11/12/2010 17:36:53 Around 1,000 officers from 18 forces, including Cambridgeshire, have taken part in the policing of two protests in Peterborough today (Saturday December 11). The English Defence League (EDL) protest is now over and around 500 protesters have been escorted back along London Road back to their vehicles. 11 men have been arrested in total. Two men for possession of an offensive weapon, two men on suspicion of assault on police officers and two on suspicion of affray. A seventh man was arrested on breach of bail, but was later released. Five have been arrested at Peterborough railway station on suspicion of public order offences and are currently making their way into police custody. Latest arrest details include: * A 17-year-old from Grimsby and a 16-year-old from Cleethorpes were both arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. * A 24-year-old man from Peterborough and a 16-year-old from Wolverhampton were both arrested on suspicion of affray. * A 29-year-old man from Bedworth and a 22-year-old man from Farnham were both arrested on suspicion of assault on police officers. * It is not believed the five men arrested at the railway station are from the city. The Peterborough Trades Union Council (TUC) protest is now over and around 80 protesters have been escorted back to Bishop's Road. No arrests were made at the PTUC demonstration site. Superintendent Paul Fullwood said: "Peterborough stood firm and the city should be proud of the way it has responded to today's events. There were some issues of disorder dealt with promptly and professionally to achieve a peaceful outcome. "Some arrests have been made, but both protests have been generally peaceful. "Effective planning for the event has been positively implemented and we need to ensure Peterborough goes forward positively from this event. "Today's joint operation has enabled the community to go about business as usual. Some people chose to stay away, but we did all we could to make the city a safe place to be for the public, businesses and protestors." Peterborough City Council's chief executive Gillian Beasley thanked the people of Peterborough for showing the city's strength of community and carrying on their business as usual. She also praised the police operation for ensuring the protests passed peacefully. She said: "We have been working very closely with our communities, businesses, police and partner organisations over the past few weeks to allay any concerns and reassure the community. "Today we had 40 youth workers out in our neighbourhoods talking to our young people and we would like to thank our youth in the city for behaving so maturely and responsibly and not reacting to the protests. "I was very impressed with the police operation that enabled both protests to pass peacefully and business as usual to continue. "We had teams working with the police to ensure our temporary road closures were removed as soon as it was safe to do so to allow our city to return to normal. "Our call centre staff were able to reassure and provide information to 30 people who rang in on the day, and only 11 of those calls were directly related to the protests." Looking forward to the celebration events in the city centre tomorrow, Gillian added: "I would now encourage as many people as possible to show their support for Peterborough by coming into the city centre tomorrow to do their Christmas shopping, support local businesses and join in the 'One Voice, One Community' candlelit vigil on the Cathedral Green starting at 4.30pm." A programme of entertainment is being put together in the city centre for tomorrow (Sunday 12 December 2010) including two Dixie Jazz bands which will be playing in the Rivergate Shopping Centre and outside the Town Hall between 11am and 3pm. There will also be the opportunity for children to have their faces painted throughout the day and then representatives from across the city will come together on the Cathedral Green from 4.30pm to 5.15pm for the interfaith 'One Voice, One Community' candelit vigil. There will be songs, readings and a pledge of tolerance involving residents together with representatives from churches, mosques and other centres of worship, schools and community groups. http://www.cambs.police.uk/news/newsitem.asp?NewsID=5836 Edited by penningtonuk, Dec 11 2010, 11:35 PM.
