Happy Christmas, now call off the war on Christians Right on cue, a gang of peace-loving Islamist headcases has launched a nationwide poster campaign declaring that Christmas is evil. We may associate the festive season with goodwill to all men, mince pies and a nice pair of socks from the mother-in-law, but according to supporters of Islam4UK, Christmas is responsible for a multitude of sins, including rape, paedophilia and domestic violence. The posters feature the Star of Bethlehem and the catchy slogan: ‘On the First Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me . . . an STD.’ OK, so it doesn’t scan, but you get the gist. There’s also an accompanying website, spewing out hatred against Christianity. But don’t expect any prosecutions, even though Islam4UK is technically a banned organisation. The moment you make any of these extremist cadres illegal, they simply regroup under another name. Those responsible will continue to strut their stuff on the streets of East London, Luton and Wootton Bassett, with the craven indulgence of the forces of law and order. Imagine what would happen if a team of fundamentalist Christians started slapping up posters during Ramadan insulting the Prophet Mohammed and suggesting that Eid encouraged terrorism. They’d be arrested faster than you could say ‘Allahu Akhbar’ and charged with incitement. British embassies around the world would be put to the torch and the usual bunch of beheading enthusiasts would be bouncing up and down in Trafalgar Square, demanding the death of all infidels. Yes, I know that the maniacs behind the ‘Christmas is Evil’ campaign are a tiny minority, etc. All the more reason, then, to come down on them like a ton of hot horse manure before they can spread their poison across the wider playing field. There are limits to turning the other cheek. What is equally worrying, though, is the official attitude to Christianity in Britain. While Islam and other religions enjoy protected species status, it’s open season on anyone who believes in Christ Our Saviour. Like many of you, I suspect, the only time I set foot in church is for christenings, weddings and funerals. The majority of us, though, retain a residue of our Christian upbringing — even if that involves little more than joining in with the carols from King’s College Chapel. As we are reminded at this time of year, Britain remains a country built on Judeo-Christian principles. Sadly, British common law and sense of fair play have been supplanted by politically-inspired ‘yuman rites’ legislation. You don’t have to be a fully paid-up God-botherer to be concerned about the use of the law to facilitate the aggressive, government-sponsored persecution of people who hold devout Christian beliefs. Those who preach tolerance loudest are the most intolerant. I think we can probably agree that, in the 21st Century, if you disapprove of homosexuals sleeping together, it’s probably best not to run a B&B. But that doesn’t justify spiteful gay bigots, backed by a registered charity, targeting a small seaside boarding-house in a sting operation, with the deliberate intention of dragging the owners before a court and putting them out of business. If we live in an age of equality, then a British Airways worker should be allowed to wear a modest crucifix — especially when half the staff at Heathrow seem to sport Muslim headscarfs. What harm is she doing to anyone? A devout Christian registrar who objects to conducting civil partnerships may be a bit of a throwback. But since she was in the job for years before the legislation was passed, surely a compromise could be reached to accommodate her beliefs. Why should her faith cost her career? The latest human sacrifice on the altar of diversity is a Christian NHS worker who faces the sack for giving a colleague a booklet about the potential dangers of abortion. She may be a nuisance, but a quiet word in her shell-like should suffice — not a full disciplinary hearing, followed by dismissal. Tolerance must be a two-way street, not an excuse for a modern-day witch-hunt by secular fundamentalists. This Christmas, let’s call an end to the war on Christianity. I’m not advocating turning the clock back to the 1950s, just pleading for a little goodwill all round. What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding? Merry Christmas. And in the words of the late Dave Allen: may your God go with you. link http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1341321/RICHARD-LITTLEJOHN-Happy-Christmas-war-Christians.html |
