Technically the Phantom isn't from the Cold War Era either, but I'm trying not to let that bug me too much. ...! Perhaps the Doctor fetched him from his proper time period for this? That would work. That would work very well, actually... |

If it's to fetch someone as fascinating as the Phantom, I think he'd suck it up and do it. So it's official! I'm playing the Phantom in this. I'll begin working on the profile shortly. It's probably going to be a long one. |

Cultural significance... I have no idea. xD I was gonna do a character from Steph King's fantasy series, since he is the most epic fantasy character I've ever read, but I guess I'll have to reconsider it. |

Username: BadWolf Character name: Erik Aliases/nicknames: Opera Ghost, Phantom of the Opera Gender: Male Age: 49 Height: approx 6'10" Weight: approx 160 lbs Sexuality: Bisexual Personality: Oh dear... What can be said about Erik's personality? For starters, it's unstable. Though he's mellowed out a bit by this point, to some extent, he's still rather dangerous. It isn't uncommon for him to enter a blind rage at the slightest provocation, particularly if it was a comment about his appearance. He absolutely hates it when people stare at him, and he hates it more when people talk about him. Insecure, much? Oh yes. On a positive note, he's brilliant. An inventor, an artist, an architect, a musician, a composer, a magician, a thief, a ventriloquist, an alchemist, a physician, a murderer... There are many skills that he has mastered throughout the course of his life, all fueled by his incessant need to create--or destroy. He doesn't acknowledge anything as being impossible, nor does he allow himself to be defeated by seemingly impossible tasks. If this means isolating himself for days on end without food or rest while he tries to make the impossible possible. And he often succeeds. A genius to the core. He's also a natural-born leader. Taking orders is not one of his strong points because his pride is unshakable, but when in a leadership position, he is reasonable and fair to those below him. He never hesitates to compliment someone one their good work, nor does he hesitate to help someone when they need it. He always aims for perfection, and he acknowledges that in order to achieve perfection, everyone needs to be working at their best. He also has a very dry and unexpected sense of humor. It's usually manifested in sarcasm when around someone he doesn't like, but if you're counted among his friendly acquaintances, he'll surprise you by saying some of the most ridiculous things in order to make you laugh. He's always had the mentality of a showman and entertainer, and he knows how to lighten a situation when it needs to be lightened. So if you get past his appearance and his occasional moody and dark spells, you find a very intriguing and entertaining person who is very much deserving of respect and friendship. If you want to be on his good list, treat him kindly and be as his friend. If you treat him poorly, you're likely to end up in a grave by his hands. Bio: Erik was born in the summer of 1831 in Bocherville, France. He was raised by a widowed mother (named Madeleine)--his father (Charles) had died in a masonry accident a few months before his birth--who hated and feared him because of his face. The first thing she ever put on him after his birth was a mask, which she never allowed him to take off. The only one to show him kindness in that household was the dog Sasha, who he formed a very tight bond with during the first nine years of his life. During those years, his talents for ventriloquism, art, architecture, music, and composition developed and scared his mother nearly out of her mind. There seemed to be nothing that Erik couldn't do, and his progress was truly alarming to her. And also during those years, she only once celebrated his birthday (his fifth). Her friend had convinced her to do so, and on the day, Erik had asked her if she was going to give him a present. And what did he ask for? Kisses. Two kisses. That was all. Well, Madeleine refused. She refused and greatly upset Erik, who rebelled by coming downstairs for dinner without his mask on. Madeleine dragged him in front of the only mirror in the house to show him exactly why he had to wear the mask when no one else did. He was terrified by what he saw, and he smashed the mirror to bits, the pieces scarring his hands and wrists. He probably would have bled to death, but her mother's friend had tended to him and saved his life. His mother certainly didn't. He thought for a while that the image in the mirror was a monster that had been sent to punish him for being bad, but only months later did he realize the truth of what he saw. He was terrified of mirrors now, though. He handled them with the greatest of care, keeping them from showing him his reflection as he began to toy with them for the purpose of creating illusions, which fascinated him greatly. Magic in general fascinated him greatly, and that particular obsession stuck with him. When he was nine, a group of neighborhood boys came by his house to do their usual routine of shouting awful things and throwing rocks through the windows of the house to try to provoke Erik to come out. His mother had always kept him inside for the fear that someone would hurt him, but this time he didn't stay in. The reason was that Sasha was outside, and the boys had started to throw rocks at her. That enraged Erik, and he went out without hesitation despite his mother's protests that the boys would kill him. The resulting struggle ended with the boys running away in terror and Erik carrying in the dead body of his dog, whose neck had been broken. He had blood all over his shirt, but that wasn't from Sasha. He'd been stabbed. The doctor that his mother had been dating came, tended to him, and saved his life, but the conversation that he overheard between his mother and the doctor while he rested convinced him that he needed to leave this place. If he left, then his mother would be free of him. She'd go off and marry the doctor and be happy. So when he woke up the next morning, he left. When trying to steal food from a camp of gypsies, he was caught and caged to be used as a freak show exhibit for their traveling fair. His master, a man called Javert, was a real nasty piece of work. Though once Erik revealed his remarkable talents, Javert allowed him to make his own decisions over how to use the time he was being exhibited. Instead of being a freak, he was instead shown as a magician. A magician that brought quite a bit of fame and fortune to this group of gypsies. And Javert. Though Erik had to remove his mask at the end of each show--just long enough to shock--it was a small price to pay for the freedom it afforded him within the camp. He studied under the camp's herbalist while there, learning the properties of various plants. When the camp was struck by a deadly illness, those treated with the usual remedy died. The ones treated with the concoction that Erik made lived. Due to this event and his increasing fame from his illusions and magic, he got quite a bit of power within the camp. So many superstitions began swirling around him, and he was quite happy with himself. The gypsies feared and respected him, but Javert always let him know that Erik belonged to him. On the night when Erik was going to leave the camp for fear that they'd kill him--one of the gypsy girls was going to accuse him of attacking her (which wasn't true)--Javert had the awful timing of coming in as Erik was packing to flee. He attempted to rape Erik, but that ended with Javert lying dead on the floor of the tent from knife wounds. Erik escaped successfully, and his path toward mastering the art of murder had begun. From there he traveled with various different fairs in order to earn a living. His travels took him to Rome, where he happened to meet with a master mason named Giovanni. Giovanni saw Erik's interested in architecture and masonry, and he taught Erik as he would an apprentice. By the age of fifteen, Erik could have easily taken over the business from Giovanni. The middle-aged man was leaving Erik to run the building sites on his own, and Erik was doing a remarkable job and flourishing. He was slowly dropping the barriers that he had erected around himself, speaking more easily and acting like a normal person. That ended when the truth of why he wore a mask shot around the building site. He reverted right back to acting like a hunted animal, and the downward spiral had begun, particularly when Giovanni's young daughter Luciana came home from boarding school. She had fallen completely in love with Erik because of the mystery of his mask, and when things came to a head and Luciana demanded that Erik take the mask off, her fear upon seeing his face caused her to flee. The stonework on the roof of the house where Erik had been working on a rooftop garden for her crumbled, and she fell to her death. Erik left, blaming himself for her death and thinking that his time with Giovanni had to be at an end. He traveled again with the fairs for a time, and when he was in a rather large fair in Russia, he was approached by a Persian named Nadir Khan. Nadir extended an invitation from the Shah of Persia for Erik to come and perform for the royal court, and Erik agreed for two reasons: he could get quite a bit of power if he pleased the Shah, and he found Nadir to be honest and amusing. His time in Persia was a period of great change for Erik. He was nineteen when he arrived there. The Grand Vizier managed to make enemies with Erik right away, and Erik began using court intrigue to inconvenience the Vizier in every way possible. Erik's brilliance and expertise in so many fields had made him quite the valuable asset to the Shah and the Shah's mother, the Khanum. He was asked to build a new palace for the court as a result, though the Khanum preferred to keep Erik around the court as a source of her amusement, having him fight in single-combat against various accused traitors. He became her Angel of Doom, felling many people by use of a specialized cat-gut cord known as a Punjab Lasso. During this time he was also given the dangerous drug hashish, and while on that drug he was the cause of many "amusing deaths" for the Khanum. He also designed a mirrored room as a torture chamber for her amusement. Though Erik soon abandoned the hashish in favor of opium, which Nadir provided for him. The calm it gave him was welcome after all of the horrible things Erik had done. His friendship with Nadir continued to grow, since Nadir was almost always around him. The Shah had essentially asked Nadir to spy on Erik, but Erik took that knowledge into stride, joking about how he would have to make sure Nadir's reports were sufficiently interesting. Nadir's unwell son, Reza, grew very close to Erik, as well. The boy was practically blind and suffering from muscle weakness, and Erik knew that Reza was dying. So he did everything he could to make the child happy in the meantime, making him intricate toys and telling him the most amazing stories. When Reza's health began to fail him to the point where he could no longer eat without choking, Erik poisoned Reza to give him a peaceful death rather than the long and painful one that nature would give him. This was done with Nadir's permission, though it was still a cause of some strain between the two. When the Vizier fell from power and was assassinated--not by Erik's hand, though Erik was supposed to have taken part in it--Erik performed an illusion colored with harsh political overtones when the Vizier's widow was married to the new Vizier two days later. This insult to the court resulted in Erik being poisoned, and he barely survived it. Things went downhill from there, and Nadir was told to arrest Erik so he could be executed. Instead, Nadir helped Erik escape from Persia, but on the condition that Erik would hold himself accountable to Nadir. Nadir was to forevermore be Erik's conscience. Erik was twenty-one when he left Persia. Erik returned to France after that, working as an architect for a time. He had switched to using morphine instead of opium out of the fear that continuing to use the opium would damage his voice. When the opportunity to be the architect of the new Paris opera house passed him by, he instead worked with the architect--Charles Garnier--to see to the building's construction. When it was complete, Erik took up residence in the deepest basement of the opera house, on the edge of the underground lake they had to create in order to make the site compatible for building. And there he has stayed, playing the part of the Opera Ghost ever since. He receives a lovely sum of money from the management each month for his "services," and he is quite content with himself, though Nadir has recently managed to worm his way back into Erik's life. Other: There are a few things that should be mentioned about Erik and what he can do. I'll list them here. - Erik is addicted to morphine. - Erik's voice is very strange. It's inhumanly beautiful, but it has an underlying note of power to it that allows him to, at times, control people by putting them in a kind of trance. - Erik's very accomplished at feats requiring sleight-of-hand, making him a very able pickpocket, among other things. - Despite his skeletal build, he's deceptively strong. Appearance: Erik is quite tall and is built like a skeleton. He wears only the best of clothes, tailored exactly to his specifications and made of only the finest materials. He wears a white mask which covers the entirety of his face, and he certainly won't take it off without a fight. His hair is a reddish-brown color and is short and straight. His eyes are heterochromatic, with the right being green and the left being blue. Both shine gold when in the dark. He is utterly incapable of moving in an ungraceful manner, and he makes next to no sound when he moves. Very much like a cat, that one is. Beneath the mask, his face is a horrible sight. If you took the head off a month-old corpse and plopped it on a living person, you'd get his face. His skin is pale and thin, with the blood vessels plainly visible. His lips are deformed, and he completely lacks a nose. Just a hole where a nose should be. His face is very much like a skull. Not a pretty sight in the least. He also has bruising on his right forearm from his morphine use, and his fingers--which are abnormally long and thin--are scarred, along with his hands and wrists from the mirror incident. *pant pant* That took forever... And I even left so much out... |
