Breckin groaned and attempted to stand, the muscles of his forelegs quivering before they gave out. He coughed, foamy pink saliva gathering on his bared teeth. Shaking his head irritably, he tried in vain to remember what was wrong with him. With a shock of pain and understanding, he wrenched himself to his feet, the gasp that he forced through his throat rasping in a cheap imitation of his full voice. "Whoa, big fella." With a choking snarl, Breckin wheeled around, the ruff at his neck standing on end. He tottered menacingly toward the big man who had spoken, but he found himself head over rump in the dirt once more. Perched out of reach in the bed of his truck, the human considered the black phase mottled wolf in front of him. The large beast covered in battle scars was lucky to be alive. Beside him, the stiff, dead forms of the brute's former pack were a testament to his fortune. Whining, Breckin made a disoriented effort to rear up and investigate the corpses of his loved ones, but the man pushed him away with a stout walking stick. Satisfied that the timber wolf was recovering enough to fend for himself, he slipped through the back window of his vehicle, started it, and drove away over the gently sloping terrain. Snuffling pitifully, Breckin settled on his haunches, now noticing the other small hurts that covered his body. Aside from the many scars that marred his thick coat, he was an impressive specimen; he was large, well-muscled, and long-legged. Bright, umber-speckled yellow eyes peered mournfully at the retreating truck as he remembered what had happened. --- "What a find!" Breckin yowled joyously, his tail swishing back and forth as he surveyed the large cattle herd below the ridge he and his family perched on. Smiling in spite of himself, Breckin's sire nodded in mute agreement. The retreating sun sent waves of orange and ochre across the distant mountainous horizon. Lowing tiredly, the unsuspecting bovines shifted back and forth on their hooves, settling down for the cool autumn night. When the small pack trotted down the verge for the kill, they had no way of knowing that this would be their last hunt together. In all, they were six wolves strong. By the time the angry rancher was through with them, all were riddled with shotgun pellets, their throats cut. When the park ranger found them, drawn by the sound of gunfire, Breckin was the only one left with any semblance of life. The last thing he remembered was the sharp prick of a sedative and the quick tugging as his throat was sewn closed. --- The mountains that had been so distant before now reared in the forefront of Breckin's vision. The scents floating on the wind had no familiar qualities. Thankfully, he didn't detect the marks of a prevailing pack, but upon further inahalation, he could tell he wasn't the only wolf in the area. Limping to the edge of the nearby lake, he drank deeply, noting the pain in his throat with every swallow. As a test, he tipped his head back and howled, only to let loose a faint yodel that would have shamed a pup. He was alone, handicapped, and knew nothing about his surrounding area. A deep growl rumbled in his chest as he cursed the pale ape that had killed his family, as well as the one who brought him here. The next one that crossed his path would not escape alive. |

Kuu awoke slowly. She was under a canopy of tall trees and the light was glittering through a green film of leaves. She first did a mental self inspection. She seemed up be ok. No real pain. She felt a bit woozy but by the smell of things it she must have been out a long time. She was nowhere near her home. She was cautious getting up and steadied herself. After making sure she was sure she began to survey the area. High mountains close. A thick lively forest, but their seemed to be no other wolf packs in this domain. However, upon closer inspection Kuu could smell other wolves. They weren't far so she decided to take a look. She took off in the direction of the smell full speed. She soon came to the edge of a clearing and slowed down carefully conceling herself behind some brush. She watched the male stagger to the lake's edge and drink. Then he attemped at what she believed might have been thought a howl. She chuckled, which came off more as a growl. He looked weak, maybe he was hurt. Either way he seemed no threat to her. Better for now though to watch and see what she could learn. Kuu watched carfully being sure she was down wind from the male and hidden out of sight. |

For My Love Because ten billion years' time is so fragile, so ephemeral... it arouses such a bittersweet, almost heartbreaking fondness. | |

I remember when they took me away from my wandering. I put up a fight just for pure amusement. I really didn't have a home. Not a place to settle. But I didn't mind this fact, for I had been living like this for as long as I could remember, and being taken away from where I was was no biggy in my mind. The weird no-furs, maybe about five were surrounding me, like I was some kind of prey. It was pitiful, to have five no-furs against one, hungry lone wolf. But it was fun to pounce on one, and see the fear in his eyes, the yells of the other no-furs, trying to tear me off. They used so many pricky things, for I was immune to things in my blood, and it took a while before I drifted off. But it was so funny, and so amusing to me, as I tasted the no-fur's blood in my mouth. Of course, it tasted horrible. Waking up next to a flowing rover was convenient, and I was lucky in my view. Many berries and prey would come to the river for water, and it would be a source for me too. But instead of marveling at how lucky I was, I could smell the stench of wolves near me. I had not see, or talked to another one of my kind for so long it almost surprised me at the stench, and the weak howl only made me laugh. If this is how wolves were dealing with this kind of treatment these days, they have become pathetic. I walked through the trees, thoroughly amused, but keeping the path burned into my mind as not to forget the great place. I encountered a lake, so close to my river, but I didn't enjoy lakes as much. They were too big, and much too... still for my liking. I could smell a wolf hiding, watching, to see this huge brute I could now smell and see in front of me. The poor thing looked like it was about to die, it's neck very torn, it's body full of scars as mine. I smiled in amusement once again. I wanted to walk over, but I decided not to as I walked past the two wolves, my white hair shining, my ocean blue eyes sparkling like the ocean itself. How boring.
