"NEW YORK, December 21: The human rights group Stop Islamization of America (SIOA), a program of the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), announced "NEW YORK, December 21: The human rights group Stop Islamization of America (SIOA), a program of the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), announced today that......" Sounds better than 'far-right'. Could the EDL market itself as a 'human rights' group?: The right not to be blown to bits? The right to free speech? Freedom of association? The rights of Muslims in the UK not to be governed by Shariah councils? The rights of girls not to be circumcised? The rights of Muslim gays? http://www.jihadwatch.org/2010/12/sioa-rolling-out-pro-israel-bus-campaign-in-seattle-to-counter-jewish-blood-libel-bus-ads.html Edited by Battle of Lepanto, Dec 22 2010, 11:31 AM.

Definitely, human rights for children not to be abused, nor women nor animals in the name of religion. Part of that Human rights group has got to be education. Most people have no idea what Islam stands for, what jihad means, what goes on in a mosque, what sharia law means, what halal butchery entails. This group is already educating people (certainly has educated me) but needs to go wider in scale. |

Totally agree that the focus of EDL should be defending Human Rights. Let's claim the UN Declaration as totemic of secular western civilisation. Don't forget the influence Britain had back then. That document would never have seen the light of day in today's UN. |

It would be good to use the language of the moment - and turn the tables on everyone. Apart from anything else, the EDL as, in part, a human rights group is near the truth of it. Muslim countries don't sign up to the UN declaration of human rights - in fact, they have even drawn up their own - from which we, of course, need defending. The Islamic idea of of human rights for the kuffar don't made for very pretty reading. And if fcuking Amnesty International can dare to call themselves a human rights group whilst they defend the rights of those to deny them to others (cage Prisoners, Moazzim Begg, jihadis various) - then the EDL must surely be the genuine article. It might also a good thing to come across as being in favour of something (human rights) rather than defining the movement as being opposed to something (negative). Anyway, tough. I'm telling people the EDL is a human rights group from now on. Should provoke a healthy discussion. Edited by Battle of Lepanto, Dec 22 2010, 11:56 AM.

Because Pamela Gellar leads the American incarnation of this group, and she gets a great deal of mainstream exposure in US media (at least on Fox News channel, the most watched cable news show in the U.S.), and has often written about EDL and the work that they're doing. Strengthening those ties couldn't be a bad thing... |
