walked over, setting them down by his chair and seated himself once again. He wasn't going to drink them just yet, but it was always good to get them now rather than break game flow later.

Mei followed James into the room, flashing a brief grin at “Mr. God” when he correctly identified her name. Clearly he had a sharp train of thought; this game was sure to be very interesting indeed. Mei watched as James stepped out of the door to buy some Mountain Dew. Mei consumed so much caffeine during the school year that she tended to stay away from it during other times. But sugar was a different matter. Mei always kept a steady stash with her, and needed nothing else, it seemed.

Mei picked a seat and random and plopped down in the chair, immediately abandoning her shoes and pulling her legs up to sit Indian-style, her knees sticking from underneath the armrests, sheathed in a pair of simple jeans. Although, “sat” was probably too light of a term. Mei fidgeted, twitched, bounced up and down. Any movement that wasn’t really “movement,” Mei did it.

Takashi quickly took one of the two remaining seats. Yes you are correct there. He pulled his glasses off and put them away. He reached into his bag and grabbed out a small case for contacts. He carefully put each of the small lenses in his eyes. He then grabbed a bottle of drops and put some in each eye. He then grabbed a big bottle of Dr Pepper out of his bag. That was his only weakness. He loved to drink Dr Pepper and no on could stop him from drinking it.

Ed started handing out character sheets. They had been printed out on large paper and folded so they make a kind of booklet and then taped shut. “Don’t look at your characters yet. They’ve all got biographies in there. I’ll let you read them in a minute. First, can you sign this?” Ed delved into his stack of books, and drew out a large leather book. A bookmark was placed about halfway through it. Opening it to the bookmark to reveal a blank page, he held it out to the group in general. “I like getting autographs from my group every year. Makes better souvenirs than anything the vendor stands are selling.”

It was a good thing that Ed didn’t pause too much in between his sentences. As soon as Mei received her character folder, she was in the process of opening. But when she heard Ed tell them not to open in the folder, Mei gave a minor pout before the bubbly expression returned. She grinned; Ed’s reasoning made a lot of sense, although Mei didn’t think that she would have ever thought of having a guest book. While at the convention, anyways. She tended to be slightly less clear minded when she allowed herself to be wild.

Mei rummaged through her messenger bag and withdrew a small pen with a little charm dangling from the end. Pulling the book towards her, she signed it with her typical cursive: wide, loopy, and yet elegant letters that formed her full name in English. Then, just for kicks, Mei added her name in Chinese characters underneath before sliding the book back with another brilliant smile.

James was handed the character and he just placed it on the table before him. He strummed his finger along it for a moment and looked up at the book. He tilted his head. It made sense. He had not seen it done very often, but he had seen it done, and it made sense. He watched the girl before him sign her name and when the book was passed to him picked his pencil from his back pack (no gamer uses pens during a game) and jotted down J.B.Forrest. He flipped though the pages to the front page, rather curious as to how such a book would be started, as well as if any signatures happen to stand out. Not that he would have likely recognized them, but he was slightly curious as to if there was any creative hand writings.
